M.70 Coimisiún na Scrúduithe Stáit State Examinations Commission LEAVING CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION, 2010 ART History and Appreciation of Art Ordinary Level 150 marks are assigned to this paper, i.e. 37.5% of the total marks for Art Thursday, June 17 Afternoon, 2.00 4.30 Instructions Answer three questions as follows: one question from Section I (Art in Ireland), one question from Section II (European Art 1000AD - Present), and one question from Section III (Appreciation of Art). All questions carry equal marks (50). Sketches and diagrams should be used where appropriate to illustrate the points you make. Refer where necessary to the illustrations on the accompanying sheet. SECTION I - Irish Art 1. The Gleninsheen gorget, illustrated on the accompanying sheet, is an example of Irish pre- Christian metalwork. (a) What was its function? (b) Describe how it was made and decorated. (c) Name and sketch one other piece of pre-christian metalwork that you have studied. 2. The Cross of Moone, Co. Kildare is illustrated on the accompanying sheet. (a) What was its function? (b) Describe its structure and decoration. (c) Name and sketch one other High Cross that you have studied. 3. The metalwork piece illustrated on the accompanying sheet is one of Ireland s most impressive treasures. (a) Name this piece of metalwork. (b) Describe its decoration. (c) Describe how it was made. 4. The architect James Gandon (1743 - c.1823) was responsible for some of Ireland s most important Georgian buildings. (a) Name and describe one building designed by Gandon. (b) Sketch one of its typical Georgian features. (c) Name and write a short description of one other Georgian building you have studied. 5. The Meeting on the Turret Stairs by Frederick Burton (1816-1900) is illustrated on the accompanying sheet. (a) Describe this painting using the following headings: painting technique use of colour. Packaging and presentation play an important part in the sale of cosmetic and perfume products. (a) Describe and discuss the characteristics of a well-designed perfume bottle or container. Use the following headings: shape novelty/originality style. (b) Suggest reasons why the best designed bottles might become collectors items in the future? 18. Promotional brochures are an important part of the tourist industry and are aimed at attracting visitors to Ireland. (a) Name two areas of interest in your locality that could be included in a tourist brochure. (b) Describe and discuss why the named areas of interest could attract visitors.. 19. Sports stadiums such as Croke Park, Thomond Park and the Aviva Stadium at Lansdowne Road are stunning examples of modern Irish architecture. (a) What benefits and disadvantages do stadium developments like these bring to a locality? Use the following headings to help you with your answer: concerts/conferences road network visual aspects landscaping in the surrounding areas.
