BLOOR WEST UKRAINIAN MURAL MAKE SURE TO READ THIS DOCUMENT BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION APPLICATION EXTENDED DEADLINE: Friday, February 17, 2017 at 4pm (ET) Email completed package to bloorwestmural@gmail.com More information at www.bloorwestmural.com Ukrainian Canadian Social Services - Toronto is initiating the Bloor West Ukrainian Mural project by sending out a call for submissions to create a collaborative large-scale mural located on the east side of the Ukrainian Canadian Social Services building located on Bloor and Jane in Toronto, Ontario. To celebrate Canada s 150 year anniversary and 125 years of Ukrainians in Canada, we would like to bring multiple artists together to create a long-term mural and landmark commemorating Bloor West as Toronto s largest Ukrainian centre. The selected mural artist(s) will be responsible for the implementation of a mural commission to be painted on a section of the wall which will be determined at the consultation stage of the project. Selected artists will meet with the Mural Project team to combine their original artwork/design elements together to create the mural as one cohesive piece. The purpose of the mural: To create a current and physical Ukrainian-Canadian presence in the city To animate and revitalize the Ukrainian-Canadian art scene and cultural growth in Bloor West and surrounding neighbourhoods Other points to keep in mind for the mural: To acknowledge the shop owners, local businesses and professionals that made this area a community hub for Ukrainian immigrants To show a broad perspective of what it is to be Ukrainian-Canadian within Toronto s diversity To honour an area that thrived, became a popular neighbourhood, and played a leading and important a role in the development of the city To demonstrate the Ukrainian-Canadian communities continuting contribution to the city s multiculturalism and identity Preparing your submission, please familiarize yourself with the Ukrainian Canadian Social Services wall and surrounding area and make sure to review the guidelines thoroughly. Artists will be selected by a jury through a two stage process involving a detailed proposal and design proposal followed by an interview. Also note that this is a collaborative project and your portion of the design may need adaptation to result in a cohesive mural. GUIDELINES We only accept electronic applications Use the checklist provided to make sure that your application is complete and com piled in the same order as the checklist Make sure that your application is signed and that there are no corrupted files or missing images/links Label your pages and make sure the application is arranged in the same order as the checklist provided We will not accept late applicantions unless there is a clear DEADLINE EXTENSION stated on our website ELIGIBLITY Have a background in visual art and collaborative projects Currently residing in Canada and a Canadian citizen Can familiarize yourself with the purpose of the mural THINGS TO KNOW You will need to make yourself available for a series of scheduled meetings with the Bloor West Ukrainian Mural team and artists to plan out the final mural. Hours will not be set until we have created a cohesive plan for the mural. Dates and hours will not be confirmed until the second stage of the project has been completed. Number of artists taking part in the project will depend on the number of successful candidates. You must be available during the designated dates for painting. Note that we cannot accommodate your work schedule during the painting of the mural in the summer Deviation from your initial submission, deemed unacceptable by the mural team, could lead to dismissal from the project at anytime. We are only accepting submissions that use any form of outdoor/waterproof paint. We are not accepting applications that require hardware and artwork that needs to adhere to the wall. There will be an honorarium given to the chosen artists and materials will be covered by the Bloor West Ukrainian Mural project. We will not cover travel and accommodations for this project. You will be required to agree to being interviewed and filmed or photographed during the process. HEALTH AND SAFETY Based on Ontario s Health and Safety Act, you are required to take the Working at Height course and Aerial Work Platform Training. You will be need to be available to take these courses before you start the mural. Costs for training will be covered by the Bloor West Village Ukrainian Mural project. You will be required to sign a waiver form before you begin your work at the mural site.
