RUN Short film
RUN Intense drama about moral choices. All in #screenlife.
Logline Lisa, a cryonics company employee, whose responsibility is to ensure that right after client is dead he or she is about to be quickly transported to the clinic, sets contact to the client s killer. Genre This is screenlife meets road movie. What? Yes! There is much more to the language than horrors (even those made beautifully).
What is cryonics? Preserving people using low temperatures with the hope that future science will be able to restore them to the full health. If right after a man dies he undergoes the procedure there is a chance someday he (or at least his consciousness) will be resurrected.
A man dies. What next? Best case scenario is a clinic with a proper equipment is not far away. Or some place where 0 С temperature may be achieved. And there is nothing criminal about the death. But what if a man dies on the empty road? What if everything is far away? What if the only person who can help transport the body before it s too late is alleged killer? Should police handle this (meaning body will not be saved) or even a slight hope of a future resurrection is more important than punishment? There are several moral choices to be made in a very short period of time and that is what makes this story interesting.
How is that screenlife? If a client wishes he can wear a tiny camera+speaker device so that if he dies a company s employee will be able to see what the camera sees and speak to whoever is near the body. All is to ensure the body will be saved. That means employee s desktop screen is where everything happens. Indeed, that employee (Lisa) will not only be using this Skype-like app but also write emails, chat with her colleague and browse through Facebook as she makes her decisions.
Synopsis Lisa (23) is a cryonics company employee, whose responsibility is to ensure that right after client is dead he or she is about to be quickly transported to the clinic. When Tom (70) dies somewhere on the empty road, his camera+speaker device starts working and Lisa (through video streaming app) sees a man (Jacob, 25) going through his pockets. Even though all indicates there was a crime and police should handle this Lisa decides saving Tom s body is top priority so she convinces Jacob to transport the body to the nearest clinic as the road is far away. During the road they get to know about each other and make some choices so when the destination is almost there it s time for both of them to answer some questions. Should I trust her that there is no police? If there is, should I risk my freedom saving the body or just ran away? And for Lisa, should I call the police knowing that he has committed crime? If there is police, should I warn him?
Financing This is really low-budget film. It is just one actor on screen (Jacob) and 2 voices (Lisa and police officer). There is a road, a car Jacob drives and an Ambulance car at the distance and that s about it. And Lisa s Mac.
Location Aside from the screenlife language, this is essentially a road movie. Thus everything happens on the road, which is empty, mostly straight and very distant from any cities.
Characters Jacob (25) The only person whose face (not photo) is seen. He is young, slim, hostile looking but not evil. Looks like a good guy in a bad situation. He is one helping deliver client s body to the clinic. Lisa (23) We don t know how she looks. We only know about her through her actions on the screen. Her voice is young, gentle yet pretty low. She works in a cryonics company but is new to it.
Why this story It is not a story about what is on the surface when talking about screenlife. For me it was imperative not to talk about social media impact, hacking and online maniacs. It is quite evident screenlife is good at it. I wanted to go to the unknown territory for the language.
