BRITISH AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY PRE-PRODUCTION POSTAGE AND REVENUE STAMP MATERIALS This collection contains important pre-production postage stamp and related materials for Canada, from both the reigns of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth. In addition to the above, there is a substantial representation of issued and unissued material for the 19th and 20th century Revenue and Excise stamps, from Canada (including some Newfoundland material), as well as a smaller representation of revenue issues for the Provinces of Ontario and Quebec. In terms of the pre- production postage stamp materials for the Victorian and Elizabethan periods, the collection includes artist s models, photographs of models, essays, die essays, die proofs, composite proofs and plate proofs, for the following issues: the 1868-1876 Large Queen issue; the 1870-1893 Small Queen issue, including the 1893 Widow Queen issue; the 1875 Registration issue; the 1879-1913 Officially Sealed issues, as well as 19th century pre-production materials for official postcard issues. The 20th century issues include unissued design material for a 1952-4 Queen Elizabeth stamp, as well as pre-production materials for the following more recent commemorative and/or definitive issues: the 1961 Resources For Tomorrow issue; the 1972-1982 Definitive issues; the 1980 John Diefenbaker issue; the 1982-1987 Definitive issue; the 1986 Expo 86" issue; the 1987 Capex 87" issue and finally the 1989-1990 High Value Definitive issues. The revenue Stamp component of the collection includes die proofs, proof sheets, issued panes and single stamps, for the following 19th and 20th century Federal and Provincial categories: Bill Stamps; Customs Duty; Gas Inspection; Inland Revenue; Licence Registration; Light Inspection; Liquor Tax; Luxury Tax; Ontario Law; Probate Tax; Quebec Law; Telegraph; Tobacco tax; Transfer Tax; War Tax and Weights and Measures. The British American Bank Note Company is the oldest surviving Canadian based security printing company which formerly supplied postage and revenue stamps to the Canadian Government. Established in 1866, it first produced postage stamps for the Canada Post Office Department, in 1868, beginning with the issue of the Large Queen stamps. The acquisition of these very important philatelic records is significant to the National Archives, in that they will provide researchers with accurate information on the history and development of these Postage and Revenue issues, from the initial conceptual stage through to the finished issued product.

Bilingual) -Approved single postcard plate proof, with the initials MB, in blue ink, to the right and below the heading inscription and with the manuscript notation Ottawa July/1929", in black ink, directly underneath. (Note that, in this postcard, the heading inscription has been encircled, in pencil, and that within the circle there is a line drawn vertically, which appears to separate the recto of the card into two sections, one presumably to contain an address, the other presumably to contain a message or notice. The reason for the suggested design alteration to the recto of this particular postcard denomination is not apparent; but the alteration may have

something to do with a subsequent design of a Private Order Post Card, in which the verso of the card would be used for some other purpose, [i.e. illustration, advertising etc?]). - Unlisted in Webb s Essays and Proofs. - [Note: Damaged. The postcard has three puncture holes caused by the application of brass file holders; one near the upper left corner of the card, the second in the lower left side of the postage indicium and the third near the lower right corner. There is also a very heavy diagonal crease running, from the top right edge of the card through the postage indicium, to the lower right side. In addition, there are lighter creases in the upper right and lower left sides, in the upper left corner and one running vertically through the centre of the card from the top to the bottom edges, which is more noticeable from the verso. The card, as well, has a somewhat shop worn appearance overall.] 11.) P31a ---- 1 orange & 1 orange, types 6 & 13 - (Two lines. English & Three lines English) - Approved single reply postcard plate proof, initialled MB on the verso of the message half of the card, and bearing the typewritten notations 2 Reply Cards. / 1 Stamp on each side of card., directly underneath the heading inscription, on the recto. The postcard also bears a single unused example of the 1 orange yellow, Die I, dry printing, King George V Admiral coil stamp, mounted also on the message half, directly underneath the postage indicium, probably for colour matching and/or comparision (ref.: U.S.C. # 126iv - Perf. 8 Vertical). - Unlisted in Webb s Essays and Proofs. - [Note: Damaged. On the message half, the postcard has some light vertical creases on/near the left, right and top edges, as well as a diagonal crease in the lower left corner. In the reply half, the card has some light vertical creases both on the top and bottom edges, as well as a paper clip rust mark and the remains of glue, also near the bottom edge. The card, as well, has been horizontally folded in half at the point of separation and has an overall shop worn appearance.] [1 denomination / Panes and/or sheets] 12.) P29 ---- 1 orange, type 1, die II (Face of card completly blank except for stamp [i.e. indicium].) - Press proof sheet, 16 on, with no annotation. - Unlisted in Webb s Essays and Proofs. - [Note: Damaged. The sheet has some minor creases and/or bends around or near the outside edges and, most noticeably, at the top edge. There are also two small punch holes at the centre, near the top and bottom edges, at position numbers 5 and 8, as well as some minor pencil marks, oil and dirt stains and ink marks, in the two rows, on the right side of the sheet. In addition, the sheet was vertically folded in half at the centre point of separation, to the right of the punch holes - presumably for filing purposes - and has a somewhat shop worn appearance overall.]

13.) P29 ---- 1 orange, type 1, die II - (Face of card completly blank except for stamp [i.e. indicium].) - Press proof sheet, 16 on, containing several pencil position markings (for separation?) and annotated with the numbers 65 and 66, on position numbers 2 and 16. Also annotated, in ink, on the verso with the word Ottawa, in three separate locations. (The presence of the word Ottawa, on the back of this sheet seems to suggest that the printing plate for this particular denomination was made at some other location and then shipped to Ottawa, presumably along with an impression or pull from the plate. It is known that the American Bank Note Company., Ottawa, had the contract to print the Admiral postcards and that they held this contract until 1930. Could this possibly be a sample press proof sheet pulled from a plate manufactured, by the ABN Co., in New York, for the 1 denomination; which the BABN Co., in Ottawa then printed under a sub-contract?) - Unlisted in Webb s Essays and Proofs. - [Note: Damaged. The sheet has three puncture holes caused by the application of brass file holders, two near the upper left corner, in position numbers 1 and 2, the third at the lower right edge, in position number 16. There are also two heavy diagonal creases in the upper left and upper right corners (in position numbers 1 and 13), as well as some minor creases in various other locations, especially along the bottom edge. In addition, the sheet has had three very heavy folds applied both in the centre, at or near the point of separation, and on the left and right sides. (On the left side, the fold runs through all four indicia [i.e. position numbers 1-4], and, on the right side, the fold runs between position numbers 9-12 and 13-16, clear of the indicia.) The three folds have, over time, worn the card stock almost to the point of separation. The sheet, as well, has a small water stain on the verso and has an overall shop worn appearance.] 14.) P29a ---- 1 orange, type 1, die III - (Face of card completly blank except for stamp [i.e. indicium].) - Plate proof pane of 8 postcards (separated from a larger press proof sheet?) and annotated with the numbers 55" and 59", on position numbers 4 & 5. - Unlisted in Webb s Essays and Proofs. - [ Note: Damaged. The pane has three puncture holes caused by the application of brass file holders, two in the upper right corner, at position number 5 (one of which has punctured the lower left area of the postage indicium) and one near the lower left corner, in position number 4. In addition, there are light to heavy creases in all four corners of the pane, as well as at the top centre. There is also a 3/4" horizontal abrasion running into the postage indicium at position number 8, and ink marks and/or dirt stains on both the recto and verso. The pane, as well, has been horizontally and vertically folded at the points of separation and has an overall shop worn appearance.]
