President s Message 2017 Daphne Schroth President s Message Happy New Year Dixie Watercolor Artists! I hope you are looking forward to all of the exciting events scheduled for the Dixie Watercolor Society in 2017. There is something for everyone whether you are a budding watercolorist just beginning to put the paint on the paper or an experienced professional in the field. The DWS events in 2017 include monthly meetings/presentations/demos the last Thursday of every month (excluding June, July and August) at the Electric Theater. Also, there are a myriad of workshops, two show and competitions, critique groups, Plein Air painting experiences and the quarterly exhibits at Gallery 35. Watch for the DWS newsletter, via email, published and edited by Deena Millecam, three times a year for all of the up and coming events. Check out our Facebook Page or our website (dixiewatercolorsociety.com) to keep current with all of our activities. There truly is something for everyone! A few of the highlights for the next three months include: DWS monthly meetings/program/demos, January 26, February 23 and March 30, 5:00 PM at the Arrowhead Gallery. A new quarterly exhibit at Gallery 35 beginning February 3, 2017 The DWS Spring Show and Competition, February 12-25, 2017, at Gallery 35 DWS Spring Show Awards and Reception, February 18, 2017 at Gallery 35, 5:30PM Ian Ramsey Workshop, February 16-17 at the Arrowhead Gallery Mel Scott, Featured Artist Reception during Georgefest, Gallery 35, March 3, 5:30-7:00PM.

I want to share the vision and mission statements created by the DWS Board. These statements drive the activities and events of the Dixie Watercolor Society. Vision: Sustaining and promoting the joy of transparent watercolor Mission: Dedicated to promote, encourage, and advance transparent watercolors through various activities for the benefit of the members and the general public The nine member DWS Board meet monthly and each board member has an assigned responsibility which includes management of Gallery 35, monthly meeting programs, workshops, membership, communication, finances, show and competitions, secretarial duties, community education, awareness and involvement. In addition to the board, other DWS members volunteer to host critique groups, plan Plein Air events, publish the newsletter and all of the member volunteers who staff Gallery 35. Be sure to thank all of your board members and committee members for their service in 2016 and for the year ahead in 2017. Activities to Enjoy With DWS Monthly Critique Groups A group of artists review each others artwork. This is done in a constructive manner to help the artist improve, and also serves as a teaching tool where everyone in the group can benefit. DWS is very proud of its critique groups and this program is one of the cornerstones of our educational program. The 2016/2017 critique groups are being held monthly at the following times: First Tuesday of the Month: Annie's group (contact Annie at ab6235dk@gmail.com) Second Saturday of the Month: Lola's group (contact Michelle at manriquez.wc@gmail.com) Come join and be part of this learning experience and share your artwork with friends. DWS Membership Meeting Thursday, January 26, 5:00pm Arrowhead Gallery meeting 5:00 to 5:15 p.m. social 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. meeting. Sean Rowley, manager of Gallery 35, will give us a presentation of his cleverly constructed plein air painting palette and his preparations for painting outside along with a short demo. Gallery 35 Rotation: Monday, January 30, 10:30 am Drop off new artwork for Gallery 35 exhibit at 10:30 am for the next three month display in the lobby of Gallery 35. Please bring your art, read all the rules carefully and bring your calendars for sitting times. You need to sign up to sit in order to be in the Gallery. Follow the guidelines of the cut-off date and the rules of the Gallery. (This is not only for Gallery 35 but for our Spring Show as well. Be sure to read and know the rules of the show so there is no misunderstandings and problems. We are a professional gallery and want to keep it professional) Bring your money for your three months rent and your calendars for signing up to sit. Georgefest Feb. 3 rd downtown in the evening. We will be having a ticket giveaway for a free art piece during our DWS show which should bring in lots of people for our semi-annual Spring Show. Join us if you would like to be involved

DWS Spring Show Just Add Water Ian Ramsey Workshop February 16-17 DWS Spring Show is coming up fast. Paint something wonderful for the theme Just Add Water. February 13 th through the 27 th at Gallery 35. Drop off the 13 th at Gallery 35 10:30-12:00 Judged by Ian Ramsey who will be in St. George for a workshop. Get painting. OUR TWO SHOWS IN THE FALL AND IN THE SPRING ARE THE SHOWS THAT GIVE US POINTS TO BECOME SIGNATURE MEMBERS. WE APPRECIATE ALL OF YOU WHO ARE WILLING TO SHARE YOUR TALENTS AND JOIN US IN THESE SHOWS. WE COULD NOT DO IT WITHOUT YOU! THANKS FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION AND FOR YOUR ENTHUSIASM IN SHOWING YOUR ART. WE LOVE OUR ARTIST FRIENDS. Ian Ramsay was born in Farnborough, Kent, England. He spent his early years in Britain and Canada, and eventually settled in the United States. He received a degree in architecture at the University of Utah and is a licensed architect. In 1979, Ian left architecture to become a full time watercolor artist. Since that time he has traveled and painted extensively. His work has been exhibited all over the US, Japan, and Britain. Ian has participated in many juried, invitational and one man shows throughout the US and Japan. He has been an instructor at the Salt Lake Art Center and has done numerous demonstrations and painting workshops. Ian and his wife Carol have been residents of the Salt Lake Valley in Utah for the last 35 years. His work can be seen at the Brushworks Gallery in Salt Lake City, Utah; New Masters Gallery in Carmel, California; Trails West Gallery in Ketchum, Idaho; Settlers West Gallery in Tucson, Arizona; Trailside Galleries in Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Trailside Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona, and through Image Source of Bovingdon England.

This month s Plein Air Paint Out was held Wednesday, December 14 th at Snow Canyon State Park. The weather was beautiful and of course, the scenery was spectacular. Come paint with us! Paint Out Schedule is: January Silver Reef Museum- Leeds In conjunction with Arts to Zion 10-3:30. Karen March Featured Artist Gallery 35 DWS ACTIVITIES Recap Words from Karen: So happy to share my expressions of happiness through my watercolors. The Sears/ Dixie Invitational this Spring was such a highlight! I was a Professional Interior Designer out of Salt Lake City and Las Vegas for 27 years. I retired in 1988. I ran away from home to pursue a career as an artist. It has been a wonderful adventure. DWS November Meeting Alicia Finlayson was the guest artist at the November Dixie Watercolor Society Meeting. Not the one she did but what an inspiring artist!)

Member News Condolences to the Juanita Becker Family Juanita Becker passed away December 28, 2016. Juanita was a long time member of SUAG and was on the SUAG Board. She was a member of the Arrowhead Gallery and participated in the SUAG shows in the Red Cliff Gallery and was volunteer for the many shows at Red Cliff. Juanita was also a member of the Dixie Water Color Society. She was a good artist and a willing volunteer for many arts projects. She always kept us on our toes. She will be missed by all of us. Grapes Anyone? Karen Bettilyon Workshop DWS Our own super talented, signature member, Karen Bettilyon will be teaching a workshop on making grapes using only three paint colors by blowing and using your fingers. She has modified how she was taught by Lian Quan Zhen for this fast, easy, and fun way to paint. The workshop will be April 22, 2017 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Arrowhead Gallery.
