DIAMOND TROPICAL HARDWOODS Exotic Hardwoods from Latin America Environmentally Certified
Environmental Conscience The story of Diamond Tropical Hardwoods grew out of a desire to help and serve others. Kevin and Christine Yardley met while both were studying at Harvard University. Upon graduating, the newlyweds volunteered to teach English for the WorldTeach Organization in rural Costa Rica. Because there was no guarantee of them being stationed in the same area, Christine became a teacher in the program while Kevin began dedicating his prodigious energy to protecting the environment in an entrepreneurial way. Costa Rica had some of the fastest deforestation rates in the world, so there was a desperate need to offset this environmental destruction. Costa Rica s bio-diversity includes 5 percent of all known species in an area the size of West Virginia. The reforestation effort in Costa Rica has done a great deal of good. In 1992, Diamond Tropical Hardwoods bought their first degraded cattle farm and began planting teak. In addition to farming teak, they have planted seventy other species including endangered native trees such as mahogany, purpleheart and cocobolo rosewood. Today, their 12 plantations protect more than 1000 acres of primary and secondary jungle. The company has seen the impact of logging in the rainforest and the widespread harm that it produces. This is why Diamond Tropical Hardwoods adheres to internationally recognized environmental principles, and works with leading organizations to certify the responsible sourcing of the wood. We plant our trees! PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT! USE ONLY RESPONSIBLY REFORESTED HARDWOODS!
Teak (Tectona Grandis) is the most stable wood in the world. Both durable and beautiful, teak is used in the finest outdoor furniture, in high-end flooring, and in luxury ship construction. In industrial application teak is similar in hardness to oak but carries far greater character and grain. Teak is impregnated with natural oils that protect the wood from time and the elements. This grand hardwood has been used for centuries in temples in Asia, and in modern times it has become a key material in the best yachts and on the decks of warships and submarines. Cocobolo Rosewood (Dalbergia Retusa) is one of the finest and most beautifully figured woods in the world. True Rosewoods in the dalbergia family have colors as widely diverse as a rainbow. An incredibly figured wood, cocobolo is very hard with brilliant colors and amazing black stripes. Oranges, reds, browns and blacks all swirled uniquely together are a trademark of this fantastic wood. The best cocobolo comes from Nicaragua as wood from this source is harder and more colorful than Mexican cocobolo. Goncalo Alves/Tigerwood Ebony (Astronium Graveolens) is a very hard, dense and fancy tropical wood with incredible black stripes. The wood has beautiful colors that range from red to yellow and orange. Goncalo alves wood finishes with an amazing mirror like shine, yet with an unusual variegated figure. The black stripes can be so pronounced that the wood resembles black ebony. Goncalo with a sliver of sapwood shows brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows along with black figuring. The diverse colors and bright contrast make Goncalo Alves one of the most sought-after woods in the world. Monkeypod (Pithecolobium Samans) is one of the finest cabinet/furniture grade woods. Monkeypod crotch wood is recognized by experts as the most beautiful wood in the world. The species comes in amazing widths and thicknesses and is very similar to black walnut in terms of figure and character. A soft, workable wood with terrific properties, monkeypod is often used for artisan tables with a natural edge or wane. Spanish Cedar (Cedrela Odorata) varies in color from pink to red with either a red-brown or red-purple tone. The sapwood is pink or white. This wood is straight-grained with small pores and a fine and uniform texture. Light weight but incredibly strong, this durable wood is used in fine furniture and crafts. It is prized by artists, architects, and designers for its rarity and extreme beauty.
Brazilian Cherry/Jatoba/Redheart (Hymenaea Courbaril) is a bright red, beautiful hard wood that looks terrific in flooring. Used for accents and to highlight the finest woodworking projects, this wood has very good woodworking properties and takes a lustrous finish. It possesses brilliant red and mottled colors while being amazingly durable and stable. Mahogany (Swietenia Macrophylla) is typically straight grain, often with a ribbon figure. It is very easy to work, even with hand tools. Color ranges from creamy-white sapwood to reddish brown heartwood, often with a distinctive purple cast. Mahogany is moderately light and hard with world class wood working charateristics. Preferred for its high density and insect-resistant properties, mahogany is famous for durability and resilience. Santa Maria (Enterolobium Cyclocarpum) is a wood with colors and figure very similar to black walnut. The trees are immense in size and produce boards up to 50 inches wide. Often used in free form tables, Santa Maria is a softer wood that is very easy to craft. Santa Maria is distinguished by three-dimensional figures, colorful burls and a unique character. It is a distinctive choice for custom projects and architecturally-designed furniture. Granadillo (Platymiscum) is a gorgeous wood that varies from violet to dark red to brown with frequent dark stripes and pronounced figure. It is very hard, heavy and dense with tight grain and fine texture. Frequently used in fine furniture and cabinetry, flooring, musical instruments and specialty items such as violin bows and billiard cues. Mango Fruitwood (Mangifera Indica) is the most beautiful wood in the world if you take into account the diversity of color and figure. The superb grain ranges from unique yellow, pink, orange, tan and green streaks and swirls. It is a very workable fruitwood, great for fine furniture and crafts. Yellowheart (Mora Oleifera) is an amazingly hard and durable wood with a unique bright yellow color. Ideal for marquetry or detailing in the finest projects, yellowheart holds its color well over time and has terrific woodworking properties. The wood is known for its bright golden ribbon grain, and for having better tap tone than mahogany.
