ANNOUNCEMENTS Eve Ward: I received this announcement: The NY District K-Kids Committee congratulates District K-Kids winners. For single service, 1 st Place goes to the West Sand Lake K-Kids for collecting the most socks for the homeless. WSL is the only upstate K-Kids club to win a first prize! I am very proud of our great kids! Thanks to those who worked on Friday s Red Cross Blood Drive. 26 units were collected! PRESENTATION President Stu awarded Joe Trupia his pin tab for 34 years of perfect attendance! PROGRAM Averill Park School District Superintendent and Kiwanian Jim Hoffman presented his annual proposed budget for 2016-2017, illustrated with slides. {A promised email failed to appear, so this report is from a flawed memory! Ed.} Jim began by announcing that for the second year in a row there would be an increase in the budget and that we would not have to reduce either staff or programs! Salaries have been raised, and the district has benefitted by shared classes, i.e., certain AP teachers classes are videoed in real time to other schools that do not have a qualified teacher in that particular subject, and they reimburse AP per number of students watching. Technology! AP now has about 2800 students, compared to 3600 in 2008/09, with 275 graduating. Additional expenses to be voted upon are in the Transportation Dept: purchase of 8 new buses (6 large & 2 small), plus 1 dump truck/plow. Jim answered many questions from the members, including our reputation in the press for being riddled with heroin users. That is a community problem, not a school problem. The users are in their 20s, and are not students, and it stems from becoming hooked from prescription drugs which are expensive, as opposed to street heroin which is relatively cheap. Each household will receive printed information in the mail, so that they can be well informed before the election on May 10 th. Be sure to VOTE! HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Bob Pasquarelli: There will be a Drug Take Back Day this Saturday at the WSL Fire House from 10 AM to 2 PM. Clean out your medicine cabinets of those expired and no longer needed prescriptions, so there will be no temptation for illicit users! $ Bruce Perry: We had a great vacation on Bimini Island, FL wonderful place! $ Jim Hoffman: AP received the highest safety award from NYS DOT 98% of our buses passed inspection! On a personal note, my wife, who works in Manhattan, will be retiring next month, and we will no longer have to pay for that expensive apartment! $ Jerry Tysiak: Our youngest daughter is home for a week with Mom, while her husband is preparing to lecture at Roswell Park Cancer Institute! Our gain! Also thanks to Jim for a good budget presentation great job! $ Jim Rogers: I m happy to see that a member I sponsored in 2009 is still contributing much, especially with the Key Club! Great work, John Mullligan! $ Joe Behson: We had another great concert Saturday night from the Dissipated Eight in the new auditorium at APHS. There was a good crowd in attendance including 11 SLKs! $ Pete Stevens: My daughter has been accepted at Albany Medical College! And here s to the 100 th anniversary of the Irish Rebellion! $ Barb Fioravanti: We just spent the first week in our new island summer cottage in Lake Winnipesaukee, NH! The weather was great while we were there, but I saw that the forecast for tomorrow was for 1-2 inches of snow! $ Bill Whipple: While driving locally, I spotted a bald eagle in a tree along Eastern Union Turnpike! $ Pat Lane: I survived 5 days with Florine! Not a happy week. Slept all weekend to make up for it! $ Jean Hamlin: Got another story for you. Lena and Ole got divorced. The judge said, I m going to give Lena $700 a month. To which Ole replied, That s nice of you, and I ll try to help out a little, too! $ Stuart Nippes: I thank Janet for giving me a real estate tip which paid off. I m giving 5% of my commission to Eliminate, and 5% to the Club! DOOR PRIZE, provided by Jim Hoffman, was won by Jerry Tysiak! And another door prize, a Valley Cats baseball cap donated by Eve Ward, was won by Jim Colabelli! 50/50 for $21 was won by Pres Stu who donated it to the MS Walk! PROGRESSIVE 50/50, worth $329.50 this week, will keep growing. Jim Rogers had the lucky ticket, but he could only find the 6 of Diamonds from the 36 remaining cards!
