Each year the Guild furthers its educational goal by the granting of one or more scholarships in the amount of $1,500 in memory of Jeanne Gill and Carol Phillips to a graduating high school student or a current college student who is pursuing study in textile arts, design or other art-related fields. This year we were able to grant one scholarship and are pleased to announce Garrett Cebollero of Nevada Union High School as the winner for 2018. Garrett hopes to attend California Institute of the Arts with a major of Theater Design or Architectural Design. Garrett has had extensive experience in the Nevada Union Theater Department performing the duties of light technician, set builder, and sound technician. He recently held the position of head tech (set, sound and lighting designer) for NU s production of Almost Maine. In addition to the theater work, Garrett works part time in Ben Franklin s yarn department and has designed various works of wearable art. He may be a familiar face to many Guild members. Despite both of these activities, Garrett has maintained an excellent grade point average and received glowing recommendations. Garrett has been invited to display some of his work at the Quilt Show in May and to attend our June PTGQ meeting. The Pine Tree Quilt Guild is thrilled to support such a promising student in the pursuit of his dreams. QUILT SHOW NEWS America the Beautiful As of April 14, we have 219 quilts entered in our show of which 88 are to be judged. Quilt judging will take place on Thursday, May 3 at the LDS Church in Nevada City from 9 am to 4 pm. It is an excellent opportunity for you to listen to the judges comments and learn from their input even if you are not having a quilt judged. There is still time to volunteer to help at the show. If you are interested, please contact Frances O Brien at 273-1972. The Quilt Show board had our last meeting on Thursday, April 12 which is a little over 3 weeks before the show. Everyone is working very hard on making this another outstanding show! Thanks for all your hard work! Barbara Ceresa, Quilt Show Chair

The Pine Needle Press Page 2 May 2018 President s Message Hello Everyone, The weather this spring has certainly been volatile. I m happy that we ve gotten rain to carry us into the dry months, though. And I love seeing all the different shades of green and all of the spring blossoms. Visions of new quilt ideas are going through my mind. Speaking of quilts, our Quit Show is almost here. I m looking forward to seeing all of the fabulous quilts. I m always in awe as I walk through the show. We have the BEST show of any I ve seen. We still have a few volunteer spots that need to be filled for the show. Signup sheets will be at the meeting. Thanks to all of the hard work already that has gone into the planning for the show. We re in need for both a Quilt Show Chair and a Quilt Show Co-chair for next year. Its also time to start working on the 2020 Opportunity Quilt. Mini-groups, this is a great group project! If you are interested in volunteering or have questions/comments, please contact me. The Pine Needle Press Page 3 COMMUNITY SERVICE THANK YOU to NANCYAN Tracy who, again this year, donated pillows to the graduating Foster Youth and to all who picked up and/or returned kits and quilts in April. As you read this Newsletter, the 2018 Quilt Show will soon be a memory, so it s time to get back to regular business and everyday life. CS reaches out to you Community Service relies on your support to fulfill the Guild s mission supporting our neighbors in a time of need. The recipients are grateful for your generosity. The local agencies currently supported are: CHILDREN and FAMILIES served by CASA, CPS, and Domestic Violence. JUVENILE to TWIN size are needed. FIRE LOSS community members who have lost their homes to fire or other causes. We need every size baby to queen/king for families. Graduating FOSTER YOUTH We met the 2018 goal and these will be distributed in May. Each year we provide 10 TWIN size to help these students make their way as they graduate high school and leave the foster care system. HOME BOUND SENIORS Nevada County Adult Protective Services works to keep seniors at home and out of convalescent care. We try to give 10 LAP quilts each month. HOSPITALITY HOUSE clients are enrolled in training programs and moving out into their own housing. We try to give 10 TWIN quilts each month. PLEASE NOTIFY US IF YOU KNOW OF ANYONE WE CAN SUPPORT! We have kits available or you may select fabrics from our stash that interest you; use your favorite pattern or select from our collection. Quilts are also ready for quilting and binding. Quilting a CS quilt is a great opportunity to hone your machine quilting skills and need not be fancy stitch in the ditch, meander, or sew wavy lines top to bottom, side to side, corner to corner. Help is always needed to sort donations, make kits, prepare quilt tops and sandwiches, attach labels, sew up backs, and prepare quilts for the agencies to pick up. Anyone can participate members and non-members bring a friend! Come for an hour, half day, or all day. We meet 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m., third Thursday of each month. Want to help but cannot attend CS Thursday or a Guild meeting? Contact Nancy or me for other arrangements. WE ARE LOCATED at The Nevada County Historical Society building, directly across from the CDF/Cal-Fire Department and next to Sierra Presbyterian Church. Take the Gold Flat exit, and go towards Ridge Road. At the stop sign, turn left. At the next stop sign, turn left again into the parking lot, then go to the back of the building. ALTERNATE DIRECTIONS, avoiding the crazy intersection. Exit the freeway at Brunswick and turn as if going to the Fowler Center/B&C/SaveMart. Stay on East Main Street (Old Nevada City Highway) through the stoplight, through the first stop sign. At the second stop sign (almost at the crazy intersection), turn right into the parking lot, go to the back of the building! 2018 CS DAYS 9:00 3:00 May 17 June 21 July 19 August 16 September 20 October 18 November 15 December: NO CS

