The way unit has potentiometers, the -way unit has and the -way unit has potentiometers. Tighten the nuts well. One DPDT switch mounts in the position marked sum. Figure Mounting of the circuit boards. The preamp board and filter boards are mounted in the chassis as shown in Figure. The PR preamp board is mounted on the right-hand side of the chassis (as seen from the front of the unit) and the XM crossover boards will be mounted in the remaining space. Important: Note which XM filter boards are single section and which ones are double section. Each board uses / standoffs and fiber washers and # -x/ screws. Install the standoffs in the holes using a - screw and fiber washer as shown in Figure. Insert a fiber washer under each standoff, between the standoff and the chassis. Now mount the XM crossover boards on the standoffs. Insert a fiber washer under each screw, between the head of the screw and the circuit board. Install two blue 0 wires to the sum mode switch. One wire goes to the bottom terminal of the switch and the other goes to the center terminal. The top terminal remains unused. Cover the solder joints with a / length of heat shrink tubing and shrink with heat gun. The connections from the front panel controls to the circuit boards are shown in and. The DC power wiring is shown in. Make the connections as shown between the circular power connector and the circuit boards. The best way to do this is to daisy-chain the wiring: run a wire first from the connector to the terminal block on the first board, then from there to the next board, and so on, visiting the circuit boards from left to right. Using a different color of wire for each power line as shown will make assembly easier. Connect the power to the fan on the rear panel to the filament power. Insert the slide DPDT switch in one of the power lines to the fan. Prepare a grounding assembly as shown in Figure using a piece of wire, the 00 Ohm power resistor and a solder lug. Install the solder lug under one of the nuts on the rear panel and connect the wire to one of the termonals on the pos terminal block of the PR. Wire to PR power ground Solder lug Resistor Figure The Signal Wiring for the INPUT for the rear panel connectors is shown in Figure. Note that the two DPDT switches shown in the figure are in fact halves of the single PDT switch. Twist the red/black/orange wires together as they run from the rear panel to the terminal blocks on the PR circuit board. Finally, the output of the preamp is to be connected to the inputs of the filter boards. See. The left inputs of all filter boards are connected together and connected to the left output of the preamp board. Similarly for the right channel. The pairs running between the boards should be twisted together. When installing the wires between the panels and the circuit boards it may be easier to remove the screws holding the panels in place and laying the panels next to the bottom of the chassis. Install wires to potentiometers. Prepare 0 lengths of red, orange and brown wire. Strip / of insulation from each end. Solder one end of each wire to a potentiometer, as shown in Figure. Note the color orientation. Use / of heat shrink tubing over each potentiometer terminal. Shrink with heat gun. Twist the wires to form a -wire cable. Frequency module Two or four frequency modules are used on each XM crossover board. The frequency module board is marked with components through 0. lists the components that need to be inserted at these locations for igh pass and for Low pass operation. The table also shows typical values for a crossover frequency of 000 z. Values for other frequencies can be calculated by scaling the resistor values. The values for the resistors are given by: = Rtable / Frequency(Kz) Use % resistors with values closest to the calculated value. The frequency module should normally be inserted with the components facing outwards, away from the tubes. Insertion in the other orientation is electrically OK, but there may not be enough clearance that way. XMFM Frequency module The Low pass and igh pass sections take two frequency modules each. On the bandpass sections for center, center-lo and center-hi, there are four frequency modules. The modules on each bandpass board must be selected so that the lo-pass module has a frequency that is higher than the hi-pass module. The values shown in are for the standard fourth order, db/oct filter. For third order alignment use the values in, for second order alignment use or, and for first order use. The constant voltage (Linkwitz-Riley) alignment has a frequency response that is db down at the crossover frequency. The other alignments are db down at the crossover frequency. The constant voltage alignment is generally preferred for the even order filters because the sum of the output voltage on the high and low pass outputs is constant for all frequencies. XM Tube Electronic Crossover Filter Board. Assembly Instructions. eneral The XM is an electronic crossover for use in high quality audio equipment. The basic board has two pair of fourth order filters, one for the left channel and one for the right channel. The cutoff frequency is set with one frequency module for each channel. The wiring of the frequency module sets if it is highpass or low pass and the frequency. The double section filter board is a -th order bandpass design. Two -th order sections are in series, one for the high pass and one for the low pass. The single section filter board has only a single section in each channel, to be used for either high pass or low pass. The single section board is the same as the dual section board, except that the board is only partially populated. PS Tube Power Supply. Assembly Instructions. eneral The PS is a power supply for the XM electronic crossover network. It has a dual +/- 0 VDC high voltage supply and two.vdc regulated filament