2 INTRODUCTION We produce luxury wood and stone stationery to the highest of standards. Made in our studio in the UK, our products with our distinctive flexible hinge mechanism, are both stylish and durable and can be tailor-made to your requirements. 2 Introduction

3 THE BARK We have curated a wood catalogue that represents some of the world s finest woods, many of which are often used to make musical instruments, fine furniture and luxury automobile dashboards. As each wood is different, careful individual workmanship and finishing is needed, which is completed by our craftspeople. Some of the wood we use, namely Cherry Crown and Figured Alder, engrave particularly well, meaning we can engrave a design or corporate logo onto these woods with stunning results. Using our special white dyed Ash we can also print full colour as an alternative to engraving. To achieve the thin cover of our flexible hinge books we have developed a technique which combines a wood veneer and a ply substrate to give the cover its strength and durability. Veneer production is approximately 4000 times more efficient than wood plank production. Also, many of these woods are rarely available to purchase as solid woods due to their high value. We include a certificate with each product which displays the details of the log and batch the tree came from. If there s a wood you re particularly fond of that isn t already part of our catalogue we will do our best to source it for you. THE ROCK Our stone range is a relatively new addition to Bark & Rock. We just love the tactile nature and amazing colours and textures the stones display. At the moment we are offering a selection of seven different stones on to which we can print or foil. All our notebooks, sketchbooks and folders can be personalised on the front and on the inside, for example, with a beautifully designed cover page. Introduction 3

6 WOOD OVERVIEW Burrs The burrs or burls we use are some of the rarest and most unusual woods in the world. Burrs are often used in luxury car dashboards, fine furniture and musical instruments. We hand-pick each of the leaves and carefully craft each one to produce a single product. The patterns will vary from sheet to sheet as this is a natural commodity. Chestnut Burr Pepperwood Burr Sweet Gum Burr Maple Burr Walnut Burr Figured The figure produces a small ripple appearance across the grain and is most commonly found in Maple or Sycamore. The name originated from the use of the fiddleback Sycamore in violin production. Clusters Clusters have small irregularities like burrs and add a rustic interest to the wood veneer. 7 Crown cut (top row): a veneer slicing technique which produces the first bundles from a log when sliced over the heart. Produces the so-called cathedral structure. Core Range Quarter cut (bottom row): the log is cut in quarters and each quarter is then straight sliced. This generally produces a veneer with a relatively uniform linear vertical grain. Cherry Crown Santos Rosewood Crown Walnut Crown Padouk Ebony SERVICES WE OFFER Laser engraving - etches an image or pattern onto a material, with varying effects depending on the type of material you are engraving onto. This works particularly well on our Cherry Crown and Figured Alder. Debossing - sometimes referred to as blind embossing, is the process of imprinting a design into the product, creating a depth which produces a tactile option of personalisation. Foil blocking - is a more colourful option than debossing. Foils can either be metallic in finish or can come in many different colours. Flat bed UV printing - opens up new possibilities in customisation as we can print on almost any flat surface. Digital printing - make your products bespoke with the option of a printed paper wrap-around or belly band, custom notebook pages and an exclusive cover page. Wood Overview 7

8 CHESTNUT BURR Our Chestnut burr is a gorgeous dark tan colour with a rippled texture and a slight luminescence. This burr looks great with debossing and foil blocking. These timeless personalisation techniques will suit the complexity of this wood without detracting from its overall beauty. 8 Chestnut Burr

9 PEPPERWOOD BURR Pepperwood is a stunning tan coloured burr with various warm earthy tones threaded throughout. The beauty of this wood lends itself to the technique of foil blocking which produces stunning results. It also works well with debossing and creates a strong yet subtle statement. Pepperwood Burr 9

10 SWEET GUM BURR This striking wood has swirls of greens, greys and tans throughout creating a rustic, natural appearance. This wood, with its numerous earthy tones is well suited to foil blocking or debossing and works well with uncomplicated, simple logos and text. 10 Sweet Gum Burr

11 MAPLE BURR The Maple burr is a wonderful rich rust colour with swirls of dark tans and brown. Distinctly different from the usually pale, almost milky colour of Maple, this burr is effortlessly stylish and remarkable. We think a timeless gold foil compliments the warm tones in this wood brilliantly and creates an understated elegance. Maple Burr 11

12 WALNUT BURR Our Walnut burr creates a bold statement with its dark brown and black tones. This dark, moody wood looks brilliant with a metallic foil such as the traditional silver, gold or copper. Your design is sure to stand out and add a level of refinement to the sophisticated wood. 12 Walnut Burr

13 CHERRY CROWN We use a crown cut Cherry which has a wonderful cathedral grain pattern and engraves extremely well. 14 SANTOS ROSEWOOD CROWN This is a traditional wood with a silky smooth texture. It consists of warm dark browns swirling with the black pigment in the grain creating stunning cathedrals in the crown cut. The lustrous texture of this wood works particularly well with debossing, which produces a tactile option of personalisation. It also looks great with foil blocking as the contrast between dark wood and metallic or a coloured foil looks luxurious. 14 Santos Rosewood Crown

15 PADOUK Padouk is a warm, full-bodied blood red coloured wood which is quarter cut and has a vertical straight grain. Padouk 15

16 WALNUT CROWN Walnut is a classic wood and the cathedrals created by the crown cut make it particularly exquisite. The understated elegance of this traditional wood lends itself to the technique of foil blocking with either conventional metallics or the juxtapositon of modern and classic with a bold colour. It also works well with debossing and creates a strong yet subtle statement. 16 Walnut Crown

17 EBONY Our quarter cut Ebony is jet black with warm toned tan stripes running in straight lines with the grain of the wood. This dark wood looks brilliant with a metallic foil. The warm toned stripes in the grain work particularly well with complimentary gold or copper foil. Alternatively, to modernise the product and make a statement, a bright colour works well too. 17 Ebony

18 BIRD S EYE MAPLE This fascinating wood has the appearance of eyes which are the result of depressions in the surface of the trunk distorting growth rings. This anomaly is rarley found in the Maple tree and it s not until the tree is logged that it is discovered. The light colour of this wood works well with foil blocking and would look fantastic with both conventional metallics or a bright colour. 18 Bird s Eye Maple

19 FIGURED ALDER Our figured Alder is a magnificent golden colour with the ripple of the figure running across the grain. This wood engraves beautifully. This wood works particularly well with laser engraving. We can engrave your company s logo on the back, or even a full design across the whole book. Figured Alder 19

20 OAK CLUSTER This rustic wood is a beautiful milky brown colour with darker chocolate brown in clusters throughout. This wood, with its soothing earthy tones, is well suited to foil blocking or debossing. 20 Oak Cluster

21 ELM CLUSTER This luxurious, cognac brown wood is one of our more intricate with its swirling texture of tonal shades giving it the appearance of a slight glow. As this wood is strikingly complex, it is best suited to simple personalisation and branding and therefore works well with foil blocking, both with traditional metallics and less traditional colours. 26 EVEREST With its random bleached markings, Everest is one of our most distinctive stones. The contrast of lights and darks gives this stone a dramatic finish. 26 Everest

27 FUJI This sombre, matte stone has an understated elegance with its subtle greyhued shadowing. Fuji 27

28 ANDES Andes is the most extravagant of our stones, a metallic copper radiates throughout giving this stone an intriguing iridescent glow. 28 Andes
