BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE J. Andre Mouton, a native of Saint Martin Parish, Louisiana, was the son of Joseph Leonard Mouton and Marie Pellerin. He graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1909 and began working in the fields of transportation and trade. He was employed by the Southern Pacific and Illinois Central railroads, the Moore-McCormack Steamship line, 1925-1940, and the New Orleans Dock Board. He was general western agent and later, manager of the mid-continent offices (1941-1959) of the Port of New Orleans. He held offices in the Upper Mississippi Waterways Association, the Commerce Board in New Orleans, and the Young Men's Business Club of New Orleans. He spent his retirement years in Benton, Saline County, Arkansas. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The bulk of the collection consists of invitations, public relations materials, and photographs pertaining to Mouton's speaking engagements and his involvement in clubs and organizations. Subjects covered include the "true story" of Evangeline, Cajun culture and lore, and world trade. Clippings and photographs reflect Mouton's interest in the promotion of the Port of New Orleans, water transportation, foreign trade, and commerce. There is also the Elks Souvenir of Baton Rouge annual for 1901, a scrapbook of newspapers clippings on farming and Hurricane Ranch in East Baton Rouge Parish (1939-1946), and a typed literary manuscript by Cora C. Dancy on the history and farm life at Hurricane Ranch that was submitted for the Thomas Jefferson Southern Award (1943). Manuscript contains related photographs. Photographs depict the Louisiana governor Sam Jones and his promotion of the Port of New Orleans, Dudley J. LeBlanc and Acadian girls, foreign delegations at world trade functions, and a slave cabin in Saint Martin Parish. Diaries (1959-1972), some written in Saline County, Arkansas, discuss gardening, participation in church and recreational functions, speaking engagements, family news, and the weather.