supplies. The supply has a heavy duty toroidal power transformer with a dual 0V/ 0V line input. The supply is specifically designed for powering the XM electronic crossover network. The XM has a total of (max) AX tubes. The supply can also be used for other purposes. A relay driver is included for driving a signal relay that enables the outputs of the equipment to be powered. Drivers for Light Emitting Diodes are provided that can drive LED Indicator lights. Power Supply Sequencing The power supply sequencing has a dual purpose. The tubes are protected from power turn on and turn off transients by delayed application of anode voltage. The time delay relay driver enables the delayed turnon of the output. The output thus becomes active after the tubes are warmed up! After the power to the PS is turned on the.v filament power will become active immediately, but the V plate supply is not active yet. This prevents damage to the tube cathodes caused by hot spots. After a 0 S delay the V power is turned on. The internal voltages in the tube circuits take some time to stabilize. After another S delay the output relay will be activated. At each stage in the sequence the LED indicators will indicate the state of the power supply. When the power supply is turned off the output relay will be deactivated immediately and the V supply will be turned off. Parts list for circuit board R R R R R R. Diodes: Install the N rectifier diodes, ER0 rectifier diodes and the N zener diode as indicated. Make sure the band on the diode that indicates the cathode matches the white band on the identification. Some diodes have a black body and white band (N, ER0) and some have a white body with black band (N usually). It is very important that the orientation is done correctly. IMPORTANT NOTE: Mount D, D, D and D so there is a 0. to 0. gap between the diodes the circuit board. This will improve the cooling of the diodes. Note that D and D use resistors. Small Capacitors: Install the 0.uF stacked film capacitor (marked ) at location C. Install the 0uF non-polar capacitors at location C and C. These non-polar aluminum electrolytic capacitors can be oriented either way. Just ignore the polarity markings on the circuit board. IC: Use a piece of twisted conductor wire to connect the TO socket to the circuit board at location marked IC. Note the markings B and E near the terminals on the socket. The C terminal is the mounting screw. Use brown for C (case), red for B and orange for E. Insert the wires into the -position terminal block marked with B, C and E TO Socket Terminal block E(orange) E C(brown) C B(red) B Connections for IC Terminal Blocks: The terminal blocks are supplied in units of two and three. Make up a position unit by joining -pos units and -pos unit. Also make up a position unit using -pos units and one -pos unit. Install the terminal blocks as indicated at one of the long sides of the circuit board. Orient so that the wire entry is at the edge of the board. Large Electrolytic Capacitors: Install the large electrolytic capacitors C,,,,,0, as indicated on the circuit board. Make sure the plus and minus side are oriented correctly. The plus side is marked on the circuit board (+). The white band on the capacitors indicates the minus (-) side. IC socket: install a pin IC socket at location IC. Note the orientation. Pin of the socket is nearest R0. Insert the LM voltage comparator into the socket. Make sure the pin orientation is correct. Relay: Install the relay RLY Inductors: Install the two large inductors using # screw and locknut. Place a flat washer between the inductor and the circuit board on each mounting screw. This will prevent warping of the circuit board. Trim and insert the leads into the solder pads near the inductors. Marchand Electronics Inc PO Box 0,Rochester NY () 0 www.marchandelec.com

Use the pair that is cose together for the wires that go to the transformer. Use high voltage (thick insulation) black and white # hookup wire to make the connections between the power entry connector, the power switch on the front panel and the power selector switch on the rear panel and the fuse holder. Install heat shrink tubing over all junctions. Use wire colors as shown in Figure 0. Make sure to securely install the grounding wire between the ground terminal on the power entry connector and the chassis. Solder a piece of green/yellow hookup wire to one of the solder lugs provided. Solder the free end of the wire to the ground terminal and secure the solder lug to the chassis with one of the / screws holding the rear panel. Set the voltage selector switch to the proper voltage before proceeding.install the TO power transistor onto the rear panel of the cabinet using the socket and the mica insulator. Be sure to apply heat sink compound to BOT sides of the mica insulator. The mica insulator is placed between the transistor and the panel. The socket goes on the inside of the rear panel. Wire the secondaries of the two transformers as shown in. Installation of the LED indicators. Identify which end of each LED is the cathode (negative) lead. The LED has a flat on its side next to this lead. Trim both leads to about /. Using / of heat shrink tubing, connect one end of a green wire to the cathode of each LED. slide the tubing over the solder joint, against the LED and shrink with a heat gun. Using / of heat shrink tubing, solder one end of a red wire to the remaining lead of each LED (anode). Twist the free ends of the red wires together and solder to a red wire. Use / of heat shrink tubing to cover this -way split. Install the other end of the red wire to the terminal marked. on the PS board. Connect the green wires to the PS as shown in. Install the LED indicators into the front panel. First insert the black grommet through the hole in the front panel from the outside. Then insert the LED into the grommet from the inside.
