This commnd is clled the Strt Mesurement commnd The 5 in this commnd is the ddress of the sensor you wish to respond to the commnd It will cuse the SDI12 sensor to begin the process of tking set of

Pge 15 mesurements The sensor will immeditely respond to this commnd s follows: 50019<CR><LF> This response strts with the ddress of the sensor (5), then continues with the number of seconds tht re required to tke the redings, 001 (1 second), then finishes with the number of dt items tht will be returned with ech mesurement request (9) Every response from the sensor is terminted with crrige return nd line feed chrcter After the sensor hs finished its mesurements it trnsmits service request to the recorder: 5<CR><LF> The service request is just the ddress of the sensor The recorder then sends commnd to get the first set of dt items: 5D0! The items requested re: volumetric wter content, soil temperture, soil permittivity nd soil electricl conductivity Upon receiving this commnd the sensor responds with: 5+2503+3216+3213+16<CR><LF> The first 5 is the sensor ddress The remining string contins the requested dt items ech preceded by + or - sign This completes the four bsic redings from the sensor If the user desires the dditionl 5 dt items form the sensor he would progrm the dt recorder to issue the 2nd dt retrievl commnd, D1! D1! The sensor responds with: +3420+2710+5405+5325+5340+320<CR><LF> Here gin the leding 5 is the ddress of the sensor The remining string contins the dt items: wveform mximum rise time, wveform mplitude t mximum rise time, wveform propgtion time t mximum rise time, uncompensted propgtion time, compensted propgtion time, nd wveform mesurement spn Recorder Commnd Synt x Sensor Response Strt Non-Concurrent Mesurement 5M! 50019 (ddr, time, #redings)

The sensor immeditely responds with: 500109 With concurrent commnds the sensor does not provide service request fter the mesurements hve been mde The recorder relies on the timing informtion provided by the sensor nd will not request dt until the time intervl hs expired in this cse 1 second The recorder then requests the four dt items exctly in the sme mnner s with non-concurrent redings If the remining 6 dt items re desired the recorder issues the D1! commnd to get them The commnds nd responses re summrized in the tble below: Recorder Commnd Syntx Sensor Response Strt Non-Concurrent Mesurement 5C! 500109 (ddr, time, #redings) Get First Four Dt Items 5D0! 5+2503+3216+3213+16<CR><LF> Get Remining 6 Dt Items 5D1! +3420+2710+5405+5325+5340+320<CR>< LF> Note the difference between the two tbles: The concurrent commnd uses C insted of M, nd there is no service request from the sensor Also the initil sensor response llows for 99 redings insted of 9 redings

Pge 17 Dt Communictions Error Checking So fr, ll Strt Mesurement Commnds tht we hve discussed hve requested dt wherein no error checking is done to verify the correct reception of the dt by the recorder The SDI-12 specifiction provides for error checking by using n dditionl commnd chrcter C with the Strt Mesurement commnd Thus when the commnds MC! or CC! re trnsmitted to the sensor, the sensor ppends CRC code to the end of the returned dt This code is generted from the dt in such mnner tht if the dt chnges in the trnsmission the chnge cn be detected in the recorder If the recorder experiences such corruption in the dt it will repet the dt request utomticlly 336 Verify Commnd The SDI-12 specifiction requires specil commnd for the purpose of verifying tht the sensor is working properly Acclim s implementtion of tht commnd is s follows: 1 The recorder sends out the verify commnd: V! 2 Upon receiving the verify commnd the sensor will respond with: tttn where is the sensor ddress, ttt is the time required to mke verifiction redings, nd n is the number of dt items tht will be returned For this commnd ttt = 003 nd n = 1 3 The sensor tkes 3 full sets of redings The corrected propgtion times from the three redings re sved nd compred If ny of these propgtion times re out rnge or if they differ by n uncceptble mount n error is cknowledged Next the volumetric wter content is clculted from the men of the three redings The sensor then sends out service request: 4 The recorder issues red dt commnd D0: D0! The sensor responds with the volumetric wter content or, if n error occurred in the reding, the returned dt field will contin E (for Error)

Pge 18 Verify Commnd The SDI-12 specifiction requires specil commnd for the purpose of verifying tht the sensor is working properly Acclim s implementtion of tht commnd is s follows: 1 The recorder sends out the verify commnd: V! The sensor responds with the volumetric wter content or, if n error occurred in the reding, the returned dt field will contin E (for Error) Specil Acclim-Proprietry Commnds The SDI-12 specifiction llows the use of proprietry commnds for use by mnufcturers nd users in clibrting sensors or implementing specil fetures vilble in the sensor Acclim tkes dvntge of this llownce in providing ccess to clibrtion constnts nd wveform downlods Reding nd Setting clibrtion constnts: The clibrtion constnts stored in the SDI12 series sensors re used in setting the zero nd full scle redings nd for temperture compenstion of the redings The sensor tolertion to electricl conductivity cn lso be extended to bout 10 ds/m by setting conductivity compenstion fctors The zero, full scle nd temperture compenstion fctors re set in the fctory nd should not be chnged You my red them if you wish using the commnds given below The conductivity compenstion numbers tht re shipped in the sensor re defult numbers only nd do not gurntee ccurte opertion in environments where the soil conductivity exceeds 5 ds/m Below 5dS/m no compenstion is necessry If you wish to work in very high slinity soils you cn plce sensor order with the fctory nd sk to hve those constnts set
