NextGen 2016 Award winners Daniela Pillhofer and Peter Honegger Co-founders and Managing Directors of Newcomer Wines Ltd. When people in London think about wine-producing countries beginning with A, there is usually only one that comes to mind: Australia. But two young entrepreneurs are trying to change that by introducing a wider audience to the great wines from another country beginning with A: Austria. And they are having considerable success doing so. Peter Honegger and Daniela Pillhofer launched Newcomer Wines in London in early 2014 to champion Austrian wine, and in particular what Peter calls authentic Austrian off-piste wines. The idea to start our own company emerged during our first year at university, he says. We knew that you could buy good Austrian wines in London, but only in small quantities, with limited variety. And they were also very expensive. Only the best-known brands were being showcased. We thought to ourselves, what about the hidden wine gems Austria has to offer? Peter and Daniela had come to London to further their studies Peter at Cass Business School and Daniela at the London School of Economics (LSE). It was not long into their studies that their entrepreneurial ambitions began to emerge. Peter had developed a love of wine earlier on. He was brought up in a family linked to the hospitality industry. His father runs a hotel in Vienna. And from the age of 14, Peter attended a school that focused on hospitality and tourism. Later, he earned Youth Sommelier certification with distinction from the Austrian Wine Academy. While at LSE, Daniela joined a wine appreciation society and began to take wine more seriously as a potential career option. Together with her increasing interest in wine, Daniela s desire to do her own thing rather than work for a big company began to take hold. But the pair knew that if they were to break into the hugely competitive world of wine retailing, they would need to come up with something special. As part of their wine revolution, the pair opened their first store in the Shoreditch area of London, known as the city s center of hipster culture. The area is full of young, affluent consumers the perfect demographic for Newcomer. They have worked to offer a distinctive in-store experience for their customers. It was important to create a relaxing environment in which winemakers and customers could closely interact, says Daniela. We created dedicated winemaker areas to let the winemakers take the center stage of the shopping experience. And technology is at the heart of this. We provide tablets so customers can watch a short video clip on each producer. We also feature an old wine barrel with a built-in multi-touch screen that allows customers to browse through our whole selection. Perhaps the most extraordinary part of the Newcomer Wines story is that the company was set up when Peter and Daniela were still studying. The business achieved a profit within its first six months of operation. And in 2015, it had revenues of 300,000. Peter and Daniela are both members of the EY NextGen Club and are clearly outstanding examples of young entrepreneurs following their dreams. With plans to open further stores and grow the e-commerce side of the business, who knows: maybe one day Austrian wines will be as well known in the UK as their Australian counterparts. 10 Does disruption knock you off course or inspire new paths of growth?
