Volunteer Guide - FLASH Cards Mitigation for High Wind Events Wood Construction Connectors Card Reference Developed by the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) 1427 E. Piedmont Dr., Suite 2, Tallahassee, FL 32308 www.flash.org (877) 221-SAFE (7233)

Introduction This section features Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc., wood construction connectors, type H/TSP. These connectors are rated for seismic and hurricane conditions. Reference catalogue F-C22011ADD, 2012 Addendum, Wood Construction Connectors. Type MTS connectors are also rated for hurricane conditions, refer to Technical Bulletin TFLCODE11, Connectors for Florida Hurricane Mitigation Retrofit when reroofing. All nails are listed in Appendix A. All illustrations are provided courtesy of Simpson Strong-Tie. The data provided within is for reference only and not intended to replace or substitute controlled engineering design data. Volunteer group members should always consult with the project coordinator/leader when questions arise or when further explanation is required.

Hurricane Tie Selection Hurricane tie connector selection is based on several factors made by design professionals. Final selection of the type of connector installed is based on performance, application, installed cost, and ease of installation.

Flash Tip No. 1 AVOID A MISINSTALLATION do not make new holes or overdrive nails Picture #1: Correct Picture #2: Incorrect Picture #3: Incorrect

Flash Tip No. 2 The shape of the hole round, oval, or triangular provides important information about what to do with that hole. Round Hole (Required) Always fill a round hole with the specified fastener nail, screw, or bolt. Oval Hole (Required) Treat oval holes like round holes. Always fill them with the specified fastener. (No exceptions!) Triangular Hole (Optional) Every job is unique. Do not fill triangular holes unless specified by the Construction Manager.

Flash Tip No. 3 All connectors have been designed to use a specific fastener. The specific quantity, type and size of nails or screws must be used. Refer to the chart to ensure the correct nail is used.

Type H1 Connector H1 connectors can be installed with flanges inward, (reverse from image 1 below). Step 1: Nail four (4) 8d nails into the plates (F1) Step 2: Nail six (6) 8d x 1½" into the rafter (F2)

Type H2 Connector F2 H2A and H2ASS (constructed from stainless steel) are installed as shown. See Appendix-A for stainless steel required nails.
