Welcome to the Snowdogs Discover Ashford pawfect sculpture trail! We are inviting everyone to be #bestinsnow As we head into Autumn 2018, people will start to kick up leaves along the Discovery Trail, as the Snowdogs arrive in Ashford. Snowdog sculptures will be popping up throughout the borough, decorated by talented local and national artists with the support of philanthropic local businesses. Get on board and submit your designs for the chance to take part in this spectacular art installation! The finished sculptures will be displayed at key locations through the streets, parks and public areas for up to 10 weeks all through September and November 2018. Each Snowdog will then be auctioned by Pilgrims Hospices and will raise significant funds to support specialist end of life care for local people. Themed on The Snowman and The Snowdog, the animated sequel to Raymond Briggs classic story, The Snowman. This magical event will boost our local economy, inspire civic pride across the generations and showcase the borough s best assets that we have to offer. It will also provide a unique opportunity for artists and creative people throughout the region to be part of something truly amazing. We invite you and your imagination to join us and play a vitally important role in the trail. Why get involved? This event promotes the importance of creativity and it s immense social, cultural and economic value. Snowdogs Discover Ashford is a unique opportunity to get involved in a public art event that is set to inspire people throughout the region. Become part of the trail, where your work will be showcased to a mass audience, enabling you to connect with other artists, businesses and the community on a spectacular level.

How it all works Businesses, attractions, schools and community groups will have the chance to sponsor a Snowdog sculpture your canvas. Your Snowdog designs will be exhibited to our sponsors and selected artists will be commissioned to customise a Snowdog each. If your design is chosen by a sponsor to appear in the trail, we will pay you a fee of 800 (including materials). You will be acknowledged as the artist on a plaque attached to the base of the sculpture and in the official sculpture map and website. These will be displayed in the streets and public spaces of Ashford throughout Autumn 2018 for everyone in the town to enjoy. After the trail, the Snowdogs will take centre stage at a charity auction to raise funds for Pilgrims Hospices, before they go to their forever homes. Should your design be commissioned, you will be invited to attend the auction event to see first-hand how your sculpture can raise funds to support Ashford s local hospice, Pilgrims. How to be #bestinsnow We d love to see a rich mix of designs from cutting edge, contemporary and traditional artists that will inspire audiences and creates a spectacular trail, so let your imagination run wild! Working with Pilgrims Hospices gave us paws for thought about love, life and loss. So whether you love Ashford, love life or if you just love the Snowdog help us create a trail that celebrates wellbeing and the therapeutic value of the arts! How to apply Complete the submission form and submit with your Snowdog design via Podio https://podio.com/ webforms/20185744/1374248. Key dates for artists The closing date for submissions is midnight on Friday 6 April 2018 We will let you know if your design has been shortlisted in late April 2018 We will let you know if a sponsor has chosen your design in mid-may 2018 Successful applicants will transfer their design onto the Snowdog sculpture during June and July 2018 The Snowdog trail will be exhibited between September and November 2018 The charity auction will take place at the beginning of December 2018

TOP DOG TIPS 1 2 3 4 5 6 The Snowdog sculpture is a three-dimensional blank canvas, enabling artists to create their own unique work of art on a brilliant and versatile form. They are manufactured using a mixture of Class II fire retardant laminating resin and chopped roving fibreglass over an initial brushed-on layer of polyester gel coat. Each Snowdog is finished with a primer and is ready to paint. Approx Sculpture dimensions: Height 153cm, Length 173cm, and Width 76cm. Snowdogs Discover Ashford is an interactive event, so the public will repeatedly touch your sculpture. Artists may attach items to the sculpture; however, unless secured robustly, add-ons may be removed or damaged. While we welcome all art forms, collage and/or sticking paper or paper-based products on to the sculpture does not prove as effective as painting or mosaics. Art materials are not provided. The use of acrylic paints is recommended although artificial resin paint or two-component paint can also be used. To complete your sculpture, it must be finished with a waterproof non-yellowing varnish, provided by us. Artists will not be responsible for placing their sculpture on the streets or collecting them at the end of the event. We do, however, ask artists to be available during and after the event for any touch-up work that may be required. If the artist is unavailable another artist will carry out this work. 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 You may submit up to three designs but please be aware that no more than one can be commissioned by a single artist. If your design is chosen, we will ask you to sign our standard copyright agreement. When planning your designs, please bear in mind that they should be appropriate for public display to a mass audience. Designs that are overtly religious, political or sexual in nature will not be accepted. Additionally, neither corporate logos nor advertising is allowed. Artists may alter the basic sculpture shape but if doing so, must ensure the finished work remains structurally intact. It is recommended that only artists experienced in working with fibreglass submit designs that use this process. Artists are requested to keep the dogs feet area clear of any attachments, so as not to interfere with fixing to the base. A painting space will be provided in Ashford for artists to create their Snowdog. Should artists wish to work on their sculpture in their own studio, they will be responsible for collecting and returning it safely and securely to the painting space. Please note that any designs we feel aren t appropriate for a mass audience, or won t survive the trail will not be included in the exhibition to sponsors (to avoid any upset or unfortunate trips to the vet!). Any questions? If you wish to speak to the team about your submission, please call Artist Manager Bec Britain on 07817 325 713 or email snowdogs@ashford.gov.uk
