1. General Description of the Paint Roller The Canadian Tire Paint Roller is a painting tool used to quickly and effectively apply paint to large flat surfaces. It absorbs and applies paint evenly and efficiently by rolling along the surface. The paint roller has a much greater surface area to absorb paint than a paint brush. Using a cylindrical shape, it optimizes surface area to absorb and carry paint. The paint roller smoothly covers large rooms or spaces in a short amount of time. The Canadian Tire Paint Roller has a body attached to a roller. The body provides a handle for the user and also acts as an axis for the roller (see Figure 1). The centred position of the handle allows painters to apply even pressure along the disposable roller sleeve, producing an even tone across the surface. Because of this easy use, it is widely used by both professional painters and amateurs. Maintenance of the Canadian Tire Paint Roller is simple. The materials that make up the paint roller are completely washable. The wire and the rolling frame are made of stainless steel, while the end caps for the rolling frame and the handle are made of plastic. Paint is easily washed off these materials by soaking and scrubbing them in warm water. 25 cm Roller 32 cm Body Figure 1 Parts of the Canadian Tire Paint Roller 3

2. Part-By-Part Description of the Paint Roller The Canadian Tire Paint Roller has two main components: (1) the body and (2) the roller. 2.1 Body The body is a rigid structure that supports the rolling frame and is held by the painter. The body bends in a sharp question mark shape, keeping paint away from the painter s hand. The body consists of two components: (1) the handle and (2) the wire that extends from the handle (see Figure 2). Handle Wire Figure 2 Parts of the Body 2.1.1 Handle The handle is a firm shaft made of plastic that is used to hold and manoeuvre the paint roller. It is primarily cylindrical in shape with wings protruding at the top to provide support and stability for the painter s hand. It is 13 cm in length and 3 cm in diameter at the base. Grooves in the handle also provide a better grip, preventing the handle from slipping in the hand (see Figure 3). The handle is hollow with an opening at the bottom. Threads in this opening allow the paint roller to be screwed onto a larger pole, extending the reach of the paint roller (see Figure 3). Attaching the handle to a larger pole is useful to paint high walls or ceilings. Side View Bottom View 3 cm Figure 3 Handle 13 cm 4

2.1.2 Wire The wire extends from the handle and becomes the axis for the roller. Note that the wire continues through the roller. The wire forms a question mark shape that keeps the roller perpendicular to the handle (see Figure 4). This shape allows the painter to apply pressure to the center of the rolling frame while using the handle. Small indents in the wire keep the rolling frame in place. This keeps the rolling frame from grinding against a straight edge of the wire. The wire is made of stainless steel. It is not easily bent, maintaining the intended shape of the paint roller. The dimensions for the wire are presented in Figure 4. The wire keeps the handle away from the roller, minimizing smudges and messes made by the painter s hand. 25 cm 14 cm Figure 4 Wire (Dismantled View) 2.2 Roller The roller is an elongated wheel that absorbs and applies paint. The wire acts as an axis for the roller, allowing it to rotate easily and roll along flat surfaces. The roller is 24 cm in length and 6 cm in diameter. The roller consists of two main components: (1) the disposable sleeve and (2) the rolling frame that it slides on to (see Figure 5). Disposable Sleeve Figure 5 Parts of the Roller (Dismantled View) Rolling Frame 5

2.2.1 Disposable Sleeve The disposable sleeve is a fabric cylinder tube that absorbs and applies paint. The disposable sleeve has a knitted polyester exterior and a hard plastic interior. The nap, or thickness of the knitted polyester, is 10 mm. This thickness allows the disposable sleeve to hold any type of paint and is suitable for smooth and semi-smooth surfaces (OldFields Painting Equipment). The diameter of the hollow center is 4 cm, and the length of the knitted polyester exterior is 1 cm (see Figure). The disposable sleeve is 24 cm in length (see Figure 6). 24 cm Figure 6 Disposable Sleeve 2.2.2 Rolling Frame The rolling frame is a cylindrical cage that the supports disposable sleeve and rotates on the wire, which acts as its axis. The rolling frame consists of four components: (1) the outside end cap, (2) the inside end cap, (3) a washer, and (4) four framing wires (see Figure 7) 1. Washer Inside End Cap Framing Wires Outside End Cap Figure 7 Parts of the Rolling Frame 2.2.2.1 Outside End Cap The outside end cap is a circular cap that acts as a bearing, rotating freely with the wire as its axis. The interior of the outside end cap contains a circular tube in the center and four rectangular tubes equally spaced along the circumference. The circular tube connects loosely to the end of 1 Note that outside and inside refers to the position of the end cap along the wire. 6

