Overview Application Notes 1. Overview 1.1 Definition SFR (Single Frequency Repeater) enabled radios can forward data and service. SFR helps you expand the communication range of the conventional system without base stations or repeaters. Compared with the repeater, SFR takes only one frequency and has higher spectrum utilization. 1.2 Application SFR is applicable to the radios in direct mode (Sender/Receiver for short hereinafter) to expand the communication distance. 1.3 Principle The SFR enabled radio (SFR Radio hereinafter) receives services on one timeslot and forwards them on another timeslot. As shown in figure below, in conventional direct mode, the distance between MS1 and MS3 is out of the communication range, while MS2 is within the range of both MS1 and MS3. Communication between MS1 and MS3 can be realized by enabling SFR on MS2 (in direct mode repeating mode, DM-R for short). The forwarding of an individual call is taken as the example hereinafter to introduce how MS1 calls MS3. 1. MS1 initiates a call to MS3 on timeslot 1 (S1). 2. MS2 forwards the call on timeslot 2 (S2) on upon receiving on S1. 3. MS3 receives the call on S2. 2

Application Notes Overview Figure 1-1 SFR Schematic Diagram MS2 forwards the service from MS3 to MS1 in the same way. As for MS4, which is within the communication range of both MS1 and MS2, can receive the call from MS1 on S1 directly as well as forwarded by MS2 on S2, however, it only receives on the first decodes timeslot. Services can be forwarded covers voice, data and supplementary. End-to-end encryption and over the air encryption are supported. 1.4 Restrictions The SFR Radio must be in the communication range of all Sender/Receiver of the conventional direct mode. The SFR Radio and the Sender/Receiver must be on the same channel. Only the digital channel supports SFR. SFR is not compatible with Receive Only. SFR is not compatible with Priority Interrupt Encode, Priority Interrupt Decode or TDMA Direct Mode. One conventional system only supports one SFR Radio. For end-to-end encryption enabled system, multiple Radio are supported, however, all of them must use different encryption key. 3

Overview Application Notes 1.5 Examples Demo 1: In a big industry park, the distance between radios in East and West, South and North, or other directions, is too long for them to communicate directly, however, radios in the centre can communicate with any other radio in the park. Now, an SFR enabled radio (MS2) can be put in the centre to realize the communication of all radios in all directions. MS N MS1 MS2 (DM-R) MS3 MS4 Figure 1-2 Demo 1 Demo 2: A worker holding MS1 in a tunnel wants to communicate with the workmate holding MS3 in the camp, but the distance between the tunnel and the camp is out of the direct communication range. If there is an area that within the communication range of MS1 and MS3, an SFR enabled radio (MS2) can be put there to establish the communication between MS1 and MS3. MS1 MS2 (DM-R) MS3 Figure 1-3 Demo 2 4

Application Notes Overview 1.6 Version SFR Radio PD98X with firmware version R8.0 or later supports SFR Sender/Receiver Portable radio complied with DMR Tier1 or Tier2 5

Configuration Application Notes 2. Configuration You need to configure the SFR Radio and Sender/Receiver via CPS before using the feature. The SFR Radio and Sender/Receiver must use the same channel, i.e., they must use the same colour code and frequency. The channel of Colour Code 1 and receive & transmit frequency 411.22 MHz is taken to introduce the configuration hereinafter. 2.1 Configuration Tool V8.00.07.000 or later 2.2 Configuration Procedure 2.2.1 Configuring the SFR Radio Perform the following steps to configure the SFR Radio. Step 1 Configure the SFR channel. CPS Path: Conventional -> Channel -> Digital Channel Figure 2-1 Configure the SFR channel 1. Configure the colour code. 2. Check SFR and Auto Open SFR. 6

Application Notes Configuration Note Auto Open SFR is optional. The Auto Open SFR enabled radio enters SFR mode automatically upon power-on. If Auto Open SFR is not checked, you need to check the SFR menu or configure a corresponding shortcut key. 3. Configure the receive frequency and transmit frequency. Note If Programming is checked (CPS path: Conventional -> General Setting -> Menu), you can set the frequency and colour code on the radio. Menu path: Menu -> Program -> Channel -> Frequency/Colour Code. Do not set the transmit frequency different from receive frequency through the radio menu, or SFR will not work. Moreover, reconfiguration via CPS is needed to make it take effect. Step 2 Check Radio Setting (SFR). CPS path: Conventional -> General Setting -> Menu -> Radio Setting SFR is a submenu of Radio Setting, you need to check Radio Setting to enable SFR. You can enable or disable SFR through the radio menu if SFR is checked. Figure 2-2 Check SFR Step 3 Configure an SFR shortcut key (optional) CPS path: Conventional -> General Setting -> Buttons. SK1 Short is taken as the example in figure below. 7

Configuration Application Notes Figure 2-3 Configure the SFR shortcut key 2.2.2 Configuring the Sender/Receiver The Sender/Receiver must use a channel exactly the same as that of the SFR Radio, and enables Pseudo Trunk. CPS path:conventional -> Channel -> Digital Channel Step 1 Configure the colour code. Step 2 Select Pseudo Trunk as the timeslot. Step 3 Configure the receive frequency and transmit frequency. 8

Application Notes Configuration Figure 2-4 Configure the Sender/Receive Note If Programming is checked (CPS path: Conventional -> General Setting -> Menu), you can set the frequency and colour code on the radio. Menu path: Menu -> Program -> Channel -> Frequency/Colour Code. 9

Operation Application Notes 3. Operation The operation and UI of the Sender/Receiver is the same as that in conventional direct mode. This chapter only introduces the using method and UI of the SFR Radio. Auto Open SFR enabled radio via CPS will enter the SFR mode automatically upon power-on, others by going to Menu -> Settings -> Radio Set -> SFR -> Enable or pressing the programmable key. DM-R appears on the SFR Radio home interface, as shown below. CH D1 Zone 1 Menu Figure 3-1 Home of SFR Radio During the forwarding, the Radio uses high power ( ), the interface shows a forwarding icon, and the LED keeps red. UI of forwarding a call see figures below. Sam Figure 3-2 Forwarding a Common Call Sam Figure 3-3 Forwarding an Emergency Call During the forwarding of the data service and supplementary service, the SFR Radio uses high power 10

Application Notes Operation ( ) and the LED keeps red. The Radio cannot monitor or participate in the services between the Sender and Receiver. The SFR Radio also can be used as a common radio when there is no forwarding. During the forwarding, it can transmit when PTT is held down. The radio will go back to forward after finishing its own service. 11
