INTRODUCTION The Walton Gray Gambill Family Papers, 1880-[1900-1976]-1992, was a gift from Anita Coursey, Hermitage, Tennessee. The collection consists of 475 items, 281 of which are photographs. The collection is housed in eight manuscript boxes and is arranged in alphabetical order. There are no restrictions on this collection.

SCOPE AND CONTENT The Walton Gray Gambill Family Papers, 1880-[1900-1976]-1992, are arranged in alphabetical order and consist of 475 items. Two hundred eighty-one of these items are photographs of the Gambill family and their friends. Most of these photographs are unidentified and undated; however there are several photographs from the early 1960s to mid-1970s of Walton Gambill and his wife on vacations with their family and friends in Florida. The collection also includes two framed military certificates for Houston F. Gambill, dated 1940 and 1945. The collection also contains several letters. Some of these letters are to Ellen McNeal concerning family and friend news, as well as some greeting cards, and a birthday party invitation. Other correspondence includes letters to Florence Thomason regarding business matters, family, and friends. The last of the correspondence is from various people with a wide range of concerns. The collection also holds W. A. Gray, Sr. s day book which includes business matters such as crops, livestock, accounts, and a letter to G. G. Spellman (page 50). There are also several deeds to land in Lawrence County, Tennessee, as well as some warranty deeds, a deed to a cemetery lot in Mimosa Cemetery in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, and a deed of trust. In addition, the collection includes a number of ephemerae. There is a list of the cast of characters from the play, The Broadway Rhapsody, that was performed at the Ryman Auditorium on December 6, 1932; an invitation to the Oakland ASF Regional Hospital Detachment Dance on September 26, 1944; Ellen Glynn Green s graduation invitation, dated 1951; an invitation to John Mack Thomason s birthday party on January 4, 1953; a book of appreciation given to Ellen Glynn Green on Mother s Day, 1972; a limited warranty for the interment of Houston F. Gambill, 1987; W. G. Gambill s business card; a Rotary International paper badge; and a list of items that were donated to Scarritt College in Nashville, Tennessee. This collection also contains funeral programs for W. A. Gray, Sr. and Andrew J. Thomason, as well as some genealogical data from the1930 United States Federal Census, a list of names of the people laid to rest at Gallatin Cemetery (Gambill family members included), and a page from A History of Houston County by Iris Hopkins McClain that mentions J. O. Gambill s pharmacy. Furthermore, there are ten identification cards belonging to J. Porter Thomason, some of which are American Legion membership cards, dating from 1950 to 1960. Additionally, the collection includes various legal documents, some of which are death certificates; final settlement documents for Ellen McNeal and Florence Thomason; an affidavit in regards to William Orville Gambill s last will and testament; a United States Civil Service Commission record; and a letter of testamentary for Walton G. Gambill and Houston F. Gambill, dated 1966. There are also newspaper clippings containing obituaries and wedding announcements, dating from 1966 to 2003. The collection also holds military documents, such as an application for voluntary induction, dated 1943, and Special Order 93, which gives permission to five soldiers for a three-day leave of

absence. There are also four pamphlets: an Overton Hills Garden Club booklet, the Directory of Services of the French Lick-Sheraton Hotel, an Inventory of Personal Property pamphlet and a pamphlet entitled, Commemorating the Thirteenth Anniversary of the Silliman Evans Family as Publishers of the Nashville Tennessean and the Fifth Anniversary of Amon Carter Evans as its Publisher, dated 1967. The Walton Gray Gambill Family Papers also include William O. Gambill s personal papers, which contains insurance, loan, and tax papers, as well as his death certificate. In addition, there are four poems and one prayer, none of which is dated and two publications: Vaughn s Family Visitor, dated March 1959, and WD8N s Preview for March 1992. There are also eighteen receipts, including bank receipts, tax receipts, and funeral home receipts, dated 1889-1975. The collection also contains two songbooks, both of which include religious hymnals dated 1959. There are also seven telegrams. Five of the seven are congratulations telegrams to Mr. and Mrs. Green on their 25 th wedding anniversary, dated July 1, 1960. The collection also contains Ellen Thomason McNeal and John C. Bennett s will, as well as a codicil to Ellen McNeal s last will and testament. The collection also includes six scrapbooks. The first scrapbook belonged to Mary Glynn Thomason and it chronicles Thomason s senior year of high school (1928-1929). This scrapbook also includes photos of Mary Glynn as a child and the Lawrence County Girls Basketball Team of which Mary Glynn was captain, newspaper clippings, greeting cards, poems, basketball tickets, and dance invitations. The second scrapbook is blue with a colorful picture of a girl dressed in Chinese dress. The scrapbook is for the most part undated with the exception of a few dates on some newspaper clippings and a wedding invitation. This scrapbook contains mostly newspaper clippings of poems and stickers, as well as an invitation to a wedding, dated 1891. The third scrapbook belonged to Ella Dale Green, and the cover is entitled My Memory Book. The photo album consists of early 1940s photographs. The fourth scrapbook belonged to Bill Green and has a fraternity symbol on the cover. This scrapbook includes photographs, newspaper clippings, cards, various pamphlets, and names and addresses of fraternity brothers. The fifth scrapbook belonged to Susie Gray Gambill (Mrs. James O. Gambill). It contains articles about her son, Walton (Ted) Gray Gambill; a biographical sketch of Walton; letters and cards from Walton while he was in the service (he entered in 1942); Walton s military immunization registers; Western Union messages from Walton; Confederate money; newspaper articles about the awards Walton received for his military service; pictures of Walton in the military; postcards sent home from where he was stationed; and a newspaper announcement of Walton s marriage to Ella Dale Green in June 1950. The last scrapbook belonged to Mary Glynn Green. It includes Julian Hudman Greene s military discharge (November 9, 1945); Mary Glynn s graduation from St. Thomas Hospital School of Nursing (May 2, 1933); her nurses certificate license (1934); an old postcard of St. Thomas Hospital; a picture of Lawrence County High School ball players (1928); a picture of Lawrence County High School girls basketball team (1925-1926); a picture of Laurin Baker Askew at Vanderbilt University and as a child; and pictures of Uncle Willie, Mack, Porter, Ben and Ella Glynn, Mary Glynn, and Ella Drake.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Walton Gray Gambill, the son of James and Susie (Gray) Gambill, was born in 1909. Gambill attended Vanderbilt University and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He married Ella Dale Green and worked for First American National Bank. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and Shriners International. Gambill died at age 94, on August 19, 2003.
