The PROS of Using ECDIS and ENCs ECDIS is a very useful navigation tool, but does not replace the navigator. It is a cost effective option with significant potentials to save lives at Sea and reduce number of groundings. It was designed to make navigation safer and to reduce the workload on navigators. However, the efficiency and usefulness of the equipment is defined by the operating skill of the navigator, his understanding of the information displayed, his appreciation and management of any shortcomings of the equipment and his ability to make optimum use of the information in order to ensure safe navigation. This can only be achieved by proper training. Four aspects are to considered before You choose which product to install On board your vessels: SOFTWARE HARDWARE TYPE APPROVAL CHART SUPPLY

The PROS of Using ECDIS and ENCs The competency in the use of ECDIS is essential for maritime safety. Our company Oceanbulk Container Management shall ensure that any future ECDIS training to our crew, shall meet the criteria of the updated IMO model course (1.27 2012 edition) and we have secure the resources to pay the cost of such training. Company Profile

The PROS of Using ECDIS and ENCs Availability of electronic charts(encs) anytime, everywhere. Speed and Accuracy: (Voyage Plan ). Chart Corrections,( T&P notices) Displayed on the ECDIS. Continuous Monitoring of Vessel s Position in real time.

The PROS of Using ECDIS and ENCs The ECDIS is interfaced with both the vessel s independent GPS transceivers for monitoring the vessels position. Interface the radars with the ECDIS use of Radar Overlay and Echo Referencing facility in the ECDIS and Radar. Continuous position monitoring, during coastal navigation use of ARPA Echo Referencing. Plotting vessel s position using the Range / Bearing method.

Anti Grounding Alarms and Settings. Safety Frame (Look Ahead) The PROS of Using ECDIS and ENCs Shallow Contour. Safety Contour Safety Depth.

Deep Contour. User Determined Alarm Settings Enhances Search and Rescue Capability Cost Efficient elimination of physical deliveries and third party involvement. The PROS of Using ECDIS and ENCs Environmentally Friendly:

The PROS of Using ECDIS and ENCs One thing we all learn in our life is that nothing is perfect. No, not even the ECDIS.

The CONS of Using ECDIS and ENCs Let s see some of the things that go on to prove that nothing is perfect not even the ECDIS. Over Reliance Garbage In Garbage Out (GIGO) Wrong Settings Alarm Deafness System Lag Different Types of ECDIS

The Cons of Using ECDIS and ENCs Anomalies Information Overload Resistance to Change Cyber Security Complacency Obsolete Models Unexpected Damages ENCs Vs Local Paper charts in close or confined waters All said and done, ECDIS is here to stay. This is the future and one cannot just wish it away or cursing it. It is in every navigator s interest to board at the train of technology and be in the same wagon with ECDIS Development. I cannot dispute that even with all peculiarities, the ECDIS may have, is a fantastic piece of equipment and is here to stay.
