SYSTES FOR THE THICKENING AND DEWATERING OF SLUDGES
BELLER KUFFERATH achinery develops and sells plant and equipment for the dewatering, thickening and sorting of solids. The different AKUPRESS product lines, part of which are patented, have made BELLER KUFFERATH achinery a leading manufacturer of screw presses suitable for dewatering structured, fibrous materials and sludges. DEWATERING AND THICKENING OF SLUDGES Further development and downstream dewatering of slugdes represent a fundamental process both from an economical and ecological viewpoint, especially even in the pulp and paper industry dealing with large quantities of sludge. The principal objectives of downstream sludge dewatering may be: - Reduction of volume and weight to minimize transport and landfill charges - Highest possible dry content and thus higher upper heating value to achieve constant and ecological incineration With the AKUPRESS BX-H and BX- screw press lines BELLER KUFFERATH achinery offers a range of products able to dewater structured sludges, i.e. sludges with sufficient shear resistance, to optimum dry contents. For low inlet consistencies the AKSE S disc thickener is used as pre-thickening unit. AKUPRESS BX-/BX-H SCREW PRESSES AKUPRESS BX-H and BX- screw presses dewater structured sludges from a dry content of 6-16% to 40-70% and meet the requirements on sludge dewatering at best. - Highest and adjustable dry contents (AKUPRESS BX-H) - High and adjustable dry contents (AKUPRESS BX-) AKSE S DISC THICKENER AKSE S disc thickeners dewater sludges from a dry content of 0.5-6% to 8-16%. AKSE S can be used as individual units or particularly as pre-thickener, e.g. upstream of screw presses. In this case they assure both the operation and the economic efficiency of the screw press at low solids contents in the inlet. FLOCCULATION, FLOCCULATION REACTOR Sludges are basically dewatered by adding flucculants. BELLER KUFFERATH achinery supplies a specially designed flocculation reactor for optimal addition of the flocculant.

The process control technology can either be supplied with an own visualisation and operation surface (WinCC) or rather be linked with central process control systems via bus lines.
AKUPRESS BX-H AKUPRESS BX-H is a screw press designed to dewater sludges to dry contentsbetween 50-70%. Both design and function are based upon the patented and well-tried concept of the AKUPRESS X line. The essential distinguishing characteristic about this press type is fact that the length of the pressing zone can be adapted to the properties of the sludge to be dewatered. The throttling action takes place at the press outlet between the spiral-free area of the screw and the screen basket. The torque of the screw is controlled and adapted by changing the pressing zone length during operation. On the one hand, this conceptual design allows to reach extremely highest torques and thus also high dry contents. On the other hand, the torque can be controlled, with the dry content being set in a narrow defined range. AKUPRESS BX- While the conceptual design draws upon the AKUPRESS BX-H line in many parts, the torque has espacially been adapted to the minor demands in terms of dryness, resulting hence in a low-cost solution. The patented torque control system has been adapted from the AKUPRESS BX-H. Both AKUPRESS BX-H and BX- are offered each in five sizes with screw diameters ranging from 250 to 1,400 mm. They are available as short or long version in order to cope with the entire spectrum of dewatering and dry contents at the press inlet. Both AKUPRESS BX-H and BX- stand out due to their simple maintenance requirements, e.g. thanks to their proven and tested interchangeable screen basket system or the flange journals, the screw shaft can easily be changed without opening the bearings.
SLUDGE DEWATERING SYSTES In addition to the optimised individual components we are able to supply a comprehensive range of machinery and equipment that includes complete turnkey systems together with all relevant process control technology, conveying systems and catwalks. The process control technology can either be supplied with an own visualisation and operation surface (WinCC) or rather be linked with central process control systems via bus lines. The standard conveying systems used are spiral-free screw conveyors with the following benefits: - Closed construction, absolutely free from dirt - Even great lengths without additional bearings - Vertical conveying possible Apart from the supply of these systems special engineering services, including sludge analyses, pilot plant trials, installation plans, flow and control schemes and a complete technical documentation, are provided. FR FLOCCULATION REACTOR The FR flocculation reactor is a recipient with flow direction from bottom to top that is equipped with a specially designed agitator. Its essential features are: - High turbulence at the point where the flocculant is added, then decreasing turbulence and formation of flocks - Open top to examine and optimise the flocks - Homogeneous distribution on sundry processes The flocculation reactor is available in five sizes ranging from 10 to 400 m 3 /h. AKSE S CONSTRUCTION AND FUNCTION The sludge to be thickened is directed into the gap formed by two mesh covered discs. These two discs form a pair and are fixed on a central shaft rotating concentrically in a vat. The sludge drains through the mesh and the thickened material is conveyed by the rotation of the discs to the side opposite the inlet, here the thickened stock is thrown out and removed via a discharge chute. AKSE S can be supplied with discs of 1.75 m or 3.00 m diameter, with the shaft allowing to carry up to 10 pairs of discs per unit. Small units having a filter surface of 4 m 2 and also large-scale thickeners of 220 m 2 filter surface are based upon the same operating principle. AKSE S features easy handling, control and maintenance.
