RFID ANTENNAS FROM HUBER+SUHNER Innovative technology of the future Radio Frequency Identification Systems allowing wireless identification of people and goods via radio frequency engineering is the technology of the future and offers the following benefits: reduced cost through fine-tuning of processes higher efficiency in production, inventory management and logistics greater convenience for employees and end users better reliability Reader antenna smart chip (transponder) An RF identification system consists of a RFID reader, an antenna and a tag (the tag includes a chip which is attached to an antenna). The reader generates an electromagnetic field that activates the chip, enabling the chip s data to be read and aligned with the logistics-software. Passive transponders which don t have an own power supply are applied for product identification, short distance product tracking, automation, library management, ticketing, access control and animal identification. Active transponders which have an own power supply are used for container identification and long distance product tracking. Innovation in a rapidly growing market HUBER+SUHNER is ready Producers and traders are working closely together to fine-tune and standardise the technologies used within the RFID industry. In this field, HUBER+SUHNER is making a crucial contribution with its capacity as an antenna manufacturer in providing a wide range of high-grade rugged products and extensive know-how. HUBER+SUHNER has focused their strengths on UHF RFID in the 869 MHz range (Europe), the 928 MHz range (USA) as well as the 2.4 GHz range (global). Pure advantages RFID antenna solutions from HUBER+SUHNER: outstanding price-to-performance ratio matured solutions for RFID and WLAN, etc. aesthetic design easy installation on dock-doors, forklifts, conveyer belts, lifting platforms, elevators and on robots wide selection of products customised solutions one stop shopping HUBER+SUHNER offers complete antenna solutions for their customer s application including cables and connectors. RFID ANTENNAS Systems Monostatic systems use single antennas for the receiving and transmitting paths. The circulator within the reader switches the direction of the path between several antennas. Bistatic systems use separate receiving and transmitting paths and therefore require two antennas: either two single antennas or one dual antenna. polarisation vector Antennas Two basic types of antennas exist for RFID systems: single and dual antennas. Dual antennas are two independent antennas incorporated within a single housing. Here the antennas must be electrically isolated from each other to ensure that the transmitted signal does not interfere with the other antenna port. Antenna parameters Frequencies Low 125 134 khz (not supported by H+S) VHF 13.56 MHz (not supported by H+S) UHF 430 MHz,860 950 MHz and 2.4 GHz VSWR VSWR (Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) and RL (Return Loss) are measures of the amount of energy that travels through the cable towards the antenna is reflected at the antenna entrance back to the signal source (transmitter). A poor VSWR may cause interference or noise. In a system, reflected power from an antenna or a poor connection may damage the reader. The term polarisation refers to the property of a radiated electromagnetic wave described by the timedependent direction and magnitude of the electric field vector, i.e. the figure traced as a function of time by the extremity of the vector of a fixed point in space. a) linear polarisation b) circular polarisation electric field vector c) linear polarisation vs. time component polarisation vector direction of propagation component d) circular polarisation vs. time direction of propagation HUBER+SUHNER 5

RFID ANTENNAS Differences in polarisation may cause losses in the link budget. The table below shows the signal strength and the losses. If the polarisation of linear transponders or tags is defined and always oriented in the same direction, it makes sense to use the same polarisation on the reader antenna. If the direction is not defined or unknown, the losses will be from 3dB up to the point where no signal is received. RFID ANTENNAS Antenna gain is a measure of the amount of energy which is oriented in a particular direction. Generally, when gain is mentioned this refers to the maximum gain. Maximum gain is taken from the main beam and is specified on the datasheet. For isotropic radiators gain is always referred to as dbi (i = isotropic). For dipole antennas the gain is always referred to as dbd. HUBER+SUHNER generally refer to gain as dbi when specifying their antennas. The conversion between the two references is as follows: [dbi] 2.15 db = [dbd] Beamwidth: On the antenna datasheets two beamwidths are specified: the (elevation) and the (azimuth). Vertical polarisation = perpendicular to the earth s surface, and polarisation = parallel to the earth s surface. The beamwidth of an antenna is the angle at which the radiated power decreases by 3 db, which is equal to half the power in the maximum direction of the main beam. 120 90 60 A single-patch antenna has a fairly wide beamwidth in the range of 70 to 80. It is inherently a directive radiator, with a typical gain of approx. 8 dbi. Some special applications such as RFID portals require narrower beamwidths to reduce the number of unwanted successful tag readings in the neighbourhood of the portal. 180 150-150 30-20 -10-6 -3 0 0-30 3 db beam width -120-90 -60 Fork lift equipped with RFID antennas HUBER+SUHNER 7

RFID ANTENNAS The front to back ratio is the difference in db between the major lobe (main beam) and the back lobe. The axial ratio is specified for circular polarised antennas. It is the ratio of the major to the minor axes of the polarisation ellipse and is specified in db. major axis minor axis = 1 major axis minor axis = 2 major axis minor axis = 4 major axis major axis major axis minor axis minor axis minor axis Isolation Isolation is only specified for dual-polarised antennas. A dual-polarised antenna has two antennas integrated within a single housing which have orthogonal polarisations. The isolation value specifies how much of a signal fed into one port is reflected into the second port. port 1 port 2 signal in isolation signal out Isolation measurement 8 HUBER+SUHNER
