RPS - Brief history 1853 Founded and named The Photographic Society 1894 Queen Victoria makes The Society Royal by Decree 1920 The Imaging Science Group (ISG) was formed (under t the original name of the Scientific and Technical Group ) 2003 The Society is 150 years old 2003 The Society Partners with the NMPFT at Bradford 2004 The Society is granted a Royal Charter

The Premises of the RPS In June 2004 The Society purchased new premises at Colleagues House in Bath Subsequently named Fenton House, After The Society s First Honorary Secretary

The Organisation of the RPS 15 special interest groups: Archaeology & Heritage, Audio Visual, Colour, Contemporary, Creative, Digital Imaging, Film & Video, Historical, Holography, Imaging Science, Medical, Nature, Travel, Visual Art, Visual Journalism 17 UK regions. 7 overseas Chapters - Australia, China (2), Japan, New Zealand, USA (2). Around 10,000 members from 80 countries (1/5 are overseas members)

Distinctions granted by the RPS The Licentiateship (LRPS) requires a sound basic technical skill and the ability to compose and control the image or medium as a means of communication. Evidence of a developing personal style is desirable. The Associateship (ARPS) requires a high standard of technical competence and evidence of creative ability. Complete technical control will have produced quality which is entirely fit for the intended purpose. There will be a consistency in the work which will also make a statement of a strong personal style. A high standard of presentation is expected. The Fellowship (FRPS) is awarded for excellence and evidence of distinguished ability.

The RPS Journal All members automatically receive a copy of The Royal Photographic Society Journal, published 10 times per year. The Journal carries news, reviews, indepth articles, a diary of exhibitions and events.

Imaging Science Group - ISG The Group's fields of interest cover all aspects of the science and technology of imaging - embracing both conventional photography and digital imaging covering image capture, storage, manipulation and analysis in all areas from basic photography to aerial and satellite technology and much more. Interests in three main directions: scientific publications, scientific meetings and educational activities.

Objectives 2006-2010 The Imaging Science Group (ISG) was formed in 1920. It had a 75th 'birthday party' at the Royal Society in March 1995) under the original name of the 'Scientific and Technical Group'

Publications: Imaging Abstracts Imaging Abstracts is a bi-monthly journal designed to provide information for the photographic and imaging industries. Available on subscription and also published electronically. Compiled and edited by the ISG of the RPS, and Published for The Society by PIRA.

The Imaging Science Journal Published quarterly and available to new subscribers on joining The Society s Imaging Science Group for a nominal cost. This specialist journal provides a forum for the latest developments in imaging science, in both its fundamental and applied aspects, through the publication of research papers by leading scientists and researchers. Published by Maney Publishing.

Conferences Digital Futures: yearly scientific conferences having a different topic every year related to Imaging Science. Good Picture: yearly symposia presented by scientists addressed to the general public interested in photography and imaging. Advances in Medical and Forensic Imaging: bi-yearly conference dedicated to medical and forensic imaging

Qualifications awarded in Imaging Science by the RPS Qualified Imaging Scientist : QIS (LRPS) Graduate Imaging Scientist: Accredited Imaging Scientist: Accredited Senior Imaging Scientist: GIS (ARPS) AIS (ARPS) ASIS (FRPS)

ISG Travel Grants Available to enable young image scientists to attend selected Society Regional and Group events that they would not normally be able to afford. More information on our website: http://www.rps-isg.org/

The RPS Collection A partnering agreement with the National Museum of Photography Film and Television passed the RPS Collection to the nation. This is now housed in the Insight Gallery and together with the museum collection it has become the largest collection of photography in the world
