Manhattan Beach Rotary Club Serving Manhattan Beach Since 1950 Club No. 751 District 5280 Chartered August 9, 1950 www.mbrotary.org Bossa Nova It was Monday, September 14, 2015, and by the time I arrived President Richard Ham had yielded the floor to Bossa Nova artist Marisol Saens, whose guitar and voice entertained us with vocal accompaniment by Joel Ruben, previewing a fundraiser at Sheryl and Dan Jensen s home in support of the Ethical Actions Scholarship at El Camino College..Our special guests included the bouncy 5-year-old son of Russ Samuels, Quinten Samuels, and our exchange student hosted by Les Silverman, Maja Luttel. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm. Ralph Waldo Emerson TODAY S PROGRAM Sept 21 Olympics in LA? Zev Yaroslavky, former LA County Supervisor, will discuss this decision as well as his experience being an election observer in Nigeria.

Service Activities Jordan Holbert is seeking Magic In Giving volunteers, looking for the stability of a two-year commitment..deb Robertson is seeking Richstone sign-ups and volunteers for the October 16 Lennox Career Day..Dan Saks is about to close dine-around signups..ed Kushins is repeating the Venice Walking Tour on September 26..Chris Ullman is organizing pulled pork for the Hometown Fair..Westchester Rotarian and District 5280 Vision to Learn Chair Nora MacLellan enjoined us to help screen 5600 Hawthorne elementary school students, anticipating 800 eye exams and 650 glasses. We presented her with our check in support of the program. The Waterfront Les Silverman shared a few highlights of the importance of this, the first day of Rosh Hashanah, and then introduced our speaker, Fred Bruning, CEO of El Segundo s CenterCal Properties, which is developing The Waterfront project in Redondo Beach. From Portofino Way to Torrance Boulevard, the whole shoreline is being revamped, with only Kincaid s remaining intact. Seaside Lagoon is a major water pollutant and will be recreated as a clean water playground. The new Public Market will emulate Pike s Place or the Ferry Building. There will be office space, connecting paths, even a bridge among a maze of paseos and parks. There will be a theater and restaurants and a boutique hotel. It will be a 100% Living Streets certified project favoring bicycles and pedestrians. 90% of it is privately funded. Check out www.centercal.com.

Happy Dollars Nelson Gray visited Madelyn and Wendell Harter and reminded us that visitors are welcome..lisa Hemmat s Lido is featuring Tom Stolpman s winery..mark Burton thanked Mike Doell for bringing in Lt. General Robert Ord as the City s Veterans Day speaker in November. Shannon Ryan thanked Rich Ham for his Rotary boat ride..wade Austin is enjoying his third grandchild..russ Samuels asks us to get any audio-visual materials to him by the Thursday before each Monday meeting if possible. Unplugged I lingered after the meeting and ended up being one of the last to leave but not the last. Last was Russ Samuels, audio-visual successor to Norm Levin, still tearing down the fairly complicated meeting set-up, ably assisted by his son Quinten, who took particular delight in unplugging things. I thought, yep, that s how future Rotarians get indoctrinated. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett
