Turning your hopes into reality Show up, Shine & Succeed
Did you meet
What will we learn today? The three little-known steps that will turn your best possible future self hopes into your reality. How your beliefs shape your success. Your personal busy-proof map to move you from where you are right to where you want to be.
What are you hoping for? When it comes to hope:" 89% of people believe the future will be better than the present.! Only 50% believe they can make it so.! How we see the future determines how we behave today.! (Lopez, 2013, p 18 )"
What do hopeful people do differently? Hopeful people realize:" The way from the present to the future is rarely a straight line and almost never one single line. " Multiple strategies toward your goals, helps keep you realistic so you plan for difficulties, set backs and disappointments and ensures your resilience because if one path is closed, you know another can be cleared. " (Lopez, 2013)"
Hope is created moment by moment through our deliberate choices. It happens when we use our thoughts and feelings to temper our aversion to loss and actively pursue what is possible. When we choose hope, we define what matters to us most.!! Shane Lopez!
How can you leverage hope? Hope is our ability to: " Clearly conceptualize want-to goals (goals thinking)" Develop specific strategies to reach those goals (pathways thinking way power)! Initiate and sustain the motivation for using those strategies (agency thinking will power). " (Lopez, 2013, p 129-174 )"
Why bother with hope? When it comes to work research suggests: " Hope is worth a 14% bump in productivity. Hope is worth about an hour a day." Hopeful workers are happier and healthier.! 2/3 of hopeful employees are engaged and enthusiastic about their work." (Reichard, Avey, Lopez. & Dollwet, 2013 )"
When it comes to success, more important than believing in your abilities, is the belief you can improve your abilities. " " Professor Carol Dweck!
Does your mindset hold you back? Fixed Mindset Outcome Focused Fear Based Growth Mindset Experience Focused Confidence Based I m not really good enough" Criticism is painful" Failure is fatal" To succeed I need to be in control " I m happy to be learning" Criticism is part of improvement" Failure is part of growth" To succeed I need to be willing to show up" (Dweck, 2008, p 245)"
I didn t fail. I just found ten thousand ways it didn t work.!! Thomas Edison!
Can you set growth mindset goals? Thoughts! Thoughts! Is Why? that! What true?! next?! Actions! Actions! Feelings! Feelings! (Ben Shahar, 2009)"
What are your want to goals? Your goals should: " Free you in the here and now to enjoy the journey, not just the result." Be specific about the experience you want to have and the growth, connection and contribution you re seeking.! Stated positively so it adds rather than subtracts from your life.!
What are you fighting for? I was once asked why I don't participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a propeace rally, I'll be there. "! Mother Theresa!
What s your want-to goal? If there was one goal you were most excited about when you look at what you captured in your strengths-fuelled best possible self journaling, what would it be? " For example: I want to blend science, play and kindness to teach women how to be more positive, authentic leaders by creating an online program they love that delivers positive differences and connects them to a supportive community. "
What are the pathways forward? What steps (way power) will you take to make your goal a reality: " Shrink the goal into smaller, more manageable, concrete steps where, when + how.! Use your strengths to build your confidence.! Identify the areas where your efforts will have the most impact and let go of the rest." Make sure you set a plan A, B and C to manage obstacles." (Luybomirksy, 2008, p 222-225)"
What pathways can you take? If there were at least three pathways you could pursue to reach you goal that would draw on your strengths in that state of flow and unleash your golden mean what would they be? " For example, to achieve the goal I set earlier: " a) Use my strengths of Curiosity and Strategy to continue playing each Monday with best practices to teach online and deliver lasting positive differences. " b) Use my Activate and Creativity strengths to deliver an online program people will love by July. " c) Use my Influence and Gratitude strengths for 11 minutes each day to nurture the community I m building through social media. "
How will you follow through? What can you do (will power) to see your goals through: " Identify possible obstacles to prepare you for the challenges you may face." Enlist your friends to encourage you, support you and hold your accountable to your goal." Honestly monitor and celebrate your progress." (Lyubomirksy, 2008, p 270-277)"
What pathways can you take? What can you do to ensure you maintain your motivation and willpower to follow your plans through and reach your strengths-fuelled future? What obstacles might you face? Who will support you? How will you measure your progress? " For example: " Possible Obstacles affording training to learn new strategies, using my time effectively and overcoming my introverted nature. " Supporters - buddy up with my friend and be transparent with my great team." Accountability - weekly work in progress meeting to hold us accountable, track our progress and celebrate successes. And savor people s expressions of gratitude."
What does your hope map look like? Who will support me?" Can I make it fun?" Pathways! Obstacles! Goal! 1. " 1. " " " " " 2. " 2. " 3 " 3. " How will I measure progress?" How will I celebrate?"
For example Set aside monthly training budget" Buddy up to share the journey" Pathways! Obstacles! Goal! 1. Use my strengths of Curiosity + Strategy to continue playing each Monday with best practices to teach online + deliver lasting positive differences." 2. Use my Activate + Creativity strengths to deliver a program people will love by July." 3. Use my Influence + Gratitude strengths for 11 minutes each day to nurture the community I m building through social media." 1. Affording the training opportunities" 2. Using my time and the time of my team to effectively deliver." 3. Being too introverted to reach out to people + share my warmth." " " " " " Blending science, play and kindness to teach women how to be positive, authentic leaders by creating an online program they love, delivers positive differences + connects them to a supportive community." Set weekly milestones and celebrate" Keep people s gratitude notes"
What have we learnt? While 89% of us believe tomorrow will be better than today, only 50% percent of us believe we can make it so. " The work of our head and our heart, hope is a three-part process that comprises want-to goals, multiple pathways that create the way power to move us forward and the agency to make things happen so we have the willpower to reach our goals." When it comes to setting our goals more important than believing in our abilities is having the growth mindset to believe we can improve our abilities.! Plan-B thinking helps us identify multiple pathways to reach our goals." Planning for obstacles up front, ensuring we have people to support us and creating ways to measure and celebrate our progress give us the willpower to reach our goals."
