Syllabus fr dctral studies in the subject f PLANNING AND DECISION ANALYSIS Schl f Architecture and the Built Envirnment, KTH General regulatins and guidelines fr dctral studies are fund in the cmprehensive KTH regulatins fr dctral studies. This syllabus fr the subject f Planning and Decisin Analysis at the dctral level cmplements the general regulatins and guidelines with the fllwing specific instructins fr the subject area. 1. SUBJECT DESCRIPTION The subject f Planning and Decisin Analysis includes scientific studies that aim t imprve and critically examine the basis fr planning and decisins, especially decisins having majr lng-term cnsequences. Theries and data frm many different fields f knwledge are used in such studies. The subject-specific skills develped within the dctral prgramme are intended fr the critical evaluatin and integratin f such theries and data, and the assessment f their relevance and uncertainties. The theretical basis is taken frm e.g. planning thery, decisin thery, envirnmental systems analysis and thery f science. The subject is divided int three areas f specializatin: - Urban and reginal studies - Envirnmental strategic analysis - Risk and safety Area f specializatin - Urban and reginal studies The area f specializatin Urban and reginal studies cnsists f the analysis f phenmena and prcesses that may be affected by verall urban and reginal planning. The fcus is n sustainable develpment and management f sciety, land and the built envirnment. It includes a view f planning as a changing and demcratic prcess ver time in which players with different resurces and mtives interact with each ther. An imprtant perspective in all research in this subject is t see sciety as an expressin f different scial, cultural, ecnmic and eclgical driving frces, in which changes in ne part ften have cnsequences in ther parts as well as the whle. A fcus is linked t the study f players wh in varius ways seek t influence sciety and the built envirnment; their pwer resurces and institutinal cnditins, the divisin f rles between them and frms f cllabratin and cnflict
management. The area s scientific tls are taken frm the technical, scientific, humanistic and scial science disciplines. Particular emphasis is n theries and methds fr the study f sustainable develpment f sciety. Area f specializatin - Envirnmental strategic analysis The area f specializatin Envirnmental strategic analysis is the analysis f lng-term slutins and knwledge-building n majr envirnmental prblems that require lng-term slutins. The research fcuses n envirnmental prblems that are strategically imprtant glbally and/r in Sweden, but may als include envirnmental prblems that are strategically imprtant fr an industry, a cmpany r an authrity. A systems perspective is applied in this research, in which a scial cntext is taken int accunt in analysis f bth technlgical develpment, infrastructure and prcesses f change. Brader studies f scial and ecnmical sustainable develpment may als be included in the research. Research in the area f envirnmental strategic analysis includes futures studies and tls fr envirnmental assessment and envirnmental management. Prcesses f change are als studied, which include research n behaviur, lifestyles and plicies. Area f specializatin - Risk and safety The area f specializatin Risk and safety cnsists f risk analysis, reliability, vulnerability and security in technical and sci-technical systems. Such analyses aim at prviding a basis fr decisins n risk preventin and safety prmtin measures. Research in this area benefits frm knwledge in different areas such as technlgy, natural science, medical science, scial science and behaviral science, which cntribute t assessing risk and safety. The subjectspecific skill lies in analyzing such data in an integrated way that gives a balanced picture fr decisin-making purpses. The methd chsen is highly dependent n the type f risk and safety issues t be treated. A cmbinatin f quantitative and nn-quantitative methds is ften apprpriate. This subject area als includes studies f risk perceptin and risk cmmunicatin, as well as the scial prcesses in which risk and safety issues are addressed. 2.
