FRIDA KAHLO FINE ARTIST Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist best known for her self-portraits. She overcame many obstacles to follow her dream of becoming a fine artist. She was encouraged by her father to be intellectually independent. Frida once dreamed of being a doctor but later became interested in painting. She lived in Mexico City, New York, Detroit, San Francisco, and Paris. Frida loved wearing bright colors and flowers in her hair. Frida s world inspired her art even her pets made it into paintings. If you had your own art show, WHAT WOULD YOU CREATE? Frida was a big animal lover. She had dogs, spider monkeys, parrots, parakeets, macaws, chickens, a fawn, and an eagle. To paint is the most terrific thing that there is.

AMELIA EARHART AVIATION PIONEER Amelia Earhart is celebrated for her courage, vision, and groundbreaking achievements, in aviation and for women. In 1923, Amelia became the sixteenth woman to receive a pilot s license. She set many aviation records including becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Amelia was the first woman and one of the few civilians to earn an Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross. Although she referred to herself as AE, Amelia became known as Lady Lindy. She worked as a telephone operator, tutor, fashion designer, and writer. In 1932, Amelia developed an aviation-inspired fashion line that was advertised in Vogue magazine. Before becoming a pilot, Amelia worked as a nurse's aid during WWI and then as a social worker in Boston. KATHERINE JOHNSON MATHEMATICIAN & PHYSICIST Katherine is a renowned physicist and mathematician most famous for her work with NASA. She was a pioneer who broke the barriers of race and gender while helping send astronauts into space. Her work helped the Apollo astronauts land and return from their voyage to the moon. In 1960, she made history as the first woman in the Flight Research Division to receive credit as an author of a research report. The report laid out calculations for placing a spacecraft into orbit. When NASA switched to computers, they had Katherine double-check the accuracy of the results. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. Katherine started high school when she was 10 years old.