the wire. All these tubes close at the back end, and the exterior of the outside end cap is smooth with a circular indent at its base (see Figure 8). The outside end cap is 1.7 cm in length, 3.8 cm in diameter. This diameter is small enough to allow the disposable roller sleeve to slide over it. The outside end cap is made of plastic (see Figure 8). Exterior View Interior View 1.7 cm 3.8 cm Figure 8 Outside End Cap 2.2.2.2 Inside End Cap The inside end cap is a circular cap that acts as a bearing, rotating freely with the wire as its axis. Similar to the outside end cap the interior of the inside end cap contains a circular tube in the center and four rectangular tubes equally spaced along the circumference. However, the circular tube is open at both end, allowing the inside end cap to slide along the wire before being stopped at the indents on the wire (see Figure 9). The inside end cap is 1.7 cm in length and 3.9 cm in diameter at its opening. An extended edge at the base of the inside cap prevents the disposable sleeve from sliding any further along the rolling frame. This edge is 15 mm thick and makes the diameter at the base of the inside end cap 4.2 cm. The inside end cap is made of plastic (see Figure 9). Exterior View Interior View 1.7 cm 3.9 cm Figure 9 Inside End Cap 7

2.2.2.3 Washer The washer is a thin metal disc with a hole in the center. It is threaded onto the wire in between the inside end cap and the indents on the wire. It acts as a guard, preventing damage to the plastic inside end cap. The washer distributes the pressure evenly on the inside end cap against the indents. The washer is 1.2 cm in diameter and 7 mm thick. The hole in the center is 0.6 cm in diameter. The washer is made of stainless steel (see Figure 10). 1.2 cm Figure 10 Washer 2.2.2.4 Framing Wires The four framing wires are steel rods that create a cylindrical cage which the disposable sleeve slides onto. They are inserted and pinched into the four rectangular tubes on both the inside and outside end caps. This secures the framing wires in place and allows them to rotate using the inside and outside end caps as bearings. The framing wires are slightly curved outward to apply pressure to the disposable sleeve, helping it keep its shape. The four framing wires are each 23.8 cm in length and 0.3 cm in diameter, making them thinner than the wire of the body. They are made of stainless steel (see Figure 11). 23.8 cm Figure 11 Framing Wires 8

3. Conclusion The Canadian Tire Paint Roller is a highly functional tool for painting large flat surfaces. It can cover areas quickly and evenly in a short amount of time. The plastic and metal structure and the disposable roller sleeve makes maintenance fast and easy. 3.1 Cycle of Operations A fresh disposable sleeve is secured onto the rolling frame. The Canadian Tire Paint Roller is held at the handle. An appropriate amount of paint is gathered onto the disposable sleeve. Pressure is applied at an acute angle to roll the roller along the surface intended for painting. The roller is consistently and evenly rolled along the surface until the desired amount of paint is applied. Paint is re-gathered onto the disposable sleeve as needed. After the surface is painted, the paint roller is soaked in warm water and scrubbed. The disposable sleeve can be re-used after it is dried. However, for best results, a fresh disposable sleeve is used for separate painting projects. 3.2 Value of the Paint Roller to the User The Canadian Tire Paint Roller is a tool with several features that make painting large surfaces quick and easy. The roller spins smoothly and optimizes the surface area that can be covered in a single stroke. The handle is easy to grasp and prevents common slipping. The centered position of the handle encourages balanced pressure, applying paint evenly along the surface. The threads in the handle make the Canadian Tire Paint Roller versatile for painting high walls or ceilings. The Canadian Tire Paint Roller is easily maintained with warm water. It is an economical tool with a disposable sleeve. 9
