General Description The MAX6711/MAX6712/MAX6713 are microprocessor (µp) supervisory circuits used to monitor the power supplies in µp and digital systems. They provide excellent circuit reliability and low cost by eliminating external components and adjustments when used with +5.0, +3.3, +3.0, or +2.5-powered circuits. They also provide a debounced manual reset input. These circuits assert a reset signal whenever the CC supply voltage declines below a preset threshold or whenever manual reset is asserted. Reset remains asserted for at least 140ms after CC has risen above the reset threshold or when manual reset is deasserted. Reset thresholds suitable for operation with a variety of supply voltages are available. The MAX6713 has an open-drain output stage, while the MAX6711/MAX6712 have push-pull outputs. The MAX6713 s open-drain output requires a pull-up resistor that can be connected to a voltage higher than CC. The MAX6711/MAX6713 have an active-low reset output, while the MAX6712 has an active-high reset output. The reset comparator is designed to ignore fast transients on CC, and the outputs are guaranteed to be in the correct logic state for CC down to 1. Low supply current makes the MAX6711/MAX6712/ MAX6713 ideal for use in portable equipment. These devices are available in a 4-pin SC70 package. Maximum Transient Duration Without Causing a Reset Pulse vs. Reset Comparator Overdrive Detailed Description output remains low while CC is below the reset threshold, and for at least 140ms after CC rises above the reset threshold. output remains high while CC is below the reset threshold, and for at least 140ms after CC rises above the reset threshold. Manual Reset Input. () remains asserted as long as MR is low, and for at least 140ms after MR is deasserted. This active-low input has an internal 20kW (typ) pull-up resistor. It can be driven from a TTL- or CMOS- logic line, or shorted to ground with a switch. Leave open or connect to CC if unused. 4 CC Supply oltage (+5.0, +3.3, +3.0, or +2.5) MAXIMUM TRANSIENT DURATION (µs) 400 320 240 160 80 T A = +25C MAX671_L/M MAX671_R/S/T/Z 0 1 10 100 1000 COMPARATOR OERDRIE, TH - CC (m) Reset Output A microprocessor's (µp's) reset input starts the µp in a known state. The MAX6711/MAX6712/MAX6713 assert reset to prevent code-execution errors during powerup, power-down, or brownout conditions. They assert a reset signal whenever the CC supply voltage declines below a preset threshold, keeping it asserted for at MR CC MAX6711 Figure 2. alid to CC = Ground Circuit least 140ms after CC has risen above the reset threshold. The MAX6713 uses an open-drain output, and the MAX6711/MAX6712 have a push-pull output stage. Connect a pull-up resistor on the MAX6713's output to any supply between 0 and 6. Manual Reset Input Many µp-based systems require manual reset capability, allowing the operator, a test technician, or external logic circuitry to initiate a reset. Reset remains asserted while MR is low, and for at least 140ms after MR returns high. This input has an internal 20kΩ pullup resistor, so it can be left open if it is not used. MR can be driven with TTL- or CMOS-logic levels, or with open-drain/collector outputs. To create a manual reset function, connect a normally open momentary switch from MR to ground; external debounce circuitry is not required. If MR is driven from long cables or if the device is used in a noisy environment, connecting a 0.1µF capacitor from MR to ground provides additional noise immunity. Applications Information R1 100k Negative-Going CC Transients In addition to issuing a reset to the µp during power-up, power-down, and brownout conditions, the MAX6711/ MAX6712/MAX6713 are relatively immune to short-duration negative-going CC transients (glitches). Figure 1 shows typical transient duration vs. reset comparator overdrive, for which the MAX6711/MAX6712/ MAX6713 do not generate a reset pulse. The graph was generated using a negative-going pulse applied to CC, starting 0.5 above the actual reset threshold and ending below it by the magnitude indicated (reset comparator overdrive). The graph indicates the maximum pulse width a negative-going CC transient can have without causing a reset pulse. As the magnitude of the transient increases (goes farther below the reset threshold), the www.maximintegrated.com Maxim Integrated 5

CC +3.3 +5.0 CC CC CC CC MAX6713 µp MOTOROLA 68HCXX INPUT MAX6713 R PULLUP INPUT 5 SYSTEM MR Figure 3. Interfacing to μps with Bidirectional Reset I/O Figure 4. MAX6713 Open-Drain Output Allows Use with Multiple Supplies maximum allowable pulse width decreases. Typically, for the MAX671_L and MAX671_M, a CC transient that goes 100m below the reset threshold and lasts 20µs or less will not cause a reset pulse. A 0.1µF bypass capacitor mounted as close as possible to the CC pin provides additional transient immunity. Ensuring a alid Reset Output Down to CC = 0 When CC falls below 1, the MAX6711 output no longer sinks current it becomes an open circuit. Therefore, high-impedance CMOS-logic inputs connected to can drift to undetermined voltages. This presents no problem in most applications since most µp and other circuitry is inoperative with CC below 1. However, in applications where must be valid down to 0, adding a pull-down resistor to causes any stray leakage currents to flow to ground, holding low (Figure 2). R1's value is not critical; 100kΩ is large enough not to load and small enough to pull to ground. A 100kΩ pull-up resistor to CC is also recommended for the MAX6712 if is required to remain valid for CC < 1.66 Interfacing to µps with Bidirectional Reset Pins Since the output on the MAX6713 is opendrain, this device interfaces easily with µps that have bidirectional reset pins, such as the Motorola 68HC11. Connecting the µp supervisor's output directly to the µp's pin with a single pull-up resistor allows either device to assert reset (Figure 3). MAX6713 Open-Drain Output Allows Use with Multiple Supplies Generally, the pull-up connected to the MAX6713 will connect to the supply voltage that is being monitored at the IC's CC pin. However, some systems may use the open-drain output to level-shift from the monitored supply to reset circuitry powered by some other supply (Figure 4). Note that as the MAX6713's CC decreases below 1, so does the IC's ability to sink current at. Also, with any pullup, will be pulled high as CC decays toward 0. The voltage where this occurs depends on the pull-up resistor value and the voltage to which it is connected. Benefits of Highly Accurate Reset Threshold Most µp supervisor ICs have reset threshold voltages between 5% and 10% below the value of nominal supply voltages. This ensures a reset will not occur within 5% of the nominal supply, but will occur when the supply is 10% below nominal. When using ICs rated at only the nominal supply ±5%, a zone of uncertainty where the supply is between 5% and 10% low, and where the reset may or may not be asserted is left. The MAX671_L/T/Z use highly accurate circuitry to ensure that reset is asserted close to the 5% limit, and long before the supply has declined to 10% below nominal.
