WOOD SPECIES AVAILABLE Choose the wood species or material that works best for your new doors! Whether you re looking to add elegant style, a rustic appearance, or a traditional painted look with your new doors, the species or material you choose can make a big impact in creating the style you love! If you need help choosing, read through the descriptions of each wood species and material below. Once you ve narrowed down your options, look through the following pages to see the doors styles offered in each species or material and create YOUR DOOR, YOUR WAY. CHERRY Cherry is a medium hardwood best known for its luxurious look, smooth grain and exceptional color often including light pink, cinnamon, and dark reddish brown together. Cherry wood will start off much lighter and will slowly deepen in color as it ages. This darkening of pigment is enhanced by exposure to bright light and will darken several shades over time. Cherry wood accepts a variety of stains very well. KNOTTY ALDER Knotty Alder is a medium density hardwood with a fine grain pattern and a rustic look. When first cut, Knotty Alder s color can range from tan with tints of peach or red and darkens over time to light brown with darker accents. Rustic knots are the often the most desirable characteristic of the door, showing the beauty of the wood and adding character to any room. Knotty Alder Doors have dark filled knots, making the rustic characteristics of the door even stronger. KNOTTY PINE Knotty Pine is distinctly characteristic filled softwood, known for it s rich and random display of knots showing the beauty of the natural wood. With a distinct grain pattern and pale honey and straw toned color, the darker red and brown tinted knots stand out and provide a rustic charm to the Knotty Pine wood. Though Pine accepts stain well, it is also one of the most difficult wood species to evenly stain. MAPLE Maple is a dense hardwood with a straight, and sometimes slightly wavy grain. Popular for its light cream color with subtle hints of reddish brown and yellow, Maple has a uniform appearance that produces a smooth, clean look when painted or stained. Though Maple wood accepts stain well, it is also known as one of the more difficult wood species to evenly stain. OAK Oak is a heavy hardwood. Featuring a dramatic grain that varies from straight to a distinguishing arch pattern, Oak is known as a timeless wood species, blending with a wide range of design styles. Accepting a broad range of stains and finishes also adds to the appeal of Oak. PINE Pine is an abundant and fast growing softwood with a distinctive grain and honey-toned or straw-like color. Pine is very lightweight, durable, and inexpensive wood, making for a popular choice in home design. Though Pine accepts stain well, it is also one of the most difficult wood species to evenly stain. 18 POPLAR Poplar is a medium density hardwood known for its fine, straight grain and even texture. With a slight variation in color, from light brown, pale yellow, and sometimes hints of green, Poplar accepts all stain colors well. With a wide variety of stain options available, Poplar is often used as an inexpensive option to mimic a more expensive or refined wood species, such as Cherry.

PRIMED SMOOTH Primed smooth doors provide a smooth and consistent surface to paint on. With an already primed surface and even texture the final product will result in a smooth and clean painted surface, making a great addition to any room. PRIMED WOODGRAIN Primed woodgrain doors provide an elegant wood grain texture that is primed and ready to paint to match your home. The distinct wood grain is subtle enough to feature a clean and consistent paint color, but distinct enough to add defined texture and characteristics up close. WHEAT OAK FINISH MATERIALS AVAILABLE Wheat Oak finish doors provide the pattern and color of a dramatic Oak grain finished in a rich wheat color, with a smooth even texture. As a manufactured material, you are guaranteed to have consistent grain and color throughout the entire door. Primed 1-Lite Satin Glass Door Shown Painted White 19

FINISHING TIPS FINISHING AN INTERIOR DOOR All interior doors will need to be finished with the use of oil-based stains and topcoats. When painting, an oil-based primer is required. Once the oil-based primer has properly dried, latex or water based paint can be applied. All 6 sides of the door, including the frame, will need a sealer, to help maintain your door for a lifetime. NOTE: Water-based stain, polyurethane or conditioners are not recommended. Only oil-based stains, polyurethane or conditioners should be used. HOW TO STAIN YOUR INTERIOR DOOR 1. Lightly sand all surfaces of your door unit using a fine grit sand-paper. For finishing, #220 is recommended. NOTE: While sanding, try to sand with the grain of the door. Cross sanding may show up as lines in the staining process of the door. 2. Look for any dried glue or putty especially in the joint areas, if it is not removed by sanding, it will affect the finished result. 3. Apply a first coat of oil-based stain, polyurethane, conditioners or primer (oil-based is required) to all six sides of the door and jamb. 4. Remove any excess stain from the door s surface using a clean rag. 5. When first coat is dry, lightly sand and then clean the surface. Once the oil-based primer has properly dried, a latex or water based paint can be applied. Apply at least one finish coat. Allow ample drying time between coats. Make sure to brush in the direction of the woodgrain to ensure that there will not be any cross grain strokes when you are finished. HOW TO PAINT YOUR INTERIOR DOOR 1. Lightly sand the white wrapped interior jamb and door with 120 grit sandpaper NOTE: Failure to perform this step will result in adhesion failure in the paint. 2. Remove all dust particles from the jamb and door. 3. Open the door being careful not to damage the jamb. For ease of painting, removing the hinges from the jamb is recommended. However, if you choose to paint the door with the jamb attached, the hinges must be taped before painting. 4. Apply a coat of high quality latex paint to all 6 sides of the door using a sprayer or brush. Multiple coats may be needed to acquire desired finish. MAINTENANCE Check your door and frame periodically to verify that no chips, scratches or peeling have occurred on your door. Make sure to fix any issues with the finish that arise and recoat with a high quality polyurethane sealer or paint. Verify that your handle and hinges are in good working order. Tighten handle if needed, as a loose handle can mar wood around the bore. Lubricate hinges if needed as well. 34 Learn more at: www.midwestmanufacturing.com
