Antiques and The Arts Weekly. 22 April, 2016 April 22, 2016 Antiques and The Arts Weekly 29 Auction Action In Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. Bouguereau s L invocation Brings $240,000 At Stefek s GROSSE POINTE FARMS, MICH. March 24 was a very good day at Stefek s Auction, despite the rain outside, local, national and international bidders all showed up (either in person or online), attracted to the important artwork being offered. The auction featured two sections, a historical portion and a contemporary section. The works in the contemporary section achieved a sell through rate of more than 50 percent, and notable results of the historical works accomplished the best rates, selling more than 70 percent of the paintings that crossed the block. The most outstanding sale of the evening was the William Adolphe Bouguereau painting L invocation à la Vierge, which achieved a realized price of $240,000, including the buyer s premium. The contemporary result highlights included a Paul Jenkins print, which sold with a price realized at $6,600; a James Rosenquist print achieved $1,800 and one by Sam Francis reached $2,160. Finally, a Romare Bearden print, Quilting Time engaged the audience and brought a price realized of $3,840. All prices reported include the buyer s premium. For information, 313-881-1800 or www.stefeksauctions.com. William Adolphe Bouguereau s luminous painting, L invocation à la Vierge, achieved a realized price of $240,000. George Washington Museum & Textile Museum Lecture On Change & Tradition In Soviet Central Asia April 28 LONDON On April 18, Halcyon Gallery will present its very first exhibition devoted entirely to the works of Andy Warhol. With more than 100 pieces on display, including graphics, portfolios and original works on paper and canvas, Warhol Icons will be an exploration of the Pop Art icon s artistic ingenuity and importance. There will be a private view on Wednesday, April 20, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, and the show stays up until May 15. The exhibition spans Warhol s career from his early illustrative works of the 1950s through Pop Art s 1960s heyday until his untimely death in 1987, addressing the artist s exploration of every facet of modern life, from consumerism and commissions to Communist politics. Among portraits of iconic figures and celebrity friends such as screen siren Ingrid Bergman and champion heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali, the exhibition includes an original self-portrait Self Portrait in Fright Wig, a striking collage work on paper that celebrates the artist s enduring legacy and mastery of his brand. Displayed according to Warhol s original 1962 brief as to simulate cans stacked along supermarket shelves, the instantly recognizable packaging present in the Campbell s Soup I portfolio exemplifies Warhol s fascination with commercial culture, the mainstream and mass production. In the same room, an original Campbell s Soup Box: Chicken Soup is an interesting development commissioned following the success of the former portfolio, the soup boxes further demonstrate a revolutionary period in art and culture where the status of everyday consumer items was elevated. Along with Campbell s Soup I, the exhibition features five of Warhol s most celebrated portfolios of ten, including Cowboys and Indians and Endangered Species the former deriving from the treasure trove of archival photographs, postcards and images of Native American artifacts that the artist collected throughout his life, while the latter is a nod to Warhol s ongoing interest in conservation and the environment. WASHINGTON, D.C. A lecture, Change and Tradition in Soviet Central Asia, on Thursday, April 28, at 6 pm, is at the George Washington University Museum (GW) and Textile Museum. Andrew Hale, collector and curator will discuss the influence of revolutionary Russia on Central Asia s textile and other traditions. Textiles have been part of Central Asian identity for hundreds of years, peaking in the Nineteenth Century with the production of ikats that featured bold, original designs and vibrant colors. In the Twentieth Century, the Soviet Union came to power, bringing economic change and modernization to the region. Hale is an internationally recognized expert in the nomadic textiles and silk weaving traditions of Central Asia, as well as the author of numerous articles and books on Central Asian art. During his talk, he will pull from his personal archive of more than 2,000 photographs documenting this region in the Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries. The cost is free for museum members and current GW students, faculty and staff, and $10 for the public. Advance registration is required. Register online at www.museum.gwu.edu or call 202-994-7394. The museum is at 701 21st Street, NW. Warhol Icons Show Has More Than 100 Works On Display Self Portrait in Fright Wig by Andy Warhol, 1986, silkscreen and paper collage on paper. The exhibition also features the rarely seen Anatom (Rado Watches), produced just a few months before his death and one of his last works ever created. The work is one of only three canvases created by Warhol depicting the Rado DiaStar Anatom watch. Rado Switzerland a watch brand renowned for its sleek, luxury timepieces commissioned the artist to produce the series of paintings in conjunction with the firm s 70th anniversary in 1987. Halcyon Gallery is at 144-146 New Bond Street. For information, +44 20 3468 0842 or www.halcyongallery.com. Paul Jenkins, Phenomena Point 7, realized $6,600.
