4 HONG KONG & MACAU CPA CONGRESS: A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY CPA Australia plays a major role in motivating information and thought leadership in the global business arena. Our annual CPA Congress is recognised for featuring high-calibre business experts from varied industry backgrounds who would share their strategic and leadership foresights on global business trends, opportunities and innovativeness. Held on 1 November, over 400 delegates came to the CPA Congress in Hong Kong. The opening ceremony was officiated by Paul Tighe, Australian Consul- General for Hong Kong & Macau; Professor The Honourable KC Chan, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, HKSAR Government; and Po Chung, co-founder of DHL International. 2013 YEAR IN REVIEW 5 CPA AUSTRALIA CAREER EXPO Hong Kong s economic growth remained buoyant in 2013 and career opportunities stayed strong for the finance and accounting professionals. For nine successful years, CPA Australia s Career Expo remained as the largest accounting and finance recruitment event in Hong Kong. The expo attracted over 1000 students, fresh graduates and professionals to attend as it offered the perfect platform for them to meet directly with major employers for career consultations and opportunities. CPA Australia will continue to deliver ample support for our members career development in 2014. STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT CPA Australia is committed to providing premier career support for students to help them increase their competitiveness in the job market. Creative career events were organised throughout the year to cultivate students with strategic thinking and leadership skills. Aligning with the digital era, CPA Australia established an innovative online community The Naked CEO, which offered students with 24-hours of infinite career mentoring from our Chief Executive Alex Malley and other prominent business leaders. Another fresh initiative launched in 2013 was the Naked CEO Boardroom Competition. The competition was hosted globally and six students with the best career question for Alex were selected to meet him in person in Melbourne. Continuing our commitment in supporting students career development, numerous career enrichment workshops were hosted to enhance students communication skills, CV writing techniques and presentation competence. A number of Meet-the-Masters Career Forums were held this year to give students the opportunities to meet with distinguished professionals from different industries who provided them with constructive guidance on career planning. CPA Australia also hosted the Mentor Access Program (c-map) for students to gain comprehensive career information from leading professionals in the finance and accounting industry. 6 HONG KONG & MACAU CPA AUSTRALIA HOSTED THE WORLD S LARGEST BUSINESS SPEED NETWORKING EVENT Achieving a world record is an incredible triumph! On 18 September 2013, CPA Australia assembled over 400 mentors and mentees together in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and made an official attempt at breaking the Guinness World Records in the category of the world s largest business speed networking event - single venue. A remarkable evening for all the mentors and mentees who participated as they exchanged contacts and insights on accounting knowledge and experiences throughout the evening while taking part in making history. An astounding evening marked complete with the presentation of the Guinness World Records Certificate by the official Guinness World Records Adjudicator who announced that CPA Australia has successfully become the new Guinness World Records holder for the largest business speed networking event. 2013 YEAR IN REVIEW 7 STRATEGIC ALLIANCES WITH OTHER PROFESSIONAL BODIES With the goal of further expanding the career prospects of CPA Australia members in the accountancy profession in China, CPA Australia and The Taxation Institute of Hong Kong (TIHK) signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in November. The MOU acknowledges those who have completed either the Hong Kong or the PRC Tax paper of the Certified Tax Adviser Qualifying Examination conducted by TIHK (CTA) to receive exemption in the Advanced Taxation segment of the CPA Program. The agreement marked a significant milestone for CPA Australia and The TIHK, the collaboration has broadened the opportunities of CPA Australia members in Hong Kong and China. NEW PARTNERS IN RECOGNISED EMPLOYER PROGRAM CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR OUR MEMBERS CPA Australia s Recognised Employer Program was introduced in 2011 to acknowledge employers who demonstrate a commitment in supporting their staff s professional development. The program continued to grow from strength to strength since its implementation. In 2013, there is an accumulation of over 300 distinguished employers participating in the program globally. Being one of the world s leading professional accounting bodies, CPA Australia places great emphasis on delivering top-quality education and training to enhance our members professional development. In 2013, over 150 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) seminars and workshops were organised in Hong Kong and Macau, providing members with over 500 hours of technical, business, personal effectiveness and leadership skills training and knowledge. 8 HONG KONG & MACAU EXCHANGE AND STUDY TOURS TO YUNNAN AND QIANHAI Supported by the Liaison Office of the Central People s Government in HKSAR, CPA Australia organised two commendable tours to China this year. The tours offered an exclusive opportunity for our members to meet with the top accounting and finance officials in China. Keeping up with the developments in China, CPA Australia organised a tour to Qianhai in April. Our members met with the prominent representatives from the Shenzhen Stock Exchange and also the Authority of the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Services Industry Cooperation Zone. Our members received ample information on Qianhai s capital market framework, infrastructure, financial and tax policies and new business opportunities. A tour to Yunnan was also conducted in May, CPA Australia members met with the distinguished representatives from the Department of Finance of the Yunnan Province and the Yunnan Institute of Certified Public Accountants. 2013 YEAR IN REVIEW 9 SPOTLIGHT EVENTS AND NETWORKING ACTIVITIES Caring for our members on the social level, CPA Australia has been regularly organising networking events such as health seminars, wine tasting workshops, cocktail receptions, baking parties and sporting activities for our members. These events encouraged our members to maintain a balanced lifestyle and could also help them expand their friendship groups and business networks. Keeping our members motivated is an important goal for CPA Australia. In June, we invited the charismatic Starry Lee - an accountant by profession and a Legislative Councillor and Executive Councillor of HKSAR by passion, Starry shared her inspirational story on how she integrated her accounting career with her community works. INFLUENCE AND THOUGHT LEADERSHIP ON GOVERNMENT POLICIES Making a positive influence to the society, CPA Australia continues to harness the expertise of our members to contribute thought leadership on important issues relating to government policies and the business community on behalf of the accounting profession. This year, commentary panels for the policy and budget address were held along with three surveys on the upcoming economic outlooks, small business trends and the human capital movements. The results were addressed to the government, business community and media. Submissions were also made to the government on the review of the Conceptual Framework of Financial Reporting and possible improvements on the Corporate Insolvency Law in Hong Kong. 2013 YEAR IN REVIEW 11 CARING FOR THE COMMUNITY AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE TO THE SOCIETY CPA Australia has been awarded as a Caring Company for the past ten years; our mission is to make a positive contribution for the underprivileged children in Hong Kong and also teach our members about the importance of corporate social responsibility. Since 2012, CPA Australia s Young Achievers Committee has been organising a Christmas Carnival for the underprivileged children with the goal of raising funds and bringing love to them. Over 500 children attended the Christmas Carnival this year to enjoy the fun and games organised by our members. CPA Australia s contribution to the community has not gone unnoticed. In 2013, CPA Australia was elected as one of the top finalists for the prestigious CSR award - The Outstanding Partnership Award.
