Allen Prize Symposium: Global Challenges, Courage, Leadership Monday, March 14, 2011 Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts Georgia Institute of Technology

The Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Social Courage On March 15, 2011, Georgia Tech will make the inaugural presentation of the Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Social Courage. The prize is awarded in honor of Ivan Allen Jr., who was a pivotal leader during America s struggle for racial integration during the 1960s. As mayor of Atlanta, Ivan Allen Jr. was steadfast and courageous in advancing the public accommodation for African Americans. Ultimately, he risked his place in society, his political future, and his life to testify before Congress in support of what became the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Georgia Tech is privileged to illuminate the legacy of this great man. The Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Social Courage is the Institute s preeminent award. Underscoring the Institute s mission to advance the human condition, the Prize recognizes those around the globe who, by standing up for moral principle, have made a positive difference at the risk of their own careers, their livelihoods, and even their lives. The inaugural recipient of the Allen Prize is one of the nation s most respected and visionary leaders on national defense, security, and nuclear non-proliferation: the Honorable Sam Nunn. For nearly a quarter of a century as a U.S. Senator from Georgia and for a decade as the leader of the influential Nuclear Threat Initiative, Sam Nunn has helped our nation navigate toward a more peaceful, secure, and prosperous future. His recent work with former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz, former U.S. Secretary of Defense William Perry, and former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has galvanized global support for and action on the vision of a world free of nuclear weapons and the urgent steps needed to reach that goal. Like Mayor Allen, Senator Nunn s civic vision, social courage, and ethical leadership is advancing us toward a more just and humane world. All of the great leaders have had one characteristic in common: it was the willingness to confront unequivocally the major anxiety of their people in their time. John Kenneth Galbraith

The Allen Prize Symposium: Global Challenges, Courage, Leadership The Allen Prize Symposium brings to the Georgia Tech community an opportunity to consider the grand challenges facing our world, to illuminate the trends that are shaping our future, and to engage with a cadre of leaders who are making measurable progress toward a vision of peace and security. The program invites participants to think through and beyond current challenges to consider how we as individuals can lead with courage and commitment and take concrete steps toward positive change. The springboard for the symposium is Seven Revolutions, a presentation developed by one of the world s preeminent international policy institutions, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C., of which Senator Nunn is chairman of the Board of Trustees. The Seven Revolutions project identifies and analyzes the key policy challenges that policymakers, business figures, and other leaders will face through the year 2025 with a goal of promoting strategic thinking about long-term trends. The strategic insights from the presentation will form the basis for discussions with some of our nation s most influential and successful policy leaders and decision makers in government, international institutions, the private sector, and civil society. Insights will range from progress in stemming the threat of global nuclear destruction to the successes of global and community-based nonprofit volunteer organizations. The 2011 Allen Prize Symposium has been shaped by the vision of Senator Nunn with a goal of presenting the opportunities and risks, tools, policies, and actions needed to transform the status quo to a new way to live and interact as global citizens. It is a call to think seriously about the events that are over the horizon and to embrace social courage and ethical leadership to shape a peaceful and secure world.
