Descendants of John Hassall First Generation 1. John Hassall. John married Elizabeth Ward 30 Dec 1745 in Newport, Shropshire, England. 1,2 Children from this marriage were: 2 M i. Thomas Hassall was christened 18 Feb 1746 in Newport, Shropshire, England. 3 3 M ii. John Hassall was christened 20 Jan 1752 in Newport, Shropshire, England. 4 F iii. Sarah Hassall was christened 1 Jan 1756 in Newport, Shropshire, England. 5 General Notes: This Sarah Hassell must have died because a second Sarah was christened in 1761. 5 M iv. Richard Hassall was christened 9 Jul 1758 in Newport, Shropshire, England. 6 6 F v. Sarah Hassall was christened 22 Apr 1761 in Newport, Shropshire, England. 7 F vi. Elizabeth Hassall was christened 7 Nov 1762 in Newport, Shropshire, England 8 and was buried 26 Jan 1767 in Newport, Shropshire, England. 9 8 F vii. Anne Hassall was born in 1766 and was christened 6 Apr 1766 in Newport, Shropshire, England. 10 + 9 F viii. Elizabeth Hassall 11 was christened 17 Apr 1768 in Newport, Shropshire, England. 12 Elizabeth married Thomas Bayley 11 14 May 1787 in Newport, Shropshire, England. 13 1

Second Generation (Children) 9. Elizabeth Hassall 11 (John 1 ) was christened 17 Apr 1768 in Newport, Shropshire, England. 12 Elizabeth married Thomas Bayley 11 14 May 1787 in Newport, Shropshire, England. 13 General Notes: It is thought that Thomas Bayley and Elizabeth Hassall are the parents of John Bayley, christened 2 January 1789. More research needs to be done to confirm this. The child from this marriage was: 10 M i. John Bayley 14,15,16 was born about 2 Jan 1789 in Newport, Shropshire, England, 17,18 died about 24 Feb 1859 in Walsall, Staffordshire, England 19,20 about age 70, and was buried 24 Feb 1859 in Walsall, Staffordshire, England. 21 General Notes: My assumption is that John Bayley Sr., father of John Horatio Robert Bayley, the John baptized Jan 1816 in Wellington, is also the father of Enoch Bayley, baptized in Wolverhampton in 1828. And that this is the same John Bayley baptized in Newport, Shropshire in 1789. We know that this John Bayley Sr., baptized in Newport in 1789 is the father of George Bayley, b.1822, because John Sr. and his wife Jane were living with George in 1851 and Jane also in 1861; George also paid for their burial plots. We also know from census records that Jane Bayley was born in Wilbrighton. In JHR Bayley's book of poetry: Harvest Sheaves, he writes a poem about his grandmother's well in Wilbrighton. In 1851 JHR Bayley was living in St. James Square in Wolverhampton. In 1853, the Purshouses were living there when Sarah Purshouse married Enoch Bayley. They may have been living there earlier than 1853. When one of Enoch's descendants emigrated to Australia, they had with them a book of poems by JHR Bayley. My assumption is that John, Enoch and George Bayley are all brothers, even though born several years apart. More connections need to be made before these assumptions can be confirmed. There are also two other Bayley children, Ann and Samuel, both baptized in Wolverhampton, in 1829 and 1830, and it is thought that these two children also belong in this same family. Noted events in his life were: Baptism: 2 Jan 1789, Newport, Shropshire, England. 22,23 Occupation: Mercer, Jan 1816. 24 Residence: Crown St., Wellington, Shropshire, England, Jan 1816. 24 Occupation: Schoolmaster, 28 Mar 1828. 25 Residence: North St., Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England, 28 Mar 1828. 26 Census: Birmingham, Warwickshire, UK, 1841. 27 Census: Walsall, Staffordshire, England, 1851. 28 Occupation: Assistant teacher, 1851. 28 Residence: Lower Rushall St., Walsall, Staffordshire, England, 1851. 28 Residence: Rushall St., Walsall, STS, UK, Feb 1859. 29 Burial Fact: Purchase of Grave Site, Queen Street Cemetery, Walsall, STS, 24 Feb 1859. 30 2

Cemetery: Queen Street Cemetery, 24 Feb 1859, Walsall, Staffordshire, England. 21 John married Jane Smith, 14 daughter of Thomas Smith and Mary, 1 Feb 1812 in Gnosall, Staffordshire, England. 31,32 Jane was born about 16 Nov 1789 in Wilbrighton, Staffordshire, England, 33,34 was christened 16 Nov 1789 in Gnosall, Staffordshire, England, 35 died about 2 Feb 1867 in Walsall, Staffordshire, England 36,37 about age 77, and was buried 2 Feb 1867 in Walsall, Staffordshire, England. 38 General Notes: Wilbrighton STS is halfway between Gnosall STS and Newport SAL. There are no parish records for Wilbrighton and the nearest church would be in Gnosall. John H.R. Bayley, in his book of poems, mentions his grandmother's well in Wilbrighton. This would most likely be Jane's mother, Mary Smith. There are several other Janes in the Gnosall parish baptismal records, but only one Jane that married a Bayley. There is only one Bayley marriage for the time period in question and that is the marriage of Jane Smith to John Bayley in 1812. Noted events in her life were: Residence: Crown St., Wellington, Shropshire, England, Jan 1816. 24 Census: Birmingham, Warwickshire, UK, 1841. 39 Census: Walsall, Staffordshire, England, 1851. 28 Residence: Lower Rushall St., Ablewell House, Walsall, Staffordshire, 1851. 28 Census: Walsall, Staffordshire, England, 1861. 40 Residence: Walsall, Staffordshire, England, 1861. 40 Residence: Lichfield St., Walsall, STS, UK, Feb 1867. 41 Burial Fact: Purchase of Grave Site, Queen Street Cemetery, Walsall, STS, 2 Feb 1867. 30 Cemetery: Queen Street Cemetery, 2 Feb 1867, Walsall, Staffordshire, England. 38 3
