Blocks Appliqué Blocks Use your favorite appliqué technique or one described below to make the following blocks. Hand Appliqué Trace around the appliqué templates onto the wrong side of the fabrics. Cut 1/4 from the shapes to add a seam allowance. Lightly starch or size the fabric shapes. Place the mylar template in the center of the shape and use as a guide to press the seam allowances to the wrong side. Clip the seam allowance around curves where necessary to get a smooth edge. Let cool and remove template. Using the block diagrams as a guide, position each appliqué shape on top of a background square, right sides up and pin in place. Hand stitch around the outside edge of the appliqué shapes, bringing the needle from the back of the block through the fold and then under the shape through to the back of the block. Machine Appliqué Trace around the appliqué templates onto the paper side of the fusible web and cut out 1/4 on the outside of the drawn lines. Follow the manufacturer s instructions to fuse the drawn shapes to the wrong side of the fabrics and then cut along the drawn lines. Using the block diagrams as a guide, position each appliqué shape on top of a background square, right sides up. Remove the fusible web paper backing and fuse the appliqué shapes in place. Stitch around the outside edge of the appliqué shapes using a small zigzag, satin or buttonhole stitch. Stems Fold the cut fabric strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Sew a 1/4 seam along the matching raw edges. Press the seam allowances open, centering the seam along the back of the strip. Trim the seam allowances close to the seam so they cannot be seen from the front of the strip. When appliquéing the stems place seam side down onto the block. Felted Wool Use the felted wool squares to personalize you quilt. Select block elements that may be harder to hand appliqué and substitute the fabric with the felted wool. Trace around the appliqué templates on the right side of the felted wool. Cut along the drawn lines. Using the block diagrams as a guide, position each appliqué shape on top of a background square, right sides up and pin in place. Stitch around the outside edge of the appliqué shape by machine or hand using a straight or buttonhole stitch. Friendship Quilt Amanda Herring Designs 2