These mini groups are where friendships really develop. All members interested in learning more about mini groups, joining an existing or forming a new mini group are invited to a brunch meeting on May 9 to explore the possibilities!!! Date: May 9, 2018 Time: 10 noon Where: Anne Wilson s home, 10381 S. Ponderosa Way, Rough and Ready RSVP by May 7 to Anne Wilson 530 274 1290 or annewquilts@gmail.com Additional Information: call or email Anne Announcement: WE CARE (making quilts for children who have lost their homes due to wildfires) is having a Sew-a-Thon Reunion on Monday, May 21 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Osborne Way in Grass Valley. There will be kits to sew or take home. Or...just stop by and visit. We will be there from 9:30-3:30. Bring a lunch and join us for a 12:00 break to catch up with old friends. For more information contact Kathy Biggi KABRabit@yahoo.com. Eleanor Sagely It is with regret that the guild has learned of member Eleanor Sagely s passing. Eleanor was an active Pine Tree Quilt Guild member who enriched the lives of her friends and fellow quilters. Her giving nature and friendly smile will be missed by all. The following information is from Eleanor s daughter, Kathy Goodwin. Ellie's family would be honored to be introduced to her fellow Quilters who meant so much to her during her life in Grass Valley. Please come and join us in her Celebration of Life, on May 20th for music, food, and stories. We will come together at the Sierra Pines Mobile Home Park s recreation hall, at 62 Primrose Lane, Grass Valley. Thank you, Kathy Goodwin, daughter, phone# (949) 606 5244.

The Pine Needle Press Page 5 DOG BEDS Sammy's Friends has a need for dog beds. If you sew some home dec or other heavy duty fabric into a 23" x 35" (size that fits into their 30 kennels) leaving an opening for stuffing. Keep this near your sewing machine and fill it with any sewing related leftovers, including thread, batting, stablilizers or left over fabric. When full, hand sew the opening closed. You can deliver the finished beds to them directly. Even though there was an article in the paper recently stating they have lost funding, they are hoping to remain open in some capacity and will still have a need for the dog beds. Any questions, please contact me or Sammy's. Thanks, Diane Klose HOME WORKSHOP The Home Workshop is a time for quilters to gather and enjoy each others' company. Most months, one of our own presents a class. The teacher volunteers her expertise and time. The students provide their own materials, machine, and tools. The guild provides cutting mats, ironing stations, and extension cord. It's a winwin situation and offers time for friends, both old and new, to meet for great fellowship. It s May and time for some more fun with old and new friends. This month you will have the opportunity to create a pillow with a handle to ease the discomfort of sitting on hard chairs. The cover is done in the style of an envelope. If you don t need a cushion, bring your own project and join us for sewing in community. We meet at the LDS Church on Hollow Way, which parallels the freeway, in Nevada City, just past the cemetery. The doors open at 9 and class begins promptly at 9:30. We break for lunch, so bring a lunch or buy one at the gas station on Hollow Way. Bring your own drinks, but please do not bring tea or coffee, although herbal brews, water, and non-caffeinated sodas are welcome. Do you have a project you d like to share in future months? We re looking for volunteer teachers for the upcoming year 2019. Think about it and if you are interested, talk with Theresa or Bonnie. If you have questions, please call Theresa Finn at 530 521 7444.
