As part of their contribution to the knowledge exchange on Brazil s role in the world economy, Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) and the Brazilian- American Chamber of Commerce invite you to the seventh edition of World Economy and Brazil, a breakfast meeting with Mr. Alejandro Werner, Director of the Western Hemisphere Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). THE EVENT This event is organized by FGV Projetos, the technical advisory unit of FGV and by the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce, with the media partnership of Financial Times. Dr. Cesar Cunha Campos, Director of FGV Projetos, will open the event, followed by Dr. Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal, President of FGV, who will talk about Geopolitics in the Brazilian context. Next, Mayor of São Paulo, Bruno Covas, will explain the dynamics of Doing Business in São Paulo. Mr. Alejandro Werner, Director of the Western Hemisphere Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), will present an Overview of the World Economy with emphasis in Latin America. Professor Carlos Geraldo Langoni, Director of World Economy Center of FGV, Senior Advisor of FGV Projetos and Former President of the Central Bank of Brazil, will address the Economic Scenarios of Brazil. CARLOS IVAN SIMONSEN LEAL SPEAKERS Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal holds a degree in Civil Engineering from the School of Engineering of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), a master s in Mathematical Economics from the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) of the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), and PhD in Economics from Princeton University, USA. He was a professor at FGV s EPGE Brazilian School of Economics and Finance (FGV EPGE), in Rio de Janeiro, from 1986 to 1997, director of FGV-Business from 1992 to 1997, general director of EPGE from 1994 to 1997, and vice-president of FGV from 1997 to 2000. He is currently the president of Fundação Getulio Vargas and also a member of several boards of directors. CESAR CUNHA CAMPOS Cesar Cunha Campos has a degree in civil engineering from Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), a master s in business administration from London Business School and a PhD in transportation planning from Technische Universität Wien, Austria. He has been an adviser since 1975, heading and integrating several projects in economics, engineering and finance. Campos has also developed projects for top Brazilian private and public corporations, especially feasibility studies for raising funds with major banks and development agencies (such as BNDES, IRDB, IDB and OECD) and undertook a number of international projects. Since 2003 he is the director of FGV Projetos, the technical advisory unit of Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), one of the top Think Tanks worldwide, with offices in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. He leads a team of approximately 500 specialists working at home and abroad in various areas of knowledge, such as economy and finance, administration and public policy.
ALEJANDRO WERNER SPEAKERS Alejandro Werner assumed his current position as Director of the Western Hemisphere Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in January 2013. A Mexican citizen, Mr. Werner has had distinguished careers in the public and private sectors as well as in academia. He served as Undersecretary of Finance and Public Credit of Mexico (December 2006 August 2010) and Head of Corporate and Investment Banking at BBVA-Bancomer (August 2011 until end-2012). Previously, he was Director of Economic Studies at the Bank of Mexico and Professor at ITAM, Instituto de Empresa, and Yale University. He has published widely. Mr. Werner was named Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2007. Mr. Werner received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1994. CARLOS GERALDO LANGONI Carlos Geraldo Langoni holds a PhD. in economics from the University of Chicago. He was the youngest president in the history of the Brazilian Central Bank, and is currently CEO and a partner of Projeta Consultoria Econômica, which provides strategic advice to major corporations and publishes the weekly Brazil Memo (brazilmemo.com) an English summary on key aspects of the Brazilian Economy. Professor Langoni also serves as Director of the World Economy Center of FGV and as a senior advisor to FGV Projetos.
FGV PROJETOS FGV Projetos is the Fundação Getulio Vargas technical advisory unit in charge of using the academic knowledge generated and assembled at its schools and institutes. Their representatives provide high-level advisory services to public, private and third-sector institutions in Brazil and abroad, developing projects in different areas such as economics and finance, management and administration, and public policy.
