Basic Drawing 1 Spring 2012 Course Information CNRN 13139 Basic Drawing 1 Course Prefix Number: ARTF 1302 005 Course Meeting Location: Computer Science Room 218 Course meeting times: Tuesday and Thursdays 9-11:50 Alexandra McGovern Instructor Contact Information Instructor s office hours: by appointment Instructor s e-mail: amcgovern@utep.edu or leave message at Art Office: (915) 747 5181 Instructor s Introduction Alexandra McGovern is a painter from New York City. BA from Yale University, MFA from Pratt Institute. Course Description Basic Drawing I is the first course in a sequence of foundation level drawing classes structured for the needs of art majors who plan to pursue a career in art. This studio course emphasizes basic aesthetic and technical drawing skills that enable students to represent three-dimensional objects in an environment. Topics to be covered include perspective, eye-hand coordination, correct proportions and scale, positive and negative space, as well as compositional structure and effectiveness. Contour line and value are explored as compositional devices and tools to build volume, mass, and illusionistic space. In this course students will be introduced to methods of using traditional black and white drawing media such as pencil, charcoal, and ink. Drawings will be developed based on three-dimensional sources such as still-lifes, architectural interiors and exteriors, landscapes, the human figure, etc. Students will be given specific drawing assignments for both in class and out of class work. The majority of class time will be spent working on drawings, however, demonstrations and slide lectures will be given to provide examples relative to course work. Critiques will be held regularly for comparative evaluation and critical feedback. This course requires additional time be spent outside of class hours for completion of homework assignments and in class work. There will be a field trip and assignment to the El Paso Museum of Art.

Course Prerequisite Information No prerequisites are required as this is the first drawing course offered within the structure of the foundations program for a BFA or BA degree in Art. It is recommended that art majors take ARTF 1301 Basic Design 1 concurrently with this course. Course Goals and Objectives Development of technical and aesthetic drawing skills needed to render threedimensional forms and space in a convincing illusionistic manner. Develop expertise in working with a variety of black and white drawing media. Gain an understanding of the importance of aesthetic issues such as composition and the formal characteristics of line, shape, value and space in creating visual interest in a drawing. Develop the ability to think and speak critically about artworks through participation in critiques and introduction to art terminology. Develop an outstanding work ethic and the commitment necessary to succeed in achieving the above stated goals and objectives. Course Outcomes Students who successfully complete this class will gain experience and competency in working with basic black and white drawing materials. These students will be able to effectively use line, value, shape, proportion, perspective and foreshortening to create convincing illusionistic drawings of three-dimensional forms and space. In addition, an awareness of the aesthetic aspect of drawing will be achieved through the creative use of the visual art elements and application of compositional principles in their drawings. Through exposure to critique situations and slide lectures, students can acquire a basic knowledge of art terminology and an awareness of important artists and the drawings they make. Course Policies 1. Attendance, punctuality and preparedness standards. Attendance in a studio class is particularly important, in class work and critiques cannot be made up. The Art Department policy for attendance is as follows: you are allowed 3 explained absences, a 4th absence will lower you final grade one whole mark, 5 or more absences result in your being dropped from the class and failing. Tardiness will count as a 1/2 absence.

You should come to class prepared to work; with your completed homework assignment and with the materials you need to work with that day. Art supplies are not provided, so you are responsible for the items on the supply list. _2..Grading Students will hand in 3 portfolios and a final project, these will each count for a 1/4 of the final grade. Students will be primarily evaluated and graded on the quality of the work submitted. Personal progress and effort, attendance and participation in critiques will be also factored in. Incompletes, Withdrawals, Pass/Fail - Incompletes or I grades may be very occasionally considered for students completing satisfactory or better work and having serious, legitimate situations beyond their control requiring additional time to complete the course requirements. All I grades are at the discretion of the instructor and the approval of the Department Chair. -Students hold the full responsibility for withdrawing from this course if that procedure is elected. Withdrawal must be completed on or before the final drop to drop a course with a W. Students missing this deadline will be issued a grade for performance in the course. -This is a grade based course and is not available for audit or pass/fail options. - This course is not available for graduate credit. PLAGIARISM/ACADEMIC DISHONESTY STATEMENT Cheating/Plagiarism: Cheating is unethical and not acceptable. Plagiarism is using information or original wording in a paper without giving credit to the source of that information or wording: it is also not acceptable. Do not submit work under your name that you did not do yourself. You may not submit work for this class that you did for another class. If you are found to be cheating or plagiarizing, you will be subject to disciplinary action, per UTEP catalog policy. Refer to http://www.utep.edu/dos/acadintg.htm for further information.
