NUMBER STANDARD POLICIES AND PRACTICES PAGE 1 OF 4 SUBJECT EFFECTIVE DATE: STANDARDIZED PART MARKING PRACTICES REVISES POLICY DATED: Management System Representative Signature on File APPROVALS Manufacturing Management Signature on File 1.0 PURPOSE This Standard Practice defines the content requirements and acceptable methods for the application of part marking on products supplied to, and/or produced by Eaton Industrial Corporation (EIC). 2.0 POLICY STATEMENT This Standard Practice is applicable to identification marking of components, subassemblies and assemblies manufactured by, or supplied to EIC, when specified by customer requirements or when identification in accordance with Engineering Standard ES-1 is required by the engineering drawing. Application of the requirements herein is mandatory for deliverable Airframe products and optional for Ground Fueling products. 3.0 RESPONSIBILITIES 3.1 Quality Systems management shall be responsible for the establishment and maintenance of this Standard Practice. 3.2. Quality Assurance personnel shall be responsible to ensure flowdown of this Standard Practice to specific part number applications where required. 3.3 Internal and supplier personnel who are designated responsibility to apply part marking shall do so in accordance with the requirements herein. 4.0 APPROVAL REQUIREMENTS EIC Quality Systems Management shall approve all changes to the parameters established by this Standard Practice.
2 of 5 5.0 DEFINITIONS/GENERAL 5.1 Definitions (N/A) 5.2 General 5.2.1 Components shall be marked as specified on the drawing, except as provided in paragraph 5.2.2. 5.2.2 When a method and/or location of part marking is desired that differs from the specified method and/or location on the drawing, the desired method and/or location may be applied, provided that EIC Product Engineering approves the alternate method and/or location in writing. 5.2.3 Markings shall be clearly legible, complete, and neat in appearance and uniform in size, spacing and alignment of characters. Marking shall be applied in a manner, which will not damage the part. Parts damaged by marking are subject to rejection. 5.2.4 Ink stamped markings shall be adherent and shall not be removable when vigorously rubbed simultaneously with the thumb and thumbnail. Slight smearing of the ink is permissible, provided that marking retains sufficient color contrast and is readily legible. 5.2.5 Unless otherwise specified, characters used in part marking shall be vertical capitals and numerals of Gothic style, no more than 3/16, or less than 3/32 in height. The size of the characters is to be compatible to the size of the part being marked. 5.2.6 Marking shall be applied to surfaces specified. Marking should not be placed on precision machined or polished surfaces, bearing, wear ring, or seating surfaces, dry-filmed surfaces, or any other areas restricted through the engineering drawing or specification. 5.2.7 The part or identifying number, which is the engineering drawing number, unless otherwise specified, shall be applied, using the method of marking and location specified. When several options are depicted on single tabulated drawing, the dash (suffix) number of the applicable option shall be applied as a part of the part number. 5.2.8 The drawing change letter (revision) to which the part was manufactured, as shown on the drawing print, or supplemental document, shall be applied at the right of the part number. When no drawing change letter is shown on the drawing, the (dash) symbol shall be used to the right of the part number to indicate this no

Drawing change letter (revision) is optional on Ground Fueling parts. 6.0 DETAILED REQUIREMENTS 6.1 Stamping Methods/Descriptions 6.1.1 Impression Stamping - a marking which is an impression, either cut, pressed, stamped, rolled or pressed into the part with suitable tools. 6.1.2 Vibro-Etching - a marking which is an impression made on the part by a hand-operated vibrating scriber. 6.1.3 Ink Stamping/Quill - a marking applied using rubber or plastic stamps, or a quill-type-marking pen. The ink shall be resistant to water, aviation fuel, oil, and cleaning solvents, and shall be of a contrasting color to the color of the part being marked. 6.1.4 Electro-Chemical Etching - a marking which is an impression made on the part by the action of an etching solution/acid which forms part of an electrical circuit on surfaces exposes through a mask or stencil. This method is not to be used on magnesium alloys. The surface to be etched shall be clean, and after etching, the solution shall be neutralized and surface oiled to prevent corrosion. 6.1.5 Engraving - a marking which is an impression cut or pressed into the part by a suitable shaped tool. A rotating cutter or an axially vibrating needle is usually used with a paragraphtransferring machine to guide the cutter. 6.1.6 Laser Etch - a marking which is an impression made on a part by the displacement of material with a pulsating laser beam. Displaced material (expulsion) surrounding the marking is permissible except where prohibited by dimensional or surface finish requirements. 6.1.7 Tag Parts - applicable part marking is applied to a suitable tag with waterproof ink. The tag is securely attached to each part so that, with normal handling, the tag will remain attached to the part during shipment and stocking. 6.1.8 Mark Container - applicable part marking is collectively applied to a label or area externally, on a suitable container.
4 of 5 6.2 Component and Final Assembly Marking Where identification in accordance with ES-1 is a stipulated requirement, the design activity part number and revision letter is required 6.3 Sub-Assembly Marking Example of acceptable component marking: 86090-210786A Example of acceptable assembly marking: 86090ASSY60160-7A Where identification in accordance with ES-1 is a stipulated requirement, the sub-assembly number and revision is to be prefixed by EIC s design activity code (Cage Code, FSCM, Cin, C.I.) - 86090, followed by the letters ASSY. Example of acceptable sub-assembly marking: 86090ASSY40884-6B 6.4 Raw Material Identification (When unit of measure is inches); Material in the form of bar, rod, sheet, plate, pipe or tube, is to be obviously marked with permanent ink or an identification tag, where suitable space is not available on the material itself. Raw material marking shall include EIC part number, purchase order number and heat number. When a portion of material is cut for production from a stock location, Machine Shop / Stock Room personnel must verify that the remaining stocked raw material is still identified as noted above. 6.4.1 Raw Material Identification (When unit of measure is each); Material in the form of Piece, Each or Billet is to be marked per 6.1.7 or 6.1.8. Identification shall include EIC part number, purchase order number and heat number. 6.5 FAA Marking Products having Parts Manufacturer Approval issued under Section 21.303 will be permanently and legibly marked in accordance with CFR 14, Section 45-15 including:
5 of 5 6.5.1 The letters FAA-PMA ; 6.5.2 The name, trademark, or symbol of the holder of the Parts Manufacturer Approval; 6.5.3 The part number; and 6.5.4 The name and model designation of each type certificated product on which the part is eligible for installation.
