Judy Mudd s Mini Portrait Workshop KWS FALL GENERAL MEETING: October 11, 2014, 2pm at the KWS Gallery AquaVenture 2014 Twenty-three artists submitted 50 works of art for the AquaVenture 2014 exhibition. Chair, Trudi Bellou, qualified all 50 pieces and entered them into the competition. This year s Juror, Gabrielle Mayer, then had the difficult task of selecting only 24 pieces to be exhibited, the maximum allowed this year due to the size of the Patio Gallery at JCC. We are excited to announce that 18 artists will be included in AquaVenture 2014. Framed artwork is due in the Patio Gallery on July 17 after which Gabrielle Mayer will complete her adjudication for the following awards: First Prize ($300), Second Prize ($200), Third Prize ($100), Honorable Mention ($25 each). The Award Reception is Sunday, July 20, 2 4 pm in the Patio Gallery, Jewish Community Center 3600 Dutchmans Lane, Louisville, KY 40205. Juror, Gabrielle Mayer is a realist painter and associate professor at University of Louisville. Highlights of her exhibitions include Global Perspectives on America s Heartland at the Yeiser Art Center, Paducah, Kentucky, 2013, Florida Contemporary at the Naples Art Museum, 2009, and the 2008 Contemporary Realism Biennial at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. A recipient of the Kentucky Arts Council s Al Smith Fellowship, 2007, Ms. Mayer has been a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome and artist-in-residence at the Blue Mountain Center in New York, the Paducah Arts Alliance, the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming, and the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, New Mexico. AquaVenture, KWS s annual, water-based media exhibit, is open July 20-August 26. The Patio Gallery is located in the lobby of the Jewish Community Center, 3600 Dutchmans Lane Gallery hours...sunday: 9am-6pm, Monday Thursday: 8:30am-9pm, Friday: 8:30am-7pm, Closed Saturday Heartfelt thanks to Trudi Bellou, AquaVenture 2014 Chairperson, for all her hard work, and to all KWS members who entered the show, as well as two non-kws members who entered this year. We are looking forward to this exciting, annual exhibit, and the increased attention and visibility it will receive in this very professional gallery. Please join us at the Award Reception Sunday, July 20, 2 4pm, and encourage everyone you know to see the exhibit before it closes August 26th. WE DON T KNOW WHO THE WINNERS OF AQUAVENTURE 2014 ARE... We ve reduced the cost of her remaining paintings by 25% and the sale price of her remaining donated books has been reduced by 50%. These are extraordinary prices. This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire some great artwork from an extraordinary artist, teacher and woman. Her books and artwork will be in the KWS Gallery in Brownsboro Center a few more weeks until gone. First come, first served! The KWS Gallery members exhibiting in the 4 Seasons Store exchanged their paintings during the first week in July. Emphasis will also be placed on expressing yourself in an artistic and uninhibited manner. The introduced painting approaches and concepts will enlighten both the traditional and contemporary watercolor artists. Li s watercolors have won many national awards including the first place artist award in the Kentucky Watercolor Society s Aqueous USA 2012 & the Kentucky Artist Award in Aqueous USA 2013. We are honored to have Li lead a portrait workshop for KWS. About the Workshop: The objectives of the workshop will include constructing the figure, glazing techniques, mixing skin color, and using textures as a visual vocabulary. Frank Francese Watercolor Workshop July 27-30, 2015 Frank Francese is a well- known watercolor artist and instructor. His liquid style is unique and distinctive. Frank enjoys working on a very wet surface, letting the pure color mix itself on the paper. His shapes are large and loose, often disregarding fine detail. Frank uses abrupt color changes of the same value with the white of the watercolor paper to bring his paintings to life. The subject matter for Francese watercolors is always varied, reflecting his national and international travels. About the Workshop: During our 4 day workshop Frank will demonstrate two times per day with plenty of time for working on the concepts presented. Day 1 will include nature scenes. The goal is for students to learn to apply the paint freely on the page and to start to understand how to use the white of the paper. Day 2 we will paint rustic scenes placing manmade structures in the natural landscape. The concepts of light source and shadowing will be introduced. City scenes are the focus of Day 3. Learning what to include in your painting and what to leave out is stressed here. On Day 4 we will paint beach scenes - boats and buildings in the tropics, the confusion of a harbor scene with fishing boats, working people or the quiet sea villages in any part of the world. Visit frank s website at francese.com to see more about him and his beautiful paintings. WHEN: September 28-October 1, 2015 Prior to Sept 1: KWS members, $394.00 Non-members, $420.00 After Sept 1: Add $25.00 Robert Burridge Put the Wow Back in Watermedia September 28-October 1, 2015 Robert Burridge is a full-time contemporary painter and teaches combined media, collage and painting throughout France, Italy, Mexico, Central America, as well as the USA. His workshops have historically changed artists lives forever. About the Workshop: This powerful painting course will cover the latest in avant-garde water media materials and techniques that Bob is currently doing. The new Burridge bright and vibrant color Wheel and Design Composition principles are emphasized. You will learn how to create with higher intentions and personal stuff. Be ready to create a huge frenzy of painting on paper or watercolor canvasses with a variety of subject matters. Watercolor varnish techniques are included. DONATIONS TO KWS Several members have generously offered to donate some art supplies and frames to KWS. We think this provides a great opportunity to save on our increasingly expensive framing and supply costs. Our Board has decided to bring this opportunity to our members twice a year at our General Meetings. Each artist who donates should bring the items to our Fall Meeting and take home that day any leftover supplies. Everyone loves "freebies" and as artists you can feel better about an uncluttered studio knowing your art buddies will benefit. To keep this as an ongoing project clutters our new gallery and becomes a burden on the workshop people, etc. who have to find a place to put them. Anyone interested in selling their items should contact Rebecca for an add in our newsletter. Start cleaning now and you'll be ready for our fall meeting! We still have some of Aline Barker's paintings left. Come by the gallery and get a piece of her great creative mind and wisdom that we all love.!
