Summary Information Repository: Creator: Bardeen, C. W. (Charles William), 1847-1924 Title: ID: D.159 Date [inclusive]: 1883-1896 Physical Description: Language of the Material: Preferred Citation Charles William Bardeen scrapbooks 4 scrapbooks English (Name of item, if applicable), Charles William Bardeen Scrapbooks, 1883-1896. Dept. of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation, River Campus Libraries, University of Rochester. Biographical/Historical note Charles William Bardeen (1847-1924) was born in Groton, Massachusetts. After fighting in the Civil War, Bardeen worked his way through Yale, graduating in 1869. He found employment as a viceprincipal and teacher after graduation, and held various positions as school principal, superintendent, and college English professor until 1873. At that time Bardeen took over the New York state agency for Clark and Maynard's educational publications, whose headquarters were located in Syracuse, New York. Bardeen became managing editor of the School Bulletin in 1874 and retained that position for almost half a century. - Page 3-

Scope and Contents note In the 1880s and 1890s, Bardeen made a number of trips to Europe and northern Africa, and he wrote up his travel adventures for the Bulletin. He then collected the Bulletin articles and interleaved them with other memorabilia from his journeys in a number of scrapbooks. Four of these scrapbooks comprise this collection. Included in the scrapbooks are personal and business correspondence, newspaper and magazine articles, travel diary entries, cartes de visite, bills and receipts for goods purchased abroad, playbills, opera and concert programs, maps, and a number of early Kodak camera prints. The first scrapbook, covering October 1883-March 1884, traces Bardeen's journey on the steamer Circassia from New York to Scotland. He then continued his trip through Scotland, England, and France, spending much of his time at the theatre. The second scrapbook, covering September - November 1885, follows Bardeen through his crossing to Antwerp, Belgium, on the Westmoreland. In Antwerp, Bardeen visited the 1885 World's Fair. He then continued his trip through Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. The third scrapbook, a record of Bardeen's eighth trip abroad in January and February of 1893, charts his voyage on the North German Lloyd steamer Ems to Egypt. In addition, he also spent some time in Naples, Italy and returned to France. In this third scrapbook many early Kodak prints of Bardeen's travelling companions and of the cities he visited appear. The fourth scrapbook, labeled as Bardeen's ninth trip abroad from September 1895 until January 1896, traces his crossing on the ship La Gascogne to Tunis and Algiers. Bardeen then returned to France again and left for New York on the steamer Champagne. On December 13, 1895, while heading for port in New York, the Champagne was struck by a tidal wave. Bardeen's account of the incident appears in this scrapbook. In addition, near the end of the book are a number of newspaper articles and letters recounting the debutante ball of the season and the wedding of Julia Scott, vice-president Adlai Stevenson's niece and a friend of Bardeen's, to Carl Vrooman.
