1. PREAMBLE Mbile devices prvide a number f tls that can be used t supprt students learning. This includes the ability t film, phtgraph, recrd audi and take ntes. Furthermre, these devices are capable f prviding access t the internet. This plicy is designed t give staff and students the pprtunity t make the best pssible use f available hand held devices t facilitate learning when apprpriate and authrised. 2. RATIONALE The prliferatin f mbile devices in mdern Australian sciety, and the increasing desire f parents t supply their children with mbile devices t aid families in cmmunicatin, necessitates a specific plicy that addresses the use f such devices use in schl. 3. AIMS San Clemente s Mbile Device Plicy aims: 3.1 T prvide a safe, happy and psitive learning envirnment fr ur students and staff. 3.2 T develp structures and practices that supprts the individual student and members f the Schl cmmunity in their scial develpment. 3.3 T supprt the applicatin f the Schl s Pastral Care, ICT and Anti- Bullying Plicies. 4. REGULATIONS Students are permitted t use their mbile devices at the Schl prvided they adhere t the fllwing regulatins: Expectatins 4.1 The Schl des nt accept any respnsibility fr the lss, damage, theft r misuse f any mbile device. Student mbile devices shuld nt be left in schl bags when the bags are unattended, particularly at recess and lunch times. Students bring their mbile devices t schl at their wn risk and are respnsible fr them at all times. 4.2 During classes the use f any mbile device will be at the discretin f and directed by the supervising teacher. The device must be switched t ff unless therwise directed by the teacher. Page 1

4.3 Mbile devices may be used in shrt breaks between lessns fr rganisatinal purpses nly i.e. t access calendars etc. Inapprpriate Use 4.4 Students must nt be walking while having a cnversatin r using the device but instead must be seated in an apprpriate area. The use f any mbile device will be allwed befre schl, at recess, lunch and after schl and it is the student s respnsibility t ensure the device is used apprpriately. 4.5 The student is nt t use the device t breach anyne s privacy. Filming, phtgraphy and audi recrdings are nly t be made with permissin f the supervising teacher and are t be fr specific educatinal purpses. PLEASE NOTE: the filming f incidents is a serius ffence and may jepardise the student s enrlment at the San Clemente. 4.6 Any use f the device t harass, intimidate, threaten r bully ther students r staff will be immediately reprted t the plice and may jepardise the student s enrlment at the Schl. PLEASE NOTE: Staff ha ve the right t cnfiscate any device if it is believed there is evidence related t an incident r incidents f a criminal nature recrded n the phne. This phne will be prvided fr any plice investigatin shuld it be required. 4.7 Mbile devices are nt t have ffensive ring r message tnes. Inapprpriate images are nt t be used as screen savers and these images shuld nt be stred n any device. 4.8 The Schl des nt accept respnsibility fr expensive equipment that students bring t schl and leave in unattended bags. Mbile devices shuld be kept n the student r depsited with the Frnt Office at the start f the day. 4.9 Mbile devices are nt permitted t be with a student during a frmal examinatin. 4.10 Prir t schl examinatins, students are required t hand their mbile devices t the staff member in charge. 4.11 The use f mbile devices n schl based excursins is at the discretin f the supervising staff member/s. 4.12 Inapprpriate use f any mbile device may lead t the device being cnfiscated and secured in the Frnt Office fr cllectin at the end f the schl day. Refusal t hand ver the mbile device Page 2

will result in immediate referral t the relevant Teaching & Learning Crdinatr and/r the Assistant Principal. Repeated inapprpriate use may lead t the privilege f having the device at schl withdrawn at the discretin f the relevant Crdinatr r Assistant Principal. PLEASE NOTE the fllwing expectatins apply when students are listening t devices using earphnes. The supervising teacher will use their discretin in deciding whether it is apprpriate fr a student/s t be listening t a mbile device with earphnes. In making this decisin, teachers will take int accunt a number f factrs, including the nature f the wrk that students are engaged in and the safety f students. These devices are nt t be used at any time in situatins when their use wuld cmprmise safety. Further t this, the fllwing expectatins apply: the Schl allws the use f earphnes but des nt accept the use f headphnes (earphnes sit discreetly in the ear); earphnes are t be remved fr all annuncements including daily prayer; earphnes are t be remved when any staff member is talking with a student; mbile devices are nt t be used, under any circumstances, during hmerm; listening with earphnes at a high vlume damages hearing. Peple in clse prximity t the student listening shuld nt be able t hear what is being played. students are encuraged t have their wn persnal set f earphnes. Sharing earphnes is nt hygienic. Students are discuraged frm using this practice. Students are nt permitted t walk arund the Schl with earphnes in as it cmprmises safety. Additinally, they shuld nt be visible when nt being used, including any that are seen hanging lsely ver the frnts f students. Page 3

5. EVALUATION San Clemente s Mbile Device Plicy shall be clearly dcumented and reviewed as necessary t evaluate its currency. Relevant stakehlders f the Schl, including students, staff, parents and the cmmunity, will be cnsulted in assessing the effectiveness f the plicy. Recmmendatins will be cnsidered and apprpriate amendments made if required. The Plicy will be evaluated by cmmunity stakehlders: at staff, P & F, Student Leadership & SRC meetings thrugh surveys thrugh infrmal discussin and general feedback by ther means deemed apprpriate Page 4
