Research projects: This project aims to develop algorithms for hybrid satellite-terrestrial communication systems. Since cost is a very important issue in the case of satellite based systems. After getting one into orbit, it has to be monitored from ground continuously and there is no scope of modification in the satellite circuitry. Nevertheless, we can improve the performance of satellite communication systems by using the tools of cooperative signal processing at the earth stations. In the hybrid satelliteterrestrial cooperative systems, the cooperation is performed at the earth surface between different earth stations such that the overall quality of the satellite communications is improved. However, due to the complex fading model of the satellite links, many analytical performance results of these systems are not known so far. We will explore several useful cooperative techniques for hybrid satellite-terrestrial cooperative systems in our work, which would ensure the performance gain of hybrid satellite-terrestrial systems, without modifying satellites parameters. The objectives of this project are as follows: 1. Design of channel estimation protocols for hybrid satellite terrestrial systems 2. Study of beamforming and combining in hybrid satellite terrestrial systems 3. Study of two-way mobile satellite relaying 4. Design of relay selection protocol for hybrid satellite terrestrial systems
