Morning Glory Podcast Transcript Morning Glory: Hi, how are you? YG: Good, very good. Very happy. MG: That s good. After your movie s premiere last Friday, have you gotten any feedback? YG: I ve gotten very good feedback, to be honest. Working on a film like this was a privilege; this chess game Antonio Hernandez created was wonderful. He let us play our characters in a very independent way, he gave us our freedom which actually helped. It was a very different, and it helped me rediscover my profession, you know? MG: That must have been great then, right? YG: Yeah, yeah. You need to watch it because it s a fantastic movie and it s getting good reviews. But please, you have to watch the original version. I have nothing against movie dubbers, but this is a movie that needs to be seen in its original language like all the 1

2 movies, to be honest. Otherwise you miss part of the actors performance, you know, if you can t hear their real voices. Besides, half of this movie is in English and the other half in Spanish, so there are not so many subtitles to read [laughs] MG: So we won t get tired of reading, huh? [laughs] Anyways, listen Yon. Both you and your brother Aitor play the bad guys in this movie, and I think you were actually looking forward to getting a part like this one, am I right? YG: Yes, absolutely. I appreciated it because it was different from anything I d done before. I usually try to pick characters that have nothing to do with each other but that's not always possible in this profession. So far, I ve played the ethical guy, with morals, so getting the chance to play this character with a dark side and a mysterious background was really, really great for me. I keep telling Antonio [silly voice] write another one, write another one, please! MG: [laughs] Hopefully he ll let you work with all that freedom again. Because, what was that like? What kind of freedom? Was it limitless? Did Antonio simply tell you to write your own character? YG: [laughs] No, no. It was actually the other way round. The script was rehearsed a thousand times, and Antonio had made everything clear. We planned every sentence, the exact intention So he created the path we had to follow but we were allowed to trot around. It was very different from anything else I've done. No offense to my other projects, I learned a lot from them, but this was just completely different. MG: Working with Antonio was nice because you have known him for a while. So what was it like to work with your brother, who you ve known since you were born? YG: They keep asking us this question and they keep waiting for us to say something negative [laughs]. MG: I actually want you to say it was wonderful! YG: Well, it was. It was a gift. My brother and I have this complicity, we can tell each other everything with just one look, you know, so it was incredibly easy. Apart from that, my cousin Manu also worked in the movie helping the director, and I knew 2

3 some of the crew as well, so I was basically working with family. I was very comfortable. MG: And also, the entire movie was practically filmed inside a room, inside the four walls of a room. YG: Yes, it was quite theatrical, and different because we shot a very long take that lasted twenty-four minutes from action to cut. So I was able to work freely for twenty-four long minutes, which I had never done before... and it was amazing. MG: Antonio made this movie to warn us about the dangers of new technologies, to show us how dependent we are on them now, how they control us, how we can be watched or recorded at any time. I was wondering if you are a cautious guy and cover your webcam with a piece of paper, just in case? YG: Absolutely. Yes. You can t trust it. I know people who can just approach a stranger s laptop and access his camera, so if, after that, they leave their laptop on, they can be watched. MG: Your I know people sounds to me like you re the one who likes to watch people [laughs] YG: Yeah I watch my neighbors, [laughs]. MG: Us human beings are very curious by nature, so I think we have all spied our neighbors at least once. YG: Well, maybe when they re making too much noise I get all curious, [laughs]. No, but I m very bad with technology, and with a lot of other things [laughs], so I don t have any social networks since you never really know who is on the other side. People always try to be clever and come up with original sentences; they create a positive avatar. But what about the reality of what we really are? MG: Well, you can also find bad reviews and negative critics out there, but you mean the personal side is always good. YG: Exactly, it s always too good, starting with your own profile picture that you upload after taking a hundred and going through a selection process. 3

4 MG: That s true. It is said that no one is ever as ugly as they look in their ID photo or as pretty as they are in their Facebook profile picture. YG: So true, [laughs]. That s why I would like to say to everyone listening that you should watch El Gran Marciano, directed by Antonio Hernandez, because you can see people s miseries, you know, the bad side we never talk about. They used forty-three hidden cameras that recorded everything for three days. It s a wonderful project, you should watch it. MG: Noted, thank you. So Yon, I m curious because all the projects you ve been a part of you got them by pure chance, because you were going to be a mechanic or teach karate, right? YG: Yes, I started practicing karate when I was 5 years old and had to quit when I moved to Madrid when I was almost 20. And I used to love it mechanics and wanted to study it, but life gave me this job opportunity and I took it. It was when I started El Internado that I realized that I wanted to keep doing this. At first I suffered a lot, because it s a very complex job, even though people don't believe it. They used to approach me like nice, huh? Working on tv, earning loads of money doing nothing! MG: Oh no. I can imagine your mental reaction like shut the fuck up, I wake up at six every morning to start shooting! YG: Exactly. But that s what they think, and they are so wrong. MG: At least it s all worked out for you. We ve seen you a lot on TV. YG: Yeah, luckily. I m one of the few privileged people in the industry that can actually choose what project to do next. So I m very grateful. MG: To finish with, any upcoming projects? YG: I start shooting the second season of Bajo Sospecha in September, so I guess it will air by the beginning of next year. And a movie in English for next year, too. This one is going to be a challenge for me since I don t speak English at all [laughs]. 4

MG: Well, we will definitely be going to the cinema to watch your new film, by Antonio Hernandez, and we promise we ll watch the original version as you recommended.
