Prpsed cncepts will nt be cnsidered fr this RFQ. The Baltimre Museum f Art is pleased t ffer this pprtunity fr artists. The BMA will cntract with ne artist r artist team, in partnership with an area nn-prfit, t prduce the final prjected 10-mnth lng prject n the theme f hme in the Museum s new Jseph Educatin Center. The artist will activate the Museum s Cmmns with artwrk (and, if relevant, prject dcumentatin) and with a series f free public prgrams implemented during the run f the installatin, Nvember 2017 August 2018. The selected artist/nn-prfit team will begin wrk in May 2017, six mnths prir t the pening. The selected artist will: Wrk with a certified 501(c)(3) nnprfit in the greater Baltimre area t develp a year-lng prject in the Cmmns and wrk with BMA staff t develp an accmpanying suite f public prgrams. The successful prject will: Thughtfully engage the cmmunity in the prcess f its making. Be apprpriate fr installatin within a museum cntext fr a perid f up t ne year. T that end, the prject must 1) have a strng visual cmpnent, 2) be made frm materials that will endure ver the curse f a 12-mnth perid with little t n maintenance, and 3) be deemed safe and secure fr a mderate t heavily trafficked public space. Set itself in innvative dialgue with the theme f hme and the cllectin-based exhibitin (see belw fr descriptin) in the adjacent space. This includes develping an artistic prject arund that tpic that lends itself t related public prgramming. Be apprpriate and cmpelling t a brad segment f the museum-ging public, including children and families. QUALIFICATIONS Artists wh have an established scial engagement cmpnent t their artistic practice are encuraged t cnsider this prject. Experience prducing prjects in cnjunctin with, r under the auspices f, a registered 501(c)(3) nn-prfit is strngly preferred. Demnstrated experience wrking n a prject f this scpe and budget is als preferred. Artists residing in r with a cnnectin t Baltimre preferred.

ABOUT THE JOSEPH EDUCATION CENTER The Jseph Educatin Center is designed t fuel new ways f thinking abut art, culture, and cntemprary life in Baltimre and beynd. Thrugh exhibitins, public prgrams, utreach, and partnerships, the Center deepens visitr understanding f human experiences and stimulates the creative thinking essential fr addressing sciety s challenges. The Center is cmprised f five
intercnnected spaces a ttal f almst 5,000 square feet adjacent t the Museum s newly renvated Zamiski East Entrance and East Wing Lbby. The spaces are: Gallery (1,883 sq. ft.): Visitrs encunter art wrks frm acrss the cllectin, frm different cultures and time perids, rganized arund the theme f hme. Innvative interpretatin and digital strategies engage them in clse lking, inquiry, reflectin, respnse, and sharing. Imagining Hme is the inaugural three-year exhibitin in this space. Cmmns (864 sq. ft.): Partnering with the selected artist/cmmunity rganizatin, the BMA will develp prgrams that reflect the vices and creativity f the cmmunity. This flexible space will hst cnversatins and wrkshps. Studi (1,296 sq. ft.): A welcming and lively studi space fr hands-n experiences that spark inventin, artistic expressin, and encurage thinking thrugh making amng visitrs f all ages. The existing Schl Entrance (748 sq. ft.) is a welcming space fr schl children turing the BMA. The Dcent Rm (273 sq. ft.) creates new pprtunities fr the Museum s vlunteer educatrs t research and learn abut the cllectin and exhibitins, and develp learning experiences fr visitrs. ABOUT THE EXHIBITION THEME HOME Imagining Hme is the first exhibitin in the Museum s new Jseph Educatin Center. Installed in a 1,883-sq.-ft. gallery, Imagining Hme features 33 bjects frm the full spectrum f the Museum s cllectin paintings, sculptures, decrative arts, textiles, and wrks n paper frm the Americas, Eurpe, Africa, and Asia spanning ancient t cntemprary times. It pened in Octber 2015 and will be n view fr three years. Fr centuries and acrss cultures, artists have created bjects abut r fr the hme. Whether decrative r functinal, real r ideal, celebratry r critical, these bjects cmmunicate the scial and cultural values and histry, ecnmics, and the beliefs and plitics f their makers, wners, and users. The exhibitin invites visitrs t see similarities and appreciate the imprtant differences amng diverse representatins and attitudes twards hme, expanding their perspectives. The fllwing exhibitin themes encurage visitrs t make cnnectins with wrks f art and think critically abut hme: Façades & Threshlds: The façade and transitinal spaces f the hme drs, windws, and prches cmmunicate the layered histry f a dwelling as well as the identity and values f its makers and ccupants. Dmestic Interirs: Wrks f art made fr r featuring the dmestic setting reflect and shape the individual, familial, scial, and cultural identities and activities f their wners, makers, and users. Arrivals & Departures: Thrughut histry, travel and migratin cerced r vluntary have been critical t change, cmpelling individuals, families, and entire cmmunities t redefine their ntins and perceptins f and relatinships with hme. ABOUT THE COMMONS The Cmmns is an 864 sq. ft. space, which lies immediately adjacent t the Imagining Hme exhibitin. Designed fr prgrams and cnversatins, the Cmmns functins in tw ways:
First, it serves as a space fr frequent public prgrams and events, including but nt limited t thse develped by the artist/nn-prfit team. Examples include film screenings, cmmunity meetings, lectures, wrkshps, readings, and ther events. In the absence f a prgram, the space will cntain a reading area, casual seating, and educatinal materials fr visitrs. One f the fur walls will be reserved fr this purpse. The remaining three f the fur walls will be free and clear fr use by the artist/nn-prfit team. Tw cntain drways, which must remain pen during Museum hurs. The ceiling cntains a vide prjectr and the light thrw t the screen must be kept clear. The successful prject will allw the space t remain flexible, accmmdate and pssibly facilitate the varius uses fr the space, and wrk in dialgue with the Cmmns adjacency t the Imagining Hme exhibitin. REVIEW PROCESS An eight-persn jury will review applicatins and make a selectin. The jury will be made up f BMA Museum staff and Baltimre-area art and cmmunity leaders. Submissins will be reviewed by the jury and a shrtlist selected. Shrtlisted candidates will be asked t develp and present a cncept prpsal, including budget, and will be interviewed by panel members. One artist/nn-prfit team will be selected. The selected artist/nn-prfit team will be chsen n the basis f their RFQ submissin, cncept prpsal, interview, and references. A public annuncement f the selectin will be made n the BMA website, via scial media, and via press release.
