Company History Curt Joa was born in 1903 in Mannheim, Germany. At age 21, Joa left Germany for the United States. He boarded the S.S. Arabic from Hamburg, Germany and headed for New York where he began his new life in America. Upon arriving to the United States, Mr. Joa s first business was to provide farmers an errand-running service. He started with one truck and quickly expanded to three trucks in one year. He sold the business and was able to put $1,000 into savings. Mr. Joa then became an engineer and designer, and eventually moved his family to Wisconsin before losing his job at the outset of The Great Depression. The Creation of the Curt G. Joa Company Needing to support his family, Mr. Joa began working as a freelance consultant and efficiency engineer in 1930. During this time, Mr. Joa met with the Diana Manufacturing Company to see if he could devise a method to replace the hand operations used to produce sanitary napkins. After presenting his invention to the Diana Company in 1931, he was commissioned to build an entire sanitary napkin machine that incorporated his new ideas. Soon, orders from other companies followed. In 1932, Curt Joa established an engineering consulting company bearing his name. That same year, Mr. Joa applied for his first patent, for an end-fold mechanism for sanitary napkins. Despite the nation s economic woes, Mr. Joa believed that good customer relationships would lead to success for both his organization and his customers. Soon after, the company received its first patent, for a feminine sanitary napkin machine, and hasn t looked back. What began as an opportunity to design an automated process to produce sanitary napkins grew through innovation and expertise to become the standard in quality equipment throughout the world. Over the years, the company has grown and our machines have become more and more complex. Today, in our third generation of family ownership, Curt G. Joa, Inc. still stands for engineering excellence. That s why our customers travel from all over the world to our offices in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, where we design and build machines that solve production problems for customers throughout a variety of industries.
