The ILRP will be engaging up t 4 pstdctral fellws in 2017. Cntext Abut CIGI CIGI is an independent, nn-partisan think tank n internatinal gvernance. Led by experienced practitiners and distinguished academics, CIGI supprts research, frms netwrks, advances plicy debate and generates ideas fr multilateral gvernance imprvements. Abut ILRP The ILRP is a $60-millin, ten-year, multi-disciplinary internatinal law research prgram lcated at the award-winning CIGI Campus in Waterl, Ontari, prximate t the Balsillie Schl f Internatinal Affairs. The ILRP schlarship prgram aims t develp wrld-class intellectual strength in the areas f internatinal law that are mst imprtant t glbal innvatin, prsperity, sustainability and security. The ILRP s areas f research fcus In cnsultatin with public, private, academic and civil sciety sectr experts in internatinal and transnatinal law, the ILRP has develped a research wrk plan fcused n advancing knwledge and understanding in three vital areas f internatinal law, set ut belw. In pursuing its wrk plan, the ILRP is interested in empirical case studies, analysis f the efficacy f internatinal law regimes, and interdisciplinary research that cnsiders the impacts n human security, rights and develpment. The ILRP is als develping a research agenda n internatinal indigenus law issues that crss-cut its three areas f research fcus: 1. Internatinal ecnmic law: Emerging issues in internatinal financial law, particularly: Transnatinal gvernance and regulatin f inslvency and svereign debt New technlgies, such as blckchain, and financial law Emerging issues in internatinal trade law, particularly: Multilateral and preferential trade agreements in times f ecnmic natinalism Renegtiating NAFTA and a prgressive trade agenda Sub-federal gvernment and trade negtiatins Emerging issues in internatinal investment law, particularly: Investr-State arbitratin and the emerging investment curt system Hme state respnsibilities and Investr bligatins 2. Internatinal intellectual prperty (IIP) law and innvatin: Mdernizing internatinal and dmestic legal framewrks fr Internet gvernance and the new frntiers f IP rights in the Furth Industrial Age; Creating internatinal and dmestic legal framewrks and plicies t encurage green/clean technlgy develpment and transfer; Develping IIP mechanisms fr pen and cllabrative innvatin; Evaluating the impacts f preferential trade agreements n IIP rights; Management f IP rights including IP evaluatin, IP strategy, IP cmmercialisatin and university-generated IP;
Develping best practice mdels fr the prtectin f traditinal knwledge, genetic resurces and traditinal cultural expressin. 3. Internatinal envirnmental law: Assessing the efficacy f bilateral r reginal envirnmental agreements vs. multilateral envirnmental agreements Internatinal r transnatinal gvernance and regulatin f the extractive industry and energy sectr, including UNHCHR (Jhn Knx) cncept f envirnmental prtectin as a human right; relatins between indigenus peples and extractive industries Implementing climate change cmmitments thrugh internatinal, transnatinal, natinal and sub-natinal legal, plicy and market-based instruments (case studies) Cnsidering the intersectin f the internatinal climate change regime with ther areas f internatinal law such as trade law, shipping and aviatin law, indigenus rights and human rights. 4. Internatinal Indigenus law Implementatin f the United Natins Declaratin n the Rights f Indigenus Peples int Canadian law Increasing participatin f Indigenus peples in Internatinal Law and Treaty-making Interlinkages between internatinal trade and investment law and Indigenus trade. Infrastructure and supprt During the perid f residency each pst-dctral fellw will be prvided wrk and study space in the CIGI Campus building as well as access t ur library and related research resurces. A cmputer, telephne, internet and e-mail access will be prvided. Pstdctral fellws will be supprted in CIGI research-related travel and event participatin. Residency at the CIGI Campus building will ffer pst-dctral fellws an pprtunity t pursue plicy relevant research in a think-tank envirnment with ther experienced researchers and senir fellws wh are studying related issues f internatinal law, as well as t participate actively in the ILRP internatinal law research wrk prgram and relevant CIGI and ILRP schlarly and prfessinal activities. CIGI will prvide guidance t pst-dctral fellws wh require assistance finding suitable accmmdatin fr the duratin f their perid f residency at the CIGI Campus. Value and Duratin CIGI s ILRP Pstdctral Fellwships are valued at $80,000 per year fr tw years, with the pssibility f renewal thrugh mutual agreement. Eligibility In rder t be eligible fr, receive, and maintain CIGI ILRP funding, all candidates are expected t meet and fllw the eligibility requirements utlined belw: Eligibility t apply
T apply t this emplyment pprtunity, candidates must be citizens r permanent residents f Canada (status must be btained by the applicatin deadline), r internatinal candidates eligible fr a Canadian wrk permit. Candidates must als be current SJD/PhD students in Law, r have earned such degree n earlier than September 2015. The candidate s prpsed research cntributins must be relevant t ILRP current and future areas f research fcus. Residency Pst-dctral fellws are required t be in full time residence at the CIGI Campus building in Waterl, Ontari. Medical insurance Pst-dctral fellws must btain adequate medical insurance during their stay at CIGI if relcating frm utside the prvince f Ontari. Pst-dctral fellws frm Canadian prvinces ther than Ontari may be eligible fr the Ontari Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), the gvernment-run health insurance plan in place within the Prvince f Ontari. Hwever, all pstdctral fellws are required t ensure that they have suitable health insurance either thrugh OHIP r private insurer befre taking up residency with the ILRP. Deliverables Pst-dctral fellws are expected t wrk under the directin f the ILRP directr f deputy directr t develp an annual wrkplan f CIGI ILRP deliverables (papers, plicy briefs, pinin pieces, reprts, vides, cnferences, wrkshps, etc.. Academic supervisin may als be available. CIGI may cancel the pst-dctral fellwship if the candidate s prgress is judged unsatisfactry by the directr and/r relevant deputy directr f the ILRP. Up-t-date curriculum vitae; 4. Three references, at least tw f which are academic references;
5. A list f previus awards/publicatins/cnference/research experience; and 6. Official transcripts f all pst-secndary institutins. Evaluatin criteria The selectin cmmittee will cnsider the fllwing: 1. the ptential f the candidate including educatin, training, experience, and academic achievement (n the basis f transcripts, reference letters, publicatins) 2. the ability f the candidate t successfully cmplete the prpsed cntributins t the ILRP research agenda and t wrk cllabratively in multi-disciplinary teams t achieve the ILRP deliverables; 3. the usefulness and quality f the candidate s prpsed cntributin t the ILRP areas f fcus.
