Dayton Carvers Guild November 2013 www.daytoncarvers.com Mr. Stearns, here, creates a masterwork newsletter of scriptural exegesis and a marvel of patient logic, slicing and dicing with chip carve precision the very idea that bird carving could be a more sophisticated art than chip carving. Please contribute your news to him at (937) 837-0728 or lstearns@erinet.com. November Meeting: The Golden Ratio by Marshall Stearns The golden ratio gives esthetically pleasing proportions to everything we see. It s how you proportion things in your art to make it look right. I like to take things apart to see what s inside them and this is what we will do with the golden ratio at the November meeting. I will give you some common sense info useful for your carving and then take you to a world you never knew existed. The golden ratio is the hidden geometry underlying the physical world and the esthetic world. You can find it in great art, buildings, plants, animals, viruses and the heavenly bodies. In some ancient societies, geometry and numbers were sacred. Numbers were not just for counting. The greats of those times studied numbers and figures as unique individuals. In our world, the golden ratio is fundamental to art, architecture and music. That includes your carvings. Al Wurstner Carver of the Month You saw Al s bio in the September newsletter. He was scheduled for September, then re-scheduled. We get to hear Al s story at our November meeting. Artistry in Wood Report This newsletter gets released just prior to Artistry in Wood so you will have to get the low down at the November meeting. In December No meeting because of Christmas. No newsletter because of no meeting. Yes, the monthly luncheon at Marion s will be on as usual. In December it s Wednesday, the 4 th. We had an unusual surge in ornaments this year so we beat by far what was a stretch goal. So, what will Jim set for the goal next year? It can t be less than this year s record. But, if it s more than our 2013 record, then we probably won t meet it. At the October meeting we had 158 ornaments. There will likely be some more by the time of Artistry in Wood. Here are the prize winners. First place $20 - Ray Kunz Second place $15 - Don Mertz Third place $10 - Ronnie Stewart 4-way tie for Fourth place - $4 each Bruce Henn Mary Rose McCrate Don Stephenson Lenard Watts Dennis Grant picked an ornament as The URS Choice. It came from Don Stephenson. is like watching Yosemite Sam toss a lighted match into a shed full of dynamite. You know how it s going to end. Marion s Piazza was named to The No. 1 Spot in Pizza Today Magazine s Hot 100 list of independent pizzerias. The magazine uses gross sales as its criteria, measuring all pizzerias with nine or fewer restaurants in the independent category. Marion s has nine stores. This came from The Dayton Daily News. 2

Chip Carving Workshop XVII with Wayne Barton, The Ultimate Project Class For 2013 Wayne Barton may have created The Ultimate Chip Carving Project. This year s project is a butternut table lamp. It is beautifully constructed by Master Craftsman Gottlieb Brandli. The lamp stands 14 tall with a base and top measuring 7 square. The rectangular panels of the post are each 5 ½ wide by 11 tall. It easily separates into three pieces, base, post and top for ease of carving. Wayne currently has ten different patterns available for this project. The project includes all hardware necessary to complete the lamp including an 8 cord. The only things you will need to add are the bulb and shade. This is a three-day workshop for carvers who have at least dabbled in the art of chip carving and want to increase their skill level. Wayne Barton is the author of numerous books on the subject of chip carving and is internationally recognized for his contributions to the art form. Most importantly, he is an excellent teacher with a unique ability to relate to his students and impart knowledge to them, regardless of their skill level or rate of learning. Class size will be small to provide ample individual attention to each carver. Cost of the project is $97. The fee for the three day workshop is $225. The workshop will be on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 6, 7 and 8, 2013. Classes will run from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM. Lunch will be provided all days. The workshop will be at Nicholas Woodcarving just outside of St. Paris, Ohio. Call Bruce or Judy Nicholas at (937) 857-9700 to get an application form. Reservations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Wayne Barton, Bruce and Judy Nicholas will be at Artistry in Wood. Butch Clark Class at Belchers Butch Clark will teach carving a hummingbird on a flower sometime in January or February. If you would like to be on the list, give your name to Belchers (937) 845-0346. They will give you more details when they become available. Sell Your Art at Etsy At the September meeting, Robert Leach said Etsy should provide a great way to sell you carvings. Their website address is http://www.etsy.com. Below is some information from that website. What can I sell on Etsy? Etsy provides a marketplace for crafters, artists and collectors to sell their handmade creations, vintage goods (at least 20 years old), and both handmade and non-handmade ("commercial") crafting supplies. How do fees work on Etsy? Joining and setting up a shop on Etsy is free. Each item listing on Etsy costs $0.20 USD when the listing is published. A listing lasts for four months or until the item is sold. Once a sale occurs, Etsy assess a 3.5% transaction fee on the item s sale price. You have an opportunity to review and accept the fees that you will be charged prior to publishing a listing. 4
