On The Go Baby Changing Pad Skill Level: Beginner Designed By Marni Weaver Sewn By Marni Weaver www.haberdasheryfun.com Do you know a new mom or do you have a new baby in the house? Use this easy step by step tutorial to create a one of a kind, on the go, baby changing pad. The pad is soft and perfect for babies to lie on. It rolls up for easy storage and transportion. Changing pad can be made with PUL fabric or with cotton fabric backed with Vinyl Fuse. Fabrics Needed Outside fabric PUL fabric (polyurethane laminate) OR Coordinating cotton fabric Contrast binding and strap fabric Materials Needed Pellon TP970 Thermolam Plus Sew-In Pellon 100 Vinyl Fuse (if coordinating cotton fabric used) Velcro Thread 1 piece Tools Needed Sewing machine and related supplies Rotary cutter and related supplies. Disappearing ink pen

Cut Binding and Strap Instructions Step 1. Place the fabric flat on the cutting mat. The selvages should be on the right and left hand sides. Fold in half wrong sides together, so the selvages are now on top of each other. Line up the selvages. Hand press wrinkles out. Step 2. Fold again, so there is a fold of fabric on top of the selvages. There will be four layers of fabric. Hand press wrinkles out. Step 3. Line a ruler up across the fabric. The grid lines should match up with the selvages and folds. Using a rotary cutter, cut off a small strip, roughly a 1/2 and discard. This is an important step as this makes the bottom edge straight. Step 4. For the binding, move the ruler up and cut one 2-1/2 strip. Repeat two more times. At least 90 of binding is needed. Step 5. For the strap, cut one 3-3/4 strip. Cut Other Fabric Step 6. Cut one 26-1/2 x 15-1/2 rectangle each from the outer fabric, the Thermolam Plus, and the PUL fabric. Step 7. Place a round object such as a plate, saucer, or cup over one corner. Step 8. Trace the curve with a disappearing ink pen. Cut along the traced line. Repeat for all corners of all three rectangles. On the Go Baby Changing Pad Page 3

Make Binding Strips Step 9. Trim all strip ends straight. Step 10. Place two 2-1/2 fabric strips right sides together and at a 90 angle. Place a ruler at a diagonal and mark a line with a disappearing ink pen. Pin to hold. Stitch following the inked line. Repeat to sew all 2-1/2 fabric strips together. Step 11. Trim seam allowances to 1/4. On the Go Baby Changing Pad Page 4

Make Binding Strips Step 12. Press seams open. Step 13. Fold the fabric strips in half lengthwise with wrong sides facing. Press with iron. Sew Strap Step 14. Fold the 3-3/4 fabric strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides facing. Press with iron. Step 15. Turn and fold top and bottom edge in 1/4. Press with iron. On the Go Baby Changing Pad Page 5

Step 16. Fold in half again. Press this fold. Step 17. Edgestitch both sides. To finish strap end, double fold the end 1/4. Press with iron. Topstitch. Sew Pad - All Pieces Together Step 18. Sandwich the Thermolam Plus between the outer fabric and the PUL fabric with the PUL fabric on the bottom. The wrong side of the fabrics should be facing. Step 19. Gently smooth out all the wrinkles and pin at the edges. On the Go Baby Changing Pad Page 6

Step 20. Place pad lengthwise. Using a tape measure, measure down 4 from the top right corner of the pad. Mark with the disappearing ink pen. Step 21. Pin strap in place. Step 22. Leaving a 2 tail, pin the binding to the raw edge. Raw edge of the binding should be aligned with the raw edges of the fabric. Pin along the first edge to hold the binding in place. Step 23. Stitch the binding in place using a 1/4 seam allowance. The binding should be sewn on top of the strap piece that was pinned in Step 21. On the Go Baby Changing Pad Page 7

Step 24. Finish sewing binding around the pad and leave another 2 tail at the end. Backstitch to hold in place. Leave a 2 gap in the binding. Step 25. First tail - Turn and fold the binding in by 1/2 and tuck under itself. Second tail - Place second tail into the first tail. Adjust so that the binding is snug inside. Press with an iron and pin in place. Stitch with a 1/4 seam allowance. Step 26. Press seams while closed. On the Go Baby Changing Pad Page 8

Step 27. Open the binding seam and press again. Step 28. Turn the binding towards the PUL side of the mat. Press. Pin if necessary. Step 29. Edgestitch the binding. This edgestitch will show through to the front side of the mat. Sew Velcro Step 30. Fold pad lengthwise. On the Go Baby Changing Pad Page 9

Step 31. Roll pad up, leaving a small tail. Pin the Velcro piece to the end. Flip tail onto the pad and find the second Velcro placement. Pin down. Topstitch each Velcro piece. On the Go Baby Changing Pad Page 10
