Dorchester County Tourism Heart of Chesapeake Country Heritage Area 2 Rose Hill Place Cambridge, Maryland 21613 p 410-228-1000 f 410-221-6545 www.visitdorchester.org REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS Two Outdoor Murals: Creation, Fabrication and Installation Along the Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway The Dorchester County Tourism Department is accepting proposals from mural artists for the design and execution of two (2) murals along the Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway. The murals will display a unique historical snapshot of the local area to engage travelers along the byway and enhance their appreciation of unique qualities of Chesapeake Country. The murals will reflect Chesapeake themes of agriculture, local/national history, natural history and the Chesapeake Bay. We are seeking a professional muralist to execute this project from design through installation. The locations of the murals have been selected. The bidder will recommend the most appropriate designs, submit two concept drawings, and estimate costs for each location, based on time and materials. All bidders must be registered on emarylandmarketplace.com to be considered. Once selected, the artist will present detailed concepts to those approving the design. Mural Content and Resources The mural s final design should be consistent with the Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan (CMP), embodying its guiding principles into a visually attractive and stimulating mural design. Interpretive principles applicable to this project include: 1) Evoke the character of the Chesapeake Country 2) Provide a reason to travelers for further exploration 3) Reflect the heritage and culture of the communities, landscapes and natural resources As stated in the CMP, the Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway weaves together the multifaceted layers of nationally significant maritime and agricultural heritage from Native Americans to the modern era reflecting the distinct sense of time and place as captured in James Michener s novel Chesapeake. The Byway serves as the main route of heritage tourism in the heart of Maryland s Eastern Shore helping heritage travelers find and enjoy distinctive destinations and beautiful places where land and water merge into the Chesapeake Bay. Content should be appropriate to the site and should incorporate themes and topics from James Michener s novel Chesapeake (1978). The novel is divided into 14 sections or voyages covering the period 1583 to 1978, including events that took place in the fictional landscapes of the Eastern Shore. The Corridor Management Plan for the Chesapeake Country Byway can be seen here: http://www.lardnerklein.com/mcsb_index.html. About the Project The bid should include for each mural: the artist fee, site preparation costs, supplies, any travel-related expenses and associated costs. The dimensions in this RFP are approximate. The artist will need to ascertain the exact measurements and square footage of each mural site.
The artist will be required to apply a protective coating to the final products that should be included in the quote. The medium must be durable, cleanable, and strong enough to stand up to outdoor elements for at least ten years. The proposed designs will undergo review and approval by the property owner, representatives of sponsoring entities and/or a mural committee. Revised drawings may be needed before a final design is approved. The artist must include branding this mural as part of the series of Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway murals. Some type of acknowledgement of the National Scenic Byways Program may also need to be included. Rights and Materials All rights and materials will become the property of Dorchester County Tourism. After being hired, the artist may be asked to present a design package for project sponsors.
