Name Tutor Group Year 7 Extra Challenge PROJECT WORK
Task One Go to the library and find Bar at the Folies Bergére by Edouard Manet make a colour copy (if possible) and stick it into your book. Or you can use the internet. Why is it better to look at reproductions of paintings in books rather than looking on the internet? Edouard Manet Bar at the Folies Bergére (1881) This was Manet s last major work, painted shortly before he died in 1883. He made lots of small sketches at the Folies Bergére then returned to his studio where he drew Suzon the bar maid, the Bottles of Champagne and the bowl of fruit that are in the final composition. Manet s picture of the Bar at the Folies Bergére is painted in oil paint on a canvas that measures 96cm x 130 cm. In this booklet you will be set a range of tasks relating to this painting. If you complete these tasks to a high standard you will be able to achieve a higher level for Art.
Task Two Look closely at the painting of Bar at the Folies Bergére, you will begin to realise there are problems in matching the objects in the foreground with their reflected images. Describe what you can see in the picture, use full sentences and paragraphs. Look carefully at, and include the following: - The main figures, Task Three Make a plan of what you think the room looks like from above. - background figures, - the mirror and mirror frame - and still life (collection of bottles and fruits), - the room, - the gallery/balcony, - the entertainment (look at the top left hand corner), the colours and the shapes More than half the painting is a mirror of reflected images. Make a list of the inaccuracies that you can see between the objects and their reflection. It is apparently impossible to see the audience or the balcony from the bar. Manet has combined different parts of the Folies Bergére which in reality are in totally different parts of the building. Why do you think he did this?
Task Four Make a list of all the objects that are made of glass. A mirror image shows an object in reverse and reduced in size. Place a range of objects (try to include a glass and a bottle) in front of a mirror and draw them and their reflected images.
Task Five Name the country and city where Folies Bergére still is? Task Six Draw your reflection in a spoon. Try to relax your face and look sad like the Bar maid. What is the first thing you notice? Remember how to divide the face, eyes on the half way line, etc. Look up the word Folies in a French dictionary, what does it mean? His paintings of every day scenes from café, bars and streets caused a series of scandals. Why do you think this could have been? What should he have been painting? Just for fun Place your self in front of an ordinary mirror and with an oil crayon or a lipstick make marks on the mirror showing the position of your head. You may be surprised its only half the size of your head. Now try moving away from the mirror and you will find that the reflected image of your head remains the same size as the marks on the mirror Can you explain this?
Task Seven Go back to task one and really look at the paintings then read what you wrote for Task two. Produce a list of 5 words to describe the atmosphere or mood of the painting. Use a thesaurus if you get stuck. Task Eight Collect images of people in public meeting places for example in cafes, shops, at the counters, in a pub etc and make a collage here. Why has Manet represented a noisy exciting nightclub with a sad eyed barmaid? What could she be thinking? What do you think the bar maid is looking at? A customer The artist The crowd You Explain your reasons.
Task Nine Make quick sketches people in an every day scene. You could try drawing your family or friend enjoying a meal, or friends at school. It is tricky to draw people who are moving. How has Manet changed his marks to the show movement of the audience in his painting? Try to use his technique?
Task Ten (a) Produce three different compositions for an image based on a public place. Think about where in the frame of the picture your images should go, what size and colours you would be best to express your own views and feelings about the place and people you have chosen. Use your drawings and the images you collected in Tasks 8 & 9 to help with your designs. Add annotations (notes) to explain your ideas.
Task Ten (b) Using lots of imagination create your own scene from the images you have collected and the drawing you have made. You can create a totally new place/background or use one you have colleted. Remember to create depth, objects and people in the distance are smaller and less detailed. Task 11 Evaluate your work. Using full sentences and paragraphs describe your final piece and how it links to the style of Manet. Do you think your work is successful, what might you do differently? Please ask your teacher for a larger separate piece of paper to complete this task on and hand it in with your books.
