VULCANUS FIRE-RATED FRAMES 12

MANUFACTURING TABLE OF CONTENTS 8 9 10-11 11 12-13 14 Application & Installation Hardware Requirements 20-90-Minute Neutral Pressure and Positive Pressure Anti-Fire Composite Frame Construction Concealed Closer (20 Minute Only) 20-Minute Neutral Pressure and Positive Pressure, Solid Wood Finger Joint Frame Construction 20-90-Minute Neutral Pressure and Positive Pressure Wood Veneered Hollow Metal Drywall Steel Frames The fire rating labels are good for North America. However, Mexico does not necessarily recognize UL10c and it is ultimately up to the authority having jurisdiction where the project is located. 13

VULCANUS FIRE-RATED FRAMES APPLICATION The door frames described in this specification and for 20-45-60 and 90 minute ratings are per UBC 7-2 (1997), for Single Swing and Pair Openings. All Frames are designed to use neutral pressure doors of equal or greater fire-ratings within the openings. Certified intumescents are required on the meeting edge of pairs. All door frames are to be installed in wall systems of equal or greater fire ratings (of the door) per UBC 7-2 (1997) and UL 10C. All rough openings for a 7/8" thick jamb installation should be a minimum 2-1/4" to 3" maximum over nominal width of the door and 1-1/4" minimum to 1-3/4" maximum over nominal height of the door. All rough openings for custom jamb thickness should be a minimum ½" plus twice the jamb thickness plus the width of the door. Door frames constructed as illustrated in these procedures meet the requirements for either neutral (UBC 7-2, 1994 and UL 10B) or positive pressure fire tests, UBC 7-2 (1997) and UL 10C (1998). Door frames labeled for positive pressure applications do not need any additional intumescents between the door and the frame. All that is required is the concealed and (or) recessed intumescent within the existing system. Note: No additional smoke and draft control gasketing or intumescent is required. This is an all-inclusive, self-contained system. INSTALLATION The installation of the frame in the opening is critical to the performance of the product in the test, but simple or minimal variations are acceptable. One of these is the attachment of the frame header to the frame legs. Although our specification and installation instructions indicate a flush joint with the header adjacent (flush) to the top outside edge of the frame leg, other connecting joints have proven not to deter from the performance of the product. Other suitable corner attachments would be where the header is placed inside the frame legs and flush to the top of the frame leg, or where the ends of the header and top of the frame leg are machined for miter or dado joints. The imperative factor is that the header must be secured to the frame leg with screws, either through the header and into the leg, or through the leg and into the header, and there must be a continuous line of intumescent material around the back side of the fame leg and header. 14

HARDWARE While Contact cannot control what hardware the end customer actually installs in the unit, the end user is responsible for verifying that the hardware installed meets or exceeds the fire rating of the opening. All hinge and applicable hardware must be fire rated for use in openings at or above the fire rating of the Frame System being installed in accordance with NFPA 80, Table 2-8.1.1, or have passed testing at or above the fire rating by Intertek Testing Services. Gasketing required for all labeled frames will be supplied by Contact Industries unless specified by the customer. Listed and labeled, Schlegel Thermolin & Sperry Rubber type gasketing is acceptable. Any other listed and labeled compression type, kerf-attached gasketing may also be used. The use of Pemko S88 in place of the kerf applied weather-strip listed above is acceptable on Neutral Pressure only. Substitutes are not allowed. Tectus hinges have not been tested and are not approved in Contact frames. SOSS hinges are approved with limitations listed below: Model 218 and Model 418 SOSS hinges only. 20-minute neutral pressure only. Jamb thickness must be increased by at least ½". Depth of cutouts must not go through jamb entirely. SOSS hinge frames must be 2-5/32" thick not including stop in order to be labeled / rated. 4-0 x 8-0 single maximum. 8-0 x 8-0 pair maximum. Closers of any type that require more than mounting screws to the surface are not approved in Contact frames. Labels can only be applied to machined frame sets. Non Machined FR Frames can only be sold to customers approved with Authorization to Mark through ITS. 15

All frames are designed to use neutral pressure doors of equal or greater fireratings within the openings. All door frames are to be installed in wall systems of equal or greater fire ratings (of the door) per UBC 7-2 (1997) and UL 10C. Door frames constructed as illustrated in these procedures meet the requirements for both neutral and positive pressure fire tests, UBC 7-2 (1997) and UL 10C (1998). Door frames labeled for positive pressure applications require the use of intumescent materials to seal the areas between the frame and the door, and the frame and the wall. Installation instructions will be furnished and shall describe (if any) intumescent materials that are to be field applied at time of installation. VULCANUS FIRE-RATED FRAMES DOOR FRAME CLIP INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Materials: Frame legs Frame header Intumescent material 5-inch angle clips 3-inch angle clips 4-1/2-inch receiver brackets #6 3/4-inch wood screws #12 1-1/4-ich screws #8 2-inch screws STEP 1 Measure the rough opening size and cut the frame pieces to length. STEP 2 Using predrilled holes and #6 3/4-inch flat head wood screws, attach 5-inch angle clips to the hinge-side frame leg. Clips should be attached directly behind each hinge point, parallel to the intumescent strip, with the right angle of the clip flush with the edge of the frame leg. STEP 3 Once the clips are attached, the hinges can be attached. Predrill screw holes, with the predrilled holes penetrating the metal clip on the opposite side of the frame leg. Attach hinges using #12 1-1/4- inch screws. 22

STEP 4 Repeat Steps 2 and 3, on the latch side frame leg, making sure to avoid attaching a clip behind the where the latch strike will be attached. STEP 5 Attach clips to the header in a similar manner NOTE: If header is 36" or shorter, only one set of clips is required. For headers that are longer than 36", use two sets of clips, installed so that the distance between clips is equal to the distance between clips and the ends of the header piece. STEP 6 Using #8 2-inch wood screws, secure the header to the frame legs so that the ends of the header are flush with the outside edges of the frame legs. Predrill holes and use two screws on each end. STEP 7 Slide the loose 3-inch angle clips into the receiver clips on both frame legs and the frame header. 23

VULCANUS FIRE-RATED FRAMES STEP 8 Once the frame is entirely assembled, remove the 3-inch angle clips from the slip brackets. Lift the frame and slide it into the rough opening so that the 5-inch angle clips are flush with the wall. Once the frame is in the opening, level the hinge leg so that it is plumb. Always start with the hinge leg. Check for plumb at each bracket, insert a single 2-inch flat head wood screw to hold the leg in place and move on to the next bracket. STEP 9 Secure the header in the same manner and then move on to the latch-side leg. STEP 10 Plumb the hinge leg using a spacer bar that has been cut to the exact length of the header. Use the spacer bar before securing each angle clip on the latch side. STEP 11 Once the frame is in place and squared in the opening, insert screws in all remaining screw holes of the door-side angle clips. 24

STEP 12 Once the frame is secured to the wall on the door side, insert the 3-inch angle clips into the receiver brackets on the non-door side of the frame. When the clips are flush to the wall, secure them using two-inch flat head wood screws. Now you are ready to hang the door and install perimeter casing. With the door and casing installed, you will have a finished opening with no exposed fasteners. 25
