Geometry Honors Logic Problem Project Name: Date: Background: In Chapter 2, you are introduced to deductive reasoning as well as paragraph and 2- column proofs. This project is intended to help you to acquire additional experience in those areas. Logistics: Select 3 of the 4 logic problems to solve Requirements: 1. Title Page: name(s), period, problems to be solved 2. Problem Page(s): For each problem a. Provide a detailed description of the logic problem to be solved b. Logical conclusion of the problem c. Present a paragraph proof or 2- column proof to support each conclusion 3. Summary Page: Write a couple of paragraphs describing what you learned by doing this project. What were some of the difficulties you encountered? ***Problems can be hand written, but title page, paragraph proof, and summary page should be computer generated.***
Logic Problem #1: Monster Ball. On Halloween, the favorite gathering place for movie monsters is Dracula's castle, site of the annual Monster Ball. The Count's intolerance of daylight limits his ability to shop for party items, so his four best monster friends each brought a different necessity to this year's party. Each of them showed up wearing a different Halloween costume; one came as Cinderella. Thanks to their help, the guests had a ghoulishly good time. Determine the order in which each monster arrived at the Ball, the costume he wore, and the item(s) he contributed. 1. The monster dressed as Papa Smurf arrived just before the Creature from the Black Lagoon, who arrived sometime just before the monster who brought the pumpkins for the guests to carve into jack- o'- lanterns. 2. Wolfman arrived sometime before the monster who brought apples for bobbing, who arrived sometime before the monster who dressed up as Tinker Bell. 3. The four monsters are, in some order: Frankenstein, the one who brought his CD collection (which included "Monster Mash"}, the one who wore a Peter Cottontail costume, and the third monster to arrive. 4. The monster who brought a horror- movie trivia game arrived sometime before the Thing (who didn't come dressed as Papa Smurf). 5. During the evening, Frankenstein and the monster who brought the pumpkins talked about collaborating on a screenplay for a future movie.
Logic problem #2: Movie Cast Party The cast of the new horror film Scary Stuff threw a costume party for Halloween. The actors and actresses- - Bela, Boris, Elsa, Fay, Lon, Mary, and Vincent - - were dressed (in no particular order) as Dracula, Mr. Hyde, Frankenstein's Monster, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, the Wolf Man, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. From the following, can you determine who wore which costume? 1. Boris and Fay played monsters with human alter egos. 2. Lon and Elsa played the monsters of non- European origin. 3. Elsa, Mary, and Vincent played monsters that came back from the dead. 4. Fay and Mary played monsters seen only at night.
Logic problem #3: Dressed for Halloween The children of Poland Avenue dressed up for halloween and they then went out trick or treating. Who dressed up in which costume and how many treats did they collect? Boris collected more treats than Selina and also collected more treats than the wizard, which was not Selina's choice of costume. Glen dressed up as a Ghost or a Werewolf and did not collect an even number of sweets. The witch collected fewer treats than Jessie but more than Selina. Trish wore the pumpkin costume or witch costume and collected 6 fewer sweets than the child that wore the ghost costume. The child wearing the pumpkin costume collected fewer treats than the child wearing the werewolf outfit.
Logic problem #4: Which Witch? Five witches have all been busily preparing for Halloween. Each witch has spent hours touching up their broomsticks with fresh paint, grooming their cats and massaging their warty faces into the most gruesome spectacle. Which witch owns which cat and owns which color broomstick? Broomstick colors: Blue/green Stripes, black and yellow, green and orange, orange and red, fluorescent yellow. 1. Wanda detests red and black and refuses to paint her broomstick in these colors. 2. Glenda owns a cat appropriately named for grooming purposes: Cat- acomb, but green is not included in her broomstick colour scheme. 3. Waffle is rather partial to her broomstick, containing green, but she doesn't own a cat called Cat- astrophe. 4. Warty does not own Cat- erpillar, who rides on a broomstick containing yellow and Warty's broomstick does not contain orange. 5. Cat- arrh is often screeching "Argh!" as he is whisked across the nighttime sky on an orange and red broomstick. Does Griselda own Cat- alyst?
